I post this in BEG's name as her mouse is giving her problems ;)

To bring yourself up to the current floor of the hidey place of nice-ish folks that's located in a plainly visible skyscraper (and how large it is!), read these:

Ground Floor: Hunt for the Secret Hidey Place of Nice Boys
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=14264

Second Floor: The Hidey Place of Nice Boys & Girls
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=15042

Third Floor: Hidey Place of Nice-ish Boys and Girls
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=15184

4th Floor - Shoes, Linens, Nice People Hidey Places
http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=15249

Towards the end of the last floor we were discussing past, present, and dream-type jobs. What are yours?

I know more or less where your coming from, but from a slightly different angle.
On my own course things went, erm, 'a little wrong' for similar reasons toward the end, screwed up big time.
I decided a life of game programming may not be so much for me, which is how I started to move toward more the animation/modeling side of things.

For being such a festive time, December sure can be teh SUCK! I've been so busy I can't see straight.

JObs...

Past jobs. The exciting field of dairy management at the local grocery store; retail mens' department attendant; concessionist, usher, box office cashier, and subsequent management of movie theater. (probably my best grunt-job.) Warehouse worker, followed by technician at same establishment. PC repair tech at a local fix-it shop.

Current job. Big bad IT in-charge guy. :)

Dream job. I like the 'do nothing' job; that's prettty nice. But if I could do something in computer animation or game programming, artistry, creation, etc. I'd be happy as anything. But I simply don't have time to learn the programming languages like I'd like to. Maybe when I win the lottery. /nod.

OK, I finally caught up on the fourth floor job discussion, and now I'll answer seriously (not that I wouldn't turn down any job related to FF!)

best past job: drove an ice cream truck for a summer. Harder work than it sounds, but how cool is a sales job where the customers (ranging from cute kids to sweaty construction workers, mmm-mmm!) come running to find you with smiles of joy ...

current job: geophysicist extraordinaire. Squiggle lines R us: earthquakes, oil exploration, crustal modeling, yadda yadda yadda

dream job: a spot in a modern dance company - Mark Morris, I wish, egad they're amazing!! I'd take Graham or Ailey or Limon or Bill T. Jones & Arnie Zane ...

You know what I've always thought would be an awesome job? I'd want to be in STOMP!

Get paid to bang on things and make music. Fun and more fun.

I once wanted to a be a professional musician. I went to college for flute. But that didn't pan out. If I could go back, I'd do percussion instead of flute. Xylophone, tympani. There's so much to do and it's all so neat.

I'm all in for Stomp. Not so much for tympani, they have to tune on the fly. (oh, the things I learned in high school band) Tone deaf don't work so well. I could play the triangle though.

5th floor! Thanks, LMD.

You might say I've got a dream job right now. Just started today (working through New Years) at my dad's company. Basically I sit at a computer at punch numbers into a database. It's wicked easy, and since I'm the boss's kid, nobody ever gives me crap for being lazy. Not that I am, of course.

...He says while playing on fff.net while on the clock!

(Just kidding Orpheus, I am guilty of the very self same thing. But it's not laziness in my case, it's always having to be doing more than one thing at a time. It's amazing how much MORE work I do when I'm here than when I'm not.)

You know, most people that say they're tone deaf really aren't. They just haven't developed their inner ear. I've taught several "tone deaf" people to sing on pitch in mere days.

Trumpet's fun. I'm just I didn't play it. All that bzzzzzzzing.

Course, those stupid pie movies gave us flute players a bad name. Not too happy about that.

More American Pie, another Cheaper by the Dozen, A Big Momma's House 2 (yes I saw a poster at the theatre) and people are questioning if we'll get a Serenity 2? Grrrr Arrrrg.

No probs. I've been intrigued by this whole Tree thing for awhile actually. I spoke with CMS and she told me the best way to introduce myself would be to bump into those on Boros.

Well, We've been playing with cloven fruit, for which there are many rules. And we've been playing CalvinBall, for which there are, well, none.
Hard and fast rules for Cloven Fruit:
Someone offers you a fruit with cloves in it:
Take the fruit, remove a clove with your hand for a on the hand.
Remove one with your mouth for a on the mouth. (remove it from your mouth first= light kiss, hold it in your mouth= "come and get it")
You now have a fruit. Offer it to someone.
Bite the fruit= "let's blow this thing and go home."
*side note: if the fruit only has one clove when offered = "come with me, I'll cook breakfast in the morning."

Well, basically.
CalvinBall: See the link provided by CMS.

THESOMNAMBULIST

This is an interesting question. I've been mulling over the future of things with my two best buds. It seems we're all in a little bit of a funk as regards our jobs at the mo' :(

In truth I pretty much think I have my dream job. I mean I've spent my childhood drawing nothing but cartoon characters. As it turned out I now do this professionally, and it has been fun, but I think, the constant meeting of deadlines, the fact that I tend to work for people who can't draw, and who invariably impose their notions upon you, well it all piles up after a while and lately the idea of quiting this has become and more more likely. :( It's a tad sad actually to think that but it is the way things are going.

That said as an alternative there are a few options that have frequently impressed themselves upon my tiny brain over the years:

Directing - I always loved films and for a while I had my heart set on aiming towards this, but a few years ago I was given the chance to direct a music video, and believe me if ever there was a thankless task, it's directing!

No-one listens to you and you spend half the day convincing the people you hired to work with you, that what they've done is good enough, but changes are inevitable and could you "pretty please with sugar on top" just alter things 'this way or that' for the sake of the shot. That and the fact that the 'artists' are sooooo prickly that it's more like hostage negotiations than directing.

....and at the end of it, nobody has ever said thanks for the lack of sleep, the hard work or acknowledged the fact that you and your cameraman, and AD are competing for sleeping space on the studio floor, while the 'star' is pampered in a five star hotel, and then still grumbles when you only give her FIVE hours for make-up and costume fittings.....before she has to lip sync to the music.

Hmm maybe not.

Otherwise lately I've been wondering about learning to fly. Dunno where that's coming from it's just kinda hit me recently. Anyone here fly ? Or has a plane or some such ? I'd love to know what jobs are around for 'Buzzboys' ? and the ups and downs of such a thing....

I never get that one right.

Georgians are so cute. Apparently Georgian moms tells their boys to clean their plates or they will end up with ugly wives. Of course, whats more important than looks is a woman's ability to make good hachapori - that would be the cheese dish that made me sick for 2 days

The problem is the Georgian cheese - contains things that American stomachs have very experienced and never should.

What were we talking about anyway. Jobs? A lot of people into animation here. I saw a talk by a guy from the company that animated the Matrix 2 and 3. ohmigod what a cool talk. just crazy fun stuff they did.

My dad was a pilot. He was a flight instructor, actually. Here's the long and short of it: if you like to eat, don't become a flight instructor.

If you have to wear any kind of corrective lenses (contacts, glasses, anything) you'll have a hell of a time trying to get any kind of well-paying job. Commercial airlines aren't keen on taking people with less than 20/20. That's what did my dad in. He absolutely loves to fly, but he could never get anything past instruction.

Yeah, I loved it. Oboe is awesome, too. I'm a musically gifted sort, I never had to practice. I remember getting second chair at an All Region function...the first chair bassoon player practiced two hours a day. I practicaly sight-read the tryout music, haha.

I miss playing

That's kind of what I'm like. But I went to college and was forced to study music theory and took lessons from this horrible woman (I made her cry once, highlight of my higher education.) and was made to practice 30 hrs a week mandatory and had rehearsals nearly every night of the week and got carpal tunnel and nearly failed out of school because I wasn't allowed to play and that whole experience sort of killed my desire to play anymore. I still do occasionally, and I'm still quite good, but nowhere near where I used to be.

Heh. Add to that the recent joy of re-entry into the wonders of working the night shift, and you can well imagine the new vampiric/gothic me. Tasty pulsing jugulars: that's where it's at, lol!

Yep, I can see that a trek through 100 degree temps with 99% humidity, along with clouds of tsetse flies and herds of voracious carniverous predators is more fascinating than a langorous vacation on a tropical beach. Sigh. Will I ever get it right? Hey, you two, be kind enough to send some postcards, eh?

I could make my chocolate cake. Always seems to a safe choice when it comes to potlucks.

Ah, now here is a conundrum, you have no idea what I look like.

Hm. Endangered animal menu. Interesting concept. Of course, the restaurant's own popularity would be it's undoing.

Taking some steps in the right direction, though. I signed up for cooking classes. Hopefully I will not accidently sever any digits or inadvertantly start my own pyrotechnics company.
