DONCOAT

As I wrote in the Day 1 thread, this morning was devoted to photo sessions with the cast. The lobby of the Hilton was a bit of a zoo, with folks queueing up for their pics. Nathan made his entrance around ten and proceeded to do combo shots (Bad Boys of Firefly, with Adam) and individual. Syryn (I think I have that spelled right now) did an awesome shot with Nathan and Adam, a real cuddle sandwich.

By the way, it turns out Syryn doesn't post here on FFF.net, only on the Booster Events forum. Sorry if I confused anybody. I hope she'll put her pic up anyhow, or let me do it. I think I can bribe her -- there's a shot of her on my cam she wants

The afternoon started off with a Q&A with "the boys of Serenity" -- all five of them. I don't think I've laughed so hard in years. Nathan is a total ham, though Alan and Adam can pretty much keep up with him. Ron and Sean are much more laid back.

Nathan opened up by apologizing for his absence on Friday. He repeated Alan's explanation about the elective surgery: "Personal preference; I had two inches taken off, so it's down to 12." Later he fessed up. He didn't name the project but said it's an indie film.

There were a lot of good questions. The most serious, perhaps, came from a woman who asked the actors what high school was like for them, because her son was underperforming and could use some perspective. (The son was there too, by the way.) The actors all gave interesting tidbits from their school days, and ended up giving some sage advice. As Nathan put it, "High school is where you show the world that you can do the work that's expected of you. Everything else is just funny stories you can tell later." (Paraphrased, but that's the idea.)

The funny bits were, well, pretty much continuous. One questioner put the guys on the spot by asking them who their favorite female cast member was. They cheated a bit and each took one of the gals, except Sean who refused to choose.

Ron commented on his favorite scene in Serenity, the first dialog with Nathan in the firelight. Then he brought the house down with, "I thought my other scene f**kin' sucked!"

I'm sorry that I'm not remembering more of the funny stuff. Too much too fast!

Next came a charity auction. The prize of the day was the head of the Jayne statue from Jaynestown, along with the name plaque. I didn't attend, but later I learned it was won by a fellow I'd been hanging around with. Good on ya, Mike! Take good care of that thing -- though how you're gonna get it on the plane is a mystery to me. "Yes, sir, my carryon is a severed head..."

"The girls of Serenity" was next, sans Gina. Let me tell you, these ladies can hold their own with the guys when it comes to banter. Lots more laughs on all sorts of topics, such as favorite scenes from the movie, and a repeat of the high school question. Turns out Summer and Jewel were both mostly home schooled because they were both working hard -- Jewel as an actor, Summer as a dancer. But Summer said she always wanted to act, even as she was studying ballet twelve hours a day.

Then Summer told the painful story of the incident that ended her dancing career. I won't repeat it here, but I can say she had me wincing with the very thought of it.

Morena told a story about Nathan: after the cancellation, he solemly told her how much he'd appreciated working with her, and how outstanding her work was... "if you like dog shit!"

After that, the guys came back out and the whole cast did a commentary on "Out of Gas" as it played on screens in the corners of the room. The episode choice was a pretty broad consensus between the fans and cast. Nathan, Alan, and Adam did most of the commentary, with Morena and Jewel chiming in with some good lines. Perhaps ironically, some of the ep's real dialog got as much reaction as the running commentary.

After the ep, Morena sweetly told Nathan, "I just want to say how great it was working with you on Firefly, and how terrific your acting is... if you like dog shit!"

The banquet was the final event of the day, at least for me (I skipped an Angel Q&A and a kareoke dance). I sat at Morena's table, and we also had late addition Christina Hendricks (Yolanda/Saffron/Bridget). Both are very nice, down to earth people who were very gracious to us lowly fans. Morena went out out of her way to learn everybody's name and something about us. (I grabbed the seat right next to Morena... kinda surprised myself, I'm not usually so bold.)

After the meal, I chatted briefly with surprise guest Tim Minear, and told him how much I appreciated his work on Firefly. I also said, if Joss couldn't work full time on a sequel, I'd have no problem if Tim had the reins. He, too, was very gracious and friendly.

Now, I probably should say that there have been a few glitches organizationally. I won't go into details, but con veterans have told me that other cons they've been to have gone more smoothly. Nothing's perfect, I guess.

All in all, it's been a long and busy day. My poor throat is pretty battered from all the loud-volume yakking, but I'd have to say it's been worth it.

I'll work on a final report for posting tomorrow night or Monday morning. Ciao!

You are all most welcome! You should be sure to read the thread "Flanvention Day 2" by PAINISSCARY. He (or she!) remembered lots more details (I plead exhaustion) and there's not much overlap between our reports. That's totally coincidental, as I wrote mine up before I saw the other thread and didn't change anything.

And yes... Ron referred to it as his "other f**kin' scene!"

Hope I get through today... I'm running a slight fever. Tylenol, do your stuff!

P.S. I see my reports have made the news section... that's a first for me! Woohoo!

P.P.S. I have a ticket for the Sunday Lunch, just the stars and 20 of us fans with more money than sense. I have a toast in mind. Whether I get the chance to give it or not, I'll write it up here. I hope it'll express the feelings of all us fans toward our BDH.

I just have a few Queries that I need answered here, your commentary has left me wanting
I have to know.
I know that Indie 4 hasn't officially been announced, but did Nathan Actually say that?

Did Nathan Happen to mention if he had ever Killed Puppies or set Slugs on Fire in High School?
I know, not important to most, but thought it was something that should have been asked **grin**
It's the Nosey side of me.

This is were Micro recording devices come in handy, since anything said publicly should be able to be reprinted without fear of legal reprisals.

I think Homeland security would allow a severed head as long as it didn't have a nail file or toenail clippers in it :) Haha!

Wow! Now hear I have to Know! Ok I understand Gina didn't show up and I am sure there was a reason (Although I would have sorely missed her Hotness at the Con)...I would love to know what kinds of things Jewel did in HS, she is just the most adorable creature on this or any other planet ......

But mostly, I want to know more about Summer. I have known Dancers and I have heard them talk about their fears. This is diconcerting because I would truly love to understand what kept her away from Dancing. It must have been painful indeed and I think that this would be the "PERFECT" Place to go into it, to allow her fans to understand her pain. Again, if she said it publically, why not print it here? Sorry my Need is showing. If I have to beg I will.....C;mon be a Good Egg and Report what she said......
Clark Kent would do it...;) *snicker*

Dog Shit? **AH HA!** I knew he liked killing puppies! ... Seriously I hope it was a joke on his part ;)

BAM! ... Morena strikes back.....good.....I like healthy Banter
Ahhhh Bold is good....did she give off a bright aura? was she just great to be next to? did she at least smell good?

Shout out to Tim......"Usurp the throne!...I know a lot of people who have a 'Joss Must Die!' attitude..... We love his work, but don't think very highly about his choices in some matters, beginning back in the 1st season of Buffy....."

Details! Details! Details! ... I have been to many Cons I love talking about the screw ups and mistakes....Tell us! Tell Us!!
Did I mention the time at Creations Grand Slam, when I had Volunteered to help Security and spent 2 hours walking the Gargae at the Pasadena Convention Center with Bruce Boxleitner because he couldn't remember where he parked his car, only to find out that it was the black SUV right next to the door we exited in the 1st place?

Ok I know I may be asking a lot, but I do need to know some of these things......
Even if ya don't want to say it out in forum, send it to me in email and I'll read it through and perhaps I will do some mini commentaries about the omitted info....I have always wanted to be a Journalist....sort of.

Byrd! ....... D00d....
I bet you are also the kind of person that goes around to shopping malls on Christmas telling Kids "There is no such thing as Santa Claus"

Granted I amnot thrilled with the religious aspect or the commercialization of it, but The Spirit is still there, even though it was stolen you can't kill the spirit......

Until there is a resounding "NO" when asked about a sequel or a renewal of the series I prefer to think it will be back....

Look at the extra 9 seasons Sci/Fi pulled out of Stargate SG-1, which frankly should have been euthansized many moons ago.....

I think that the life of Firefly lies in the hands of the Wizards at Sci/Fi

Give your negativity a rest there ok......

Seriously, CHILL.

Folk are talking about a convention, reporting what was said, there are plenty other places round here to discuss whether or not there'll be a sequel!

Thanks once again Doncoat. We love to hear about the flanvention.

Oh. BTW, BYRD101 as far as I'm concerned you can go find a bridge to jump off. Not because you have an opinion but because you are annoying enough to repeat it so many times.

I can answer for myself, as I was in Alan's table - there were, per table, about 9-10 people plus the star. We had a great time, he was very animated, asked us questions, we asked him and we pretty much kept the conversation going. I even got a hug at the end of the evening... yes, good times.

Sounds like fun!

It sounds like it was a better time than the cocktail party, so if I decide to go to one of these events next year, if I have the money, it will be the banquet. That's part of what I am trying to decide by asking people how the banquet went. Thank you for letting me know.
