Noticed something funny while watching WAR STORIES tonight on SciFi. A hide-the-kids, mature content disclaimer following a commercial break. The warning preceded a brief scene depicting an encounter between Inara and a female client. Later in the episode: torture, gunfights, Mal GETTING HIS EAR CUT OFF, etc. No such disclaimer. I suppose this shouldn't come as a surprise. I remember backlash on the fox.com Firefly message board back when this episode originally aired.

Aside: Hopefully there were new tuners in this evening. the trio of OUT OF GAS, ARIEL, and WAR STORIES is about as good as it gets.

uhmmm.. I cannot say for certain.. but I suspect the disclaimer was for the whole episode.. not just the first bit.. It was fun to watch with the intros.. but I prefer my dvds with no commericials...

Sadly they probably have to do this just in case. In Canada the Space channel just runs disclaimers after every commercial if there is anything objectionable in the episode (which means pretty much every show has one).

Of course sometimes they run the wrong one...

"The products endorsed are not affiliated with this station. The Space Channel is not responsible for the claim made regarding any product or service shown"

Hugely paraphrased, but your basic infomercial disclaimer.

Too bad it aired at the beginning of Battlestar Galactica .

Anyone else notice during "Ariel" they censored Jayne's line "Smells like crotch!", leaving out the crotch? Too risque for cable?

MAL "You only gotta scare him."
JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

Wonder what they're going to do tonight with "Trash"? That's a nice long shot of a nakid Mal at the beginning and a little bit more at the end (pun intended).

Yeah, I supported the re-broadcast by watching them on TV, until they censored "crotch." I don't do censorship, they lost me right then; back to my DVDs.

Noticed they "fuzzied" out Mal's but?! I seem to remember when Fox aired it, they actually didn't - although I could be misremembering as it's been soooo long and I've seen the DVDs so many times.

You know - tv and movie ratings have long confused me. Violence is ok - but - naked buts ain't? Funny how the human body is more objectionable when it's intact but not covered then when it's got some ripped clothes over a lot of gore and the body's insides are falling out all over the place. Huh?...we live in a mighty strange world.

It seems that naked female butts are okay on tv (remembering that Helen of Troy thing on USA (?) a few years ago) but cute naked Mal(e) butts? Trash was one of the unaired episodes, so we have no idea what Fox would have done to it. I love my dvds

No power in the 'verse can stop me!

I started laughing when I saw that, but that's when I'm happy that I have the DVDs.
I understand the disclaimer, but you have shows on MTV where they air that kind of disclaimer during every commercial break. I guess Sci-Fi decided that not many young ones watch their station and I guess they can't get in trouble if they did show the disclaimer just once.

Call me crazy, but I though Fox didn't air Trash. It was one of those that premeired on the DVD first.

You are right as was Ryce - my bad. A moment of temporary insanity - all the cleaning chemicals in the air getting ready for the family to arrive for the holiday made me think that Fox had aired Trash - but no - they did not.

I'm feeling much better now...and it was still hilarious to see the "fuzzied but"! So glad I have my shiny DVDs.

FYI - I have made 2 new converts over the weekend!! We have watched 6 of the episodes in the last two days and they want more!!! Sorry - didn't mean to hijack the thread, but it's always thrilling to get people addicted to it.

Standards have changed since Firefly first aired. The Janet Jackson incident was the trigger, but it's something the Christian Right has long been pushing for.

I dare say that several scenes that Fox originally aired would not make it past the broadcast-network censors today, possibly including the Inara sponge bath sequence.

FWIW, I agree with those who've been pointing out the hypocrisy of allowing graphic violence (and implied violence) while stamping out any reference to sexuality. In Mal's immortal words... "Huh."

They censored "smells like crotch". Simpsons is worse for cursing, they actually say things like, example "B*stards".

I would put crotch on the same level as crap, its like saying 'we are going to censor the word penis'

Q: Why don't we just raise the defensive shields?
A: A superb suggestion with just two major drawbacks. One, we don't have any defensive shields. And two, we don't have any defensive shields. Technically speaking thats only one flaw, but it was such a big one I thought I mention it twice.

Actually, the Sci-Fi Channel did censor the word "putz" in a Sliders episode, simply because it's Yiddish for "penis."

The channel's attitude toward sex is, in the popular sense of the term, schizophrenic. When they bought Lexx, they promoted it with a sexed-up ad campaign and aired all the raunchiest (which were also the weakest) episodes first, destroying anyone's ability to follow the story arc and earning it a reputation as incomprehensible grade-Z would-be porn. And yet at the same time, they heavily censored it, chopping out scenes and dialogue and blurring out even the hint of a nipple under fabric.

It's a wonder they didn't start bleeping out "frell" on Farscape.

The disclaimer specifically referred to the upcoming segment of the episode. I wondered if HEART OF GOLD would carry a similar warning prior to a scene in which an implied rape occurs (no warning). The disclaimer was there for the depiction of a woman-on-woman encounter. Fox provided no warning when the episode first aired, and received a lot of flack for it, even from fans on the Fox.com FF message board.
