I think it's something awful like Dorcus or Gertrude or Prudence. (no offense to anyone with those particular names.)

My theory is that she's an orphan and was never given a real name. Like she was raised in some horrible Oliver Twist-esque orphanage and was only referred as "that red-headed one". Thus making her into the YoSafBridg we all know and despise.

No, I think she picks a different alias for each job. If she gave away her real name to anyone, it would help to track her down.

Well, the refrences to "acadamy training" the Inara made after facing her say that either she was at the acadamy at one time and left or was tutored by another companion at some point. It's possible there are records of her somewhere but probably really hard to get.

my theory was that she had lied about her name so often, that when mal asked her, she couldn't remember it. like, just for that moment, she realized that she couldn't readily recall the name someone who had loved her had given her. that was what i read in her face, right before mal smacked her.
not like she had totally forgotten her name or anything, but when put on the spot, she realized that that part of her was gone.

Now now, even Gollum recalled his own name, Smeagol, when Frodo spoke it to him. Gollum was 500+ years old, and spent much of that time living in ....well, it doesn't matter. The point is that YoSaffBridge has a real name, and I bet she's just afraid of using it. Afraid that she'll remember who she use to be, along with images of family and another life that is long since gone--forever.

I'm thinking Beattrice, myself.

Raise your hand if you want a spin off starring Yo-Saff-Brige.

*raises hand*

I agree that it's something horrible. She was embarrassed by Yolanda. She's probably even more embarrassed of her real name.

Yo-Saff-Brige on her very own caper-of-the-week show? Sounds ace!

Which reminds me... I really must come up with a good plot for a fanfic I have in mind for her... I think this thread might be helping.

No way! I have a fanfic idea for Yosaffbrige!!!

I think her name is probably something revealing of her character, or something so unlike her that being named that shames her.

I don't know. I tend to think that while she did change her alias all the time, she must miss a regular life (Haymer... I think that's his name).

Just butting in for a second, asking anyone with advice on pinball machines to chack out this thread: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=15599

No idea what her real name is. You know, she might not even remember. There's not even a real way to gauge how old she is, with all that future beautification technology. Image the future of botox, ew.

I reckon her name is a really common name. But she hates it because it's a common male name.

Like Dave or Steve or something...

Her parents named her for a long forgotten diva from Earth-that-was, an often married woman mysteriously called J-Lo. That's why she got all crazy in the first place, her parents constantly listened to "Jenny from the Block" and knew every line from "Gigli."

I like "shiong-muh duh duang-ren tchen wah" my own self, but yeah, I'd even like to see her in her own graphic novel series (the more graphic the better). Oh, & Doncoat? Christina, LOL. Best answer, particularly since it's better to be a smart ass than a dumb shit!
