... Yes, ladies and gentlemen, another "Hi, I'm so glad to be here" newbie post.

... I had never heard of Firefly until about 2 weeks ago (doesn't exist here yet). A pal of mine on a Babylon 5 site told me to look into it... we like a lot of the same stuff so I went ahead and got the series on DVD via EBay . . . Wow Great show (not done watching it all yet, but great so far).

... At first I was all like,
Quote:

A western in space?!
, get outta here! But it works, amazingly enough.

... It's a newbie post and you guys have no doubt seen hundreds, so let me add a comment that makes this (maybe) worth a once-over....

... Firefly is the FIRST sci-fi show I've seen, television or film, since BladeRunner, that has Chinese written all over stuff in a way that actually makes sense.

... BladeRunner set the precedent and oh so too many shows have been slapping Japanese and Chinese on pipes and road signs, doorways and trucks... all to give it that Futuristic Feel, as if the only concievable future to these writers/directors is a future wherein Asians have conquered, at least economically, the West. It rarely works... for me anyway. I get tired of seeing it - it's a cheap trick.

... Firefly's universe does it nicely. Very nicely indeed.

... Well, just one small point of praise for Firefly that I wished to throw in.

... Good day, All.

Welcome aboard Haole!! I'm a recent crewmember myself, and thus far I love this place. I think you'll feel right at home. I was one of those unfortunates that didn't know this show exsisted until after the movie came out (GOD I wish I knew before!!). But now that I have seen it, and I'm now watching the DVD series, I just can't seem to get enough.

Outta curiosity, where are you from where the show doesn't exist?

... I live in Japan. Japanese television is an entertainment wasteland , so I'm usually watching DVDs and videos. As I've been here nearly 9 years, my collection is impressive!

Konichiwa (I had to stop and think to avoid typing "Ni hao" by reflex ).

Mileage varies, I guess; I'd give my eye-teeth for the chance to see original-run animé (y'know, with the InuYasha movies timed to hit theatres at the point in time where they fit into the TV run).

Hiya. Another n00b here also. Completely missed this series and even the movie.

Of course I have watched the DVD set twice so far and will be picking up the DVD of the movie on the 20th without fail.

On another note; is there a site that would show upcoming conventions where some of the cast might be? I have not seen anything like that in Arizona as far as I know.

Welcome to the site and verse!!! Actually its Konnichiwa (for Cybersnake). Yup In my opinion this one stacks up pound for pound w/ B-5. The problem is not that they throw Asian culture in. Its actually that it doesn't make sense either the cultural aspeacts or how they use the language etc. I do agree that Firefly did a wonderful job of it. Having lived in Japan and familar w/ East Asian culture this was a wonderful treat as well as the characters, blending of diff genres (sp?) etc. Anyways enjoy the site and the show. Also check out the movie, Serenity. Continues the story and keeps up the pressure to continue in this wonderful world.

Aw shit Capt, don't tell me we're chargen the cannons again. One can only take so much grape shot!!!

Let me know when and if the Movie comes to Japan. I want to have my friends pick up some of the collectable stuff from the theater for me. Thanks. Yeah one of my ex-pat friends over there had a nice collection so when we didn't have money for $$$ sunaku or bar hopen, we would chille at his place watching movies.

Hi JerryT!

Have you joined the AZ Browncoats Yahoo group? (The link's in my sig.) I'll warn you, we post a lot of messages in there! But you can also check out the calendar in there to see what events we are planning. Currently, we're gonna shindig on the 20th for a DVD-viewing party!

The www.azbrowncoats.com messageboard is less active, but you can check out the "Arizona events" section in there, too. As far as I know, there haven't been any BDH appearances in AZ so far (except for when Nathan came to one of the preview screenings). But we fans hosted a table at Copper-Con earlier this year.

Later!

Drat- I'm jealous.... sorry guys, but I wish southwest Missouri had a Browncoat group, or that I at least had some fellow Browncoats close.

So far, myself, and the couple of folks that I've converted are the only ones I know about. We've had a couple of get togethers for viewing the show, but they are small affairs ( 2 or 3 folks).

Anyway, I'm just sayin'.

Sorry, really nothin' to do with the thread... just wishin'.

I'm on Honshu, the prefecture of Hyogo (Kansai region - biggest city is Kobe). I spent a year in Kyushu, in a city called Tosu (Saga Prefecture), many many years ago. Liked it a lot. Fukuoka was a fun city, too. Hakata ramen was great!
