The fight between Malcom and the Operative is about my favorite fight in any film. We all know that Malcom can hold his own but isnt exactly Bruce Lee... He's so extremely pain tolerant and never gives up; confident even. I seriously thought Malcom was screwed when the Operative tried to stop him.

Malcom pretty much got the shit kicked out of him, though. But the most unnerving part is when he was stabbed in the torso. Did the sword go all the way through? Even if it didnt, you do you know what that would can do to a person?

Malcom must be so used to pain and wounds that his body has learned to subside the shock (which happens) - this enables you to sustain more hits without the usually effects, such as shock.

Even if the wound doesnt kill you, you'd still be down. Any comments?

You must own the pain, welcome it, embrace it, then you are the master. It can be done but it takes an enormous will. Mal is all about will....

I've noticed that a few of the scary wounds the crew has suffered have been in about the same spot; i.e., the Left upper quadrant of the abdomen.
That's really the best place to have something metal go through you (torso-wise). South of the spleen and lung, left of the descending aorta, pretty much just bowel-type stuff.
Kaylee got shot there by the Fed, Simon took a hit there from a reaver. Cool sciencey stuff! lol

Also, Mal got shot there in OoG. It seems to be Joss's favourite part of the body, next to feet.

You should have seen the stomach stabbing in the advance screenings. The way they had it then, there was no way he would have been able to continue the way he did.

I think the way it ended up in the final cut, it's supposed to be more of a partially-failed stabbing.

Mal has an incredible tolerance for pain. This is evident through most of the series: 'War Stories', 'Out of Gas', 'Serentiy'. If there is one thing that Mal has learned through his life, it is pain. Now, this is mostly opinion, but I believe that the fight between Mal and the operative made perfect sense. The only reason Mal survived such an encounter is because he is used to dealing with massive amounts of pain. Yes, he got stabbed right through the whatever, but this is Malcolm Reynolds that we are dealing with. He is used to it, and will endure much more before his life is done.

Speaking of people who got stabbed in that area, I am certain that Cordelia got an iron gurder through the same place, in a Buffy episode.

I think the reason for stomach wounds in movies is simple: The stomach is not a vital organ* and the characters still can walk, talk and fight (at least for a few minutes). When you think about it that's nearly the only area you can have a large wound without loosing any bodily abilities (except the abdominals of course).

The amount of pain is another question, personally In think Joss went a bit over the top in the BDM. I don't mind that much though.

And if it's not a stomach wound, it's the old stand-by: the shoulder injury.
