I absolutely love the musical style of the ballad of Serenity, employing the violin and guitar combination. Does anyone know if this is considered similar to any particular style? I'd really like to find more music in a similar vein.

Western. It is of the western genre. Many people inaccurately lump western in with country to make the C&W combo. They are NOT the same but are related.

To expand upon this question a bit, could anyone recommend specific songs or artists that are similar to the Firefly music? I'm gonna run an RPG and I'd love to put the music in the background. Thanks!

This thread is a million years old but I pulled together many of the suggestions from this forum into a Spotify playlist available (with lots of blathering commentary) here:

My selections are all instrumentals that could be found in the Firefly and Serenity universe...mostly instrumental acoustic folk with some bluegrass/Chinese hybrid songs and a couple appropriate tunes from film and video game soundtracks. Mostly stuff that could be on in the background while reading or maybe starting a role-playing game that all had the same mood and feel, and kept the signal going.

If more Western music is desired, my (and Garth Brooks) favorite artist is Chris LeDoux. Should be able to find about 40 albums from him. 2 of his backup Bands were The Saddle Boogie Band and The Western Underground. The early dozen albums had more raw, unvarnished sound, the latter albums got more glitzy. The middle range still had some quality raw sound, but he had settled into some awesome songwriting by then.
