SHINY

Here are the results of being stuck in bed with the flu over Christmas; hope you find it interesting rather than a commentary on my obsessiveness! Please feel free to add your own observations!

* Dr. Matthias actually gives his guards a brief look to signal them to attack the op

* It's hard to hear, but when Mal tells Kaylee to "quit fiddling" under the Mule as they are about to leave for the heist, he says "I want my ship running smooth when we get back", to which Kaylee responds, "have faith, captain" and mal replies: "not today." Great characterization and plot foreshadowing disguised as witty banter.

* After they shoot the Reaver that survived the barnswallow collision, River says, "He didn't lie down...they never lie down", which is actually backwards, since when they get to Miranda it's, "none of them fell, they just lay down".

* There's a spiral parasol similar to the one Kaylee has in the pilot episode that you can see in the crowd as she leaves the ship after telling Simon not to fly in anything with a Capasan 38 engine (or what I like to call Kaylee's "neither a borrower nor a lender be" speech)

* After asking for an explanation for River's superhuman barfighting skills, when Mal throws Simon on the table, Kaylee jumps from one chair to another with a priceless expression/reaction that's so perfectly Kaylee

* When Jayne asks, "In earnest Mal, why'd you bring her back on?" Mal and Zoe share a look, calling back to Zoe's comment earlier about never leaving a man behind...

* Many have commented on how the circling camera lands on Wash as Jayne says "this whole world's dead for no reason" but in one of the deleted scenes, when Simon asks "who's death?" and River screams "EVERYBODY'S!!!", who is the very next person we see on screen? Book.

* The op actually gives Mal the idea to disguise Serenity as a reaver ship

* When Mal goes to Inara's shuttle after his "I hear a word from any of you that ain't helping me out or taking your leave, I will shoot you down" speech, it makes me think he has often used that shuttle as his sanctuary for comfort/solitude (in fact, the deleted scene shows him being momentarily surprised at Inara's presence, indicating he had gotten used to being able to take refuge in her old, and vacant, shuttle)

* The op's "define disappeared" parallels Mal's "define interesting"

* River retching after seeing the hologram symbolizing her finally expelling the destructive memories forced upon her, hence "I'm all right"

* During the tail-spin, Jayne -- the most mercenary and selfish of the crew -- is the one checking everyone's seatbelts like a concerned flight attendant!

* As they move out of the cargo bay after the crash landing, it always struck me as odd that Jayne looks up, but after re-watching the movie I realized that the cargo bay is level with the bottom of the 'pit', while it's the nose/cockpit of the ship that is level with the landing strip, where the Reavers are (and you can momentarily see search lights scanning the cockpit when Jayne looks up)

* Simon asks for adrenaline for his gut wound, much like Mal used when he was shot in the gut in Out of Gas.

* Though the op told his men to "destroy it all", almost all of the monitors in Mr. Universe's "office" displayed the Miranda recording when Mal transmitted it.

* In the funeral scene, Jayne is smoking a cigar; one of the deleted scenes shows Jayne giving a few cigars to Book (one of which we see Book smoking while talking to Mal at night), but then deciding to keep one for himself.

* The tears in River's eye while she fixes some wiring during the repairing Serenity scenes

* In the extended Mal/Operative final conversation deleted scene, Mal telling the Operative "you still standing there when that engine starts, you never will find out" calls back to Mal kicking Crow into the engine in The Train Job.

By the way, I've also updated the Serenity Bloopers/Shout-outs page at browncoats.com, so go take a look: http://www.browncoats.com/index.php?ContentID=433ed68443f0d

Gotta say I noticed most of those in the cinema :D But then again, I did go three zillion times - the first one I've quoted especially, I would say is pretty loud!

And the thing about River - it's not backwards at all IMO - because she's talking about the Reaver, and the Reavers are the ones that DIDN'T just lie down like most of the population of Miranda.

It might be loud, but it was obscured a bit by the whirring of the engine and other sounds, at least to me -- and I saw it several times in the theatre and specifically tried to pick out what Kaylee was saying!

We didn't see the actual "office" i.e., the place with the lovebot at any time after Mal runs the broadwave. All those lit monitors were in the generator room, I swear!

When Mal says to Jayne "no grenades" and walks away, as the camera follows Mal, in the background, Zoe is talking to Jayne about the arsenol (sp?) he wants to take with him on the heist and she says something like "we're robbing the place, not occupying it" (commenting on the amount of weaponry he wants to take).

Definately missed that one at the theatre (all 3 times that I went). Wasn't until the dvd that I noticed. Even then it was kinda of hard to catch.

What I noticed on DVD were the little details that I'd missed the three times in the theater. Things like Jayne's pendant...what is that? St. Christopher medallion?

The new furniture! Serenity's been to planet Ikea! I like it, but it doesn't seem as...well..homey.

The glances Mal gives Inara, both on Haven, and again at Mr. Universes place, just before he leaves them. Says so much with just a glance.

Is anybody else watching the outtakes repeatedly and laughing until they cry? The Haven one is just priceless!

In one of the deleted scenes(or maybe in the script in the Visual Companion) with Mal/Inara, Inara asks Mal a question to which he responds: "I don't know." and she comes back with something to the effect of "I don't know, is not a very good answer."
In the end Mal asks if she's ready to leave.
Inara: "I don't know"
Mal: "Good answer"

I finally got the DVD. The first thing I noticed - sorry to go negative - was just how bad the soundtrack is. The movie never felt right to me at the theater, but I really couldn't put my finger on it. Watching the DVD from the comfort of my living room, I was able to really pay attention.

Everything else was there. The writing, the acting, the effects - all spot on and right up there with Whedon's best. But man, Newman's score was just lame. I'd never really thought about how much a score can affect the experience, but it sure made a difference.

I keep thinking about how great it would be if someone were to re-edit the soundtrack. Maybe use Greg Edmonson's stuff from the series.

I noticed this little thing when i watched it agian last night.

Zoe: How much you got left?
Jayne: One mag... and my swinging cod. So little.

This banter happens after they retreat into the hallway, before Simon gets shot and after Jayne throws a grenade in the room.

I really have to disagree with that. I found the music suiting and well written. I love listening to the soundtrack, it is like a guide for the movie to play in my head. The songs carry good emotion

I noticed for the first time that when river starts the fight in the bar there are protective sheilds that go up over the dancers windows. Never noticed that in the theater. Love the grenade exchange between zoe and Jayne, heard that the second time at the theater.

Also at the begining when the operative says something like "because the situation is even less simple then you realize" or something like that forshadowing the whole miranda thing. Which would say that the operative lies when he says he doesnt know what river knows

And random thought when i first saw the movie and they show MR universe's planet with the ion cloud my first thought was that i must be books home planet, where they all have his hair! Cause the cloud reminded me of his hair lol.

And i really like the soundtrack.

I noticed

-That in the hanger bay while Jayne is dumping the reaver corpse and junk, Kaylee finds a catilyzer (the famous broken part from 'Out of Gas') and fidgets with it.

-The reaver's facial mutilations (redness and swelling) are reminiscent of radiation exposure.

-A lot of the reaver ships look like Junkion vessels from Transformers the Movie.

-River is wearing slips (or somethings very close) through most of the movie. Actually I had noticed in the theater but tried very hard to not let that distract me from the rest of flick.

-Wash is wearing his signature hawiian shirt underneath his jumpsuit. You can see the collars.

-Mr. Universe is that dude from '10 Things I Hate About You.' "Hates you with the fire of a thousand suns..." lol. That line cracks me up to this day ;)

That reminds me of the only thing I noticed until I watched the DVD (for the 3rd time)...

When Jayne wears the hat into town, it disappears in the next scene in the bar. Apparently it's just hanging around his neck. You can see it when he goes to the counter to get something to eat while Mal and Kaylee are fighting in the front ground.
I always thought it was a sort of bad continuation type of thing which bothered me.

Oh and Wash is such a gentleman...he held on to Zoe's card/key to the gun cabinet in the bar for her. *giggles* I find that to be the sweetest thing I've ever seen him do.

Can I take the middle ground? The score was good, but could have been better. The music when we first see Serenity breaking atmo and pieces start to fall off: perfect. So very incredible. The music at the end when Serenity flies off: Also very very good. All the stuff in the middle: ehhhhh, not so much. Not bad. Just could have been better.

And the acustic "Ballad of Serenity" at the end of the credits. That was awsome. I almost cried. Any tabs around for that?

And how does Mal get the idea to disguise the ship as a reaver ship from the op?

Well, it's supposed to be a standard innoculation people get when they go planetside...it's one of the hardest lines to hear/understand, but before the 'bit of a rockety ride' line, Mal tells Simon 'guess I better get innoced before we hit planetside'

Maybe they destroyed all the transmission equipment and didn't bother with the screens? Can't really do any damage as far as 'sending' a signal with the screens. OR the alliance is just incompetent. Maybe this was the same group of purplebellies that looked for Simon and River in "Bushwacked".....under a Placemat.....TWICE!

Something I always thought was important, but which has nothing to do with this thread is the ideal of Browncoats vs. Purplebellies.

(Someone said "purplebellies" is the reason I bring it up.)

The the Independants are named after the color of their coats the Alliance is known by the color of its armor. It really gives you an idea of the divide between the two sides of the civil war.

In the opening sequence where Simon is breaking River out something hit me during his conversation with the Doctor. At one point Simon's image freezes while the Doctor walks past him. Not as in the actor stopped moving. As in they digitally froze his image in post production; a person behind him is still moving.

My wife and I were trying to decide last night if that was done for effect or if it were done in post because they wanted to fake the walking past part.

I remember someone, I'm not sure who, pointed out that at the end of the movie Book's monument is placed next to Mr. Universe's and Wash's. They asked the rather disturbing question, "How did his body get there?"

Of course the consensus seems to be that those are not grave markers, but simple monuments of remembrance.

I noticed this in the theater, but haven't seen it mentioned yet.

In the Maidenhead bar, Jayne has a large patch on his left shoulder. It's the same patch we saw when he opened the shirt of the guy he slammed head-first into the ground on Lilac ("Looks like this is the place!")

That might also explain why the regular military stripes patch he also has on his shirt in the Maidenhead is upside-down; he doesn't know any better, he's just taking trophies! I guess Mal won't let him take ears....

I realized that River is actually re-attaching the pulse beacon during the rewiring shot at the end of the movie.

The CGI walkway moves when Mal walks on it after defeating the Operitive. I did'nt realize that they were CG untill I heard Joss's comentary. They just looked so real I thought they were a practical effect.

My ears say:
Three full mags and my swingin' cod. That's all.

Could anyone explain to me in two of the deleted scenes why they call out "Summer!" when they screw up? Just curious...

"Yolanda?"

I played the DVD on subtitles and that's what the subtitles claim ... but I still think my Jayne said, "And it's full." It's way more Jayne that way.

I had just assumed they were on Haven at that point, and had brought Wash and Mr. Universe there...

It is from the show.

If memory serves (it often doesn't) it is from the last scene of Objects in Space, it's a long take that included everyone in the cast, and Summer was at the end. So everything would be going perfectly and then she'd mess it up.

Whenever that happened Nathan yelled, "Summer!" Then he messed up a take right at the start and, even though Summer was two rooms over and in no way responsible, yelled, "Summer!" as if it was her fault.

That caught on so any time something went wrong, even if she wasn't on set, they'd yell, "Summer!"

Again, my memory is highly fallible.

It's Zoe's voice... She's saying "Sir--" and gets cut off when Mal says "Just tell me when we're close."

WHITEFALL

Bah, I'm lazy, I can't read the whole thread atm... but I noticed that the actual piece of plastic that is "the signal" reaver transmission... is shaped like the opening titles with a rectangle in front of a circle. Go figure.

Probably not a coincidence tho.

I survived a day in Whitefall and all I got was this lousy signature!

COMPMAN67

* After they shoot the Reaver that survived the barnswallow collision, River says, "He didn't lie down...they never lie down", which is actually backwards, since when they get to Miranda it's, "none of them fell, they just lay down".

*****This is not wrong.. The Reavers were the less than one percent that were effected diffently ..
They never laid down.. It was the others that were made Passive.********

* During the tail-spin, Jayne -- the most mercenary and selfish of the crew -- is the one checking everyone's seatbelts like a concerned flight attendant!

***** Jayne showed that he does care when he found out about Rivers brain getting cut into in the Ariel Episode. Its not the first time he has shown concern for members of the crew****
