I had an idea that I wanted to get out to fellow Firefly/Serenity fans that I posted at the official Browncoats.SerenityMovie site; I hope it's okay if I also re-post it here in the hopes of reaching as many people as quickly as possible...

As everyone knows, the Serenity DVD will be released in just a few short days. The better sales are, the better our chances of seeing a sequel (either a theatrical release or something direct to DVD; I'm sure Joss & Co. would see to it that a direct-to-DVD movie would still be a terrific story!).

In addition to buying copies for ourselves, with the holidays upon us, we could also buy copies as gifts for friends and relatives, especially if such gifts were going to be in the form of movies or something science fictional anyway.

More importantly, I would like to encourage people to check with their local libraries within the next few days to see if those libraries will be getting it and, if not, to make a request for it. I just made a purchase request with my local library recently.

Library purchases not only mean more DVD sales, but will also bring in new fans. New DVDs are often shelved separately or are labeled as new, and people looking at the DVD shelf for a movie to watch will often give a new movie a chance under such circumstances even if it's not something that they would normally go out of their way for. Many of those people will love the movie, and some might be motivated to take a look at the Firefly DVDs and/or to watch for the Serenity sequel when (let's be optimistic here) it comes out. Because of my purchase request, my library will now have it, and other people in my home town will see it, and some of those will become fans; you can do the same in your home town.

Also, please consider borrowing it from your library for a day or so, even if you're planning on buying a copy yourself. The number of patrons borrowing an item at the public library is considered something of a vote, and it makes a difference when library boards of directors make their decisions as to what to keep or weed out, and what to acquire in the future.

If you are reading this before Dec. 20, please contact your library as soon as you can; all it takes is a few minutes to pick up the phone and call. After the release date, some libraries will already have Serenity on the shelves, and if your library doesn't have it yet, they may then choose to interloan it from another library in your area rather than purchase their own copy. (I wish I had thought of this stuff earlier.) If you're reading this after...well, it's still worth a try. (Even after the 20th, sooner is still better than later for contacting your library. In the first few days or weeks, most copies of new DVDs have been borrowed by library patrons, and are therefore unavailable for interloan, so your library might still end up purchasing their own copy.)

Please also contact other Firefly/Serenity fans and fangroups you know, and pass this recommendation on to them. The more people we have checking with their local libraries, the better.

We can still hope to see the sequels to Serenity, and we can definitely still contribute positively toward the goal of getting those sequels made.

I am a librarian, and know that libraries are always looking for donations, especially shiny ones (and that does not mean stuff like the 10 years worth of National Geographic that you've had down in your basement!!!), and a copy or two of Serenity is a good idea. Even academic libraries would want it, as students love to see things other than the in-class, curriculum oriented movies.

So if you have run out of friends to give the DVD to for x-mas, stop at your local library and let them know you want to donate one. It is tax deductible (as long as you get a receipt). You could also make it an anonymous, and drop it in a book drop bin. Write a note on it indicating it's a donation.

Another thing that I have done, is asked for the DVD as a present. Yes, Im sending it out as presents too, but whenever a family member or friend has asked me what I want for Christmas I tell them Serenity. And if they know me well enough then they ask, but won't you already have a copy? And I tell them that yes, I will, but what you're really giving me for christmas is the chance for a sequel!

Besides giving the DVDs as gifts and library donations, folks can also post guerrilla marketing in the appropriate public places. Like the library donation, it'll help bring in people you'll never meet. It's also very helpful in promoting the film if you can use some of the great reviews that Universal bizarrely is not including in the official advertisements; "Two thumbs up" and that sort of thing. But yes, we need to do all we can to help the DVD sales, cuz those are going to decide the fate of the 'verse.
