Sorry, but I never noticed this before. Might be the only time they've done this, but there's no mistake. They've over dubbed the audio! In Part 2 of the pilot, they've put in footsteps and other background noises that weren't on the DVDs. The sound quality seemed a tad off, and it took me almost 1/2 way through the ep to figure it out. But there's no mistake. When Simon is rushing to the infirmary after Mal's told him that Kaylee's dead, the SciFi version has footsteps of Simon as he's running. Even though it's in slow motion....WTF ? I double checked that w/ the DVD, and on there, no footsteps. Same applied through out the rest of the show....

Anyone else catch this ? What's the deal ?

I'll be honest AURaptor, I didn't notice until you pointed it out. I don't have my original Fox tapes with me, but I have video files grabbed from the Fox broadcasts on my computer. I checked the section you mention, and no footsteps. I pulled out my DVDs and checked, no footsteps. I pulled out the tape I made of the first SciFi broadcast this past summer and checked, and sure enough, there are footsteps as he runs to the infirmary. Book has footsteps too, as he saunters in. I didn't notice it in the first SciFi broadcast, or in this one, but there they are! Excellent catch!

Now, the question is why???????

Edited to add: This is really starting to bug me! Am I going to have to watch the SciFi broadcasts and the DVDs side-by-side to see what else they have changed?

Yes, the question remains. Why?

I noticed early on in the show that the sound seemed....off. Couldn't put my finger on it, but the character's lines seemed muffled. Then I noticed that other sounds, footsteps, a rustling of shirts, jackets, the clink of a gun, etc... seemed overly loud. Were it not for the slo-mo scene of Simon running to check on Kaylee, I might have not checked my DVDs. But sure enough, through out the rest of the show, lots of secondary/ background sounds were way too loud. Stuff that didn't even show up on the DVDs.

Weird

Is that the version of the pilot that's chopped into two separate episodes and airs in fullscreen rather than widescreen?

There's a widescreen version? It's the pilot,(Serenity) part 1 played last Fri, and part 2 played tonight. Fullscreen. Yep.

Yep, I was watchin' it earlier and noticed the same thing... also noticed it's full screen. Was it full screen the first time it aired on SciFi? I can't remember and my copies are at the office ( where I play them all day long!! and everyone has to watch!!). Hmm, can't remember.

I don't remember the first part last week being so loud and strange or full screen....

What's up I wonder?

Uh, I must be missing something here.
If you have the DVDs, why would you want to watch it on TV, all broken up by commercials?
Are you a Nielson household?

Because it's fun. It's like a time-warp thing
and we are back in the past when Firefly first aired on Fox.

I bet SciFi is playing the original Fox Broadcast version. It was in Fullscreen. The Firefly DVD is widescreen. And I bet Joss cleaned it up and got rid of stuff that Fox made him add like footsteps.

I thought of this new way to watch the commercials on Firefly.

This week's (11/18/2005) Firefly sponsor was JVC Everio World's First Hard Drive Camcorder.

You see this guy (lets call him Mal) and he is trying to take video of his companion and he has to change the disc to get the video camera to work and while he is doing that another guy runs off with his companion. He should have bought an Everio, the World's First Hard Drive Camcorder.

Next commercial Mazola Pure Cooking Spray-No Alcohol No Silicone:

Alcohol and Silicone in cooking spray! How weird is that??

It seemed so funny when I thought of it.

Does anyone know if Firefly was ever sponsored when it was on Fox?

XEROGRAVITY

Kinda creepy. Let's hope they don't fiddle with it anymore. FF is perfect just the way it is.

Bad things like this always start out well-intentioned. Next, there will be addition of CGI special effects, followed by tweaking of the plot.

Bah.

XG

No such thing as gravity. The "Earth-that-was" just sucks.

What are the chances that: when Fox sold them the rights, they said "OK, you can show it but only the version that we're providing you with - not the nice version on the DVDs." It is unlikely that sci-fi would have checked for small differences like that, so they may not have realised.

Sorry Fox if I'm wrong but I don't trust you since the soundtrack download con (no mention that it didn't include 8 of the tracks).

Just reliving an old (ok, not that old ) Friday night ritual. And no, not a Nielson household. But 'they' know what I'm watching anyways, so it can only help.
