SAMEERTIA

We have a store dog. She was a rescue dog and was homeless for about a year before the humane society finally managed to catch her. She's been with my boss for about five years now.

She responds okay to "Mitzi", which my boss named her, and to 'puppy-puppy' but it's been clear that she doesn't really respond to them like it's her name.

This morning, she was hanging out in a sunny spot by the window and I said, "Hey, bao bei."

She jumped to her feet and ran to me, her whole body shaking with her tail-wags.

She's NEVER run to me when I'm not offering food before! Stunned, I asked, "Are you the little bao bei?"

Her whole body was trembling, she was so excited! She's sitting at my feet right now while I eat lunch and if I say 'bao bei' her tail wags so hard it looks like it might come off!

Palo Alto has a good sized Chinese population. So, I'm guess she was once someone's bao bei. Now she's ours. :)

That's very cool!

I wonder if it'll work on my sister... who's name is convieniently Miranda (I've started to say it like in the bar when River sees the Fruity Oaty Bar commercial). I've started to call her Mei Mei.

Well my dog freaks out like that whenever someone says "Uncle Buck" and no one has the slightest clue why because we've had her from birth. We assume it sounds like something else, but she never acts that way to anything else. The closest we could thing of was "go for a walk," but she hates walks and doesn't get excited about it. I'm trying to think if Bao bei sounds like anything, but nothing comes to mind. Maybe her master speaks Mandarin.

Congratulations to the little bao bei for finding a good home, and to you and your employer on being such caring people.

That is so cool....I try different names with our foster dogs, trying to see what they respond to, sometimes you do find a good match!

I've been using "bi zui" (shut up) with the dogs when they bark, and they're responding pretty good to it! In fact, when I first used it, Sadie actually stopped, and ran to me and sat at my feet! That NEVER happens! She's gotten used to me saying it a bit more, so I have to work on making sure I'm consistent on the pronounciation, and I also give it a lower voice tone -- between the two, it works well!

"We gotta go to that crappy town where I'M a hero..."
