use up your points now!
They just sent out this e-mail:

Quote:

Browncoats,

We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty!

Serenity was the #1 DVD upon its release! This was a huge success that would not have happened without the support and dedication of The Browncoats. On behalf or Universal, I would like to thank you all for everything you have done to promote Serenity.

It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that on January 6, 2006, The Browncoats will shut down. We have had some wonderful times over these 19 months: met people from around the world, had interesting discussions about Serenity and every topic under the sun on the message boards, had lots of laughs (“I can’t believe Shepherd Book is Mal’s father *spoiler* ” was a personal favorite), and seen some sadness as well. There really has never been a community quite like The Browncoats.

Of course this is not the end of The Browncoats; there are many other sites that will allow the community to continue on. If you do get nostalgic for these boards, check out http://serenitymovie.org , a forum similar in look to this one set up by Gossi - one of our own.

All of your orders from the store are being processed, and will be shipped over the next 2 weeks. If you haven’t placed an order, please do so - your points aren’t going to be of any use once the site closes down. Remember we are at http://browncoats.serenitymovie.com

Once again a huge thank you from everyone here!

S_L

I'll be sorry to see it go, I've had fun there.
But right at the moment, don't waste those points you've earned!

Yeah, it's a shame. I'm lucky I managed to get there fast... I had about 18000 points so I managed to snag one of the last signed lithographs (Inara), and a mini-poster too.

There's no place I can be since I found Serenity.

So what?

fireflyfans.net was here even before the official FOX site for the series, and it will be here years after the last Serenity sequel is released. And there are other sites as well that will continue exploring the 'verse. Browncoats.com, stillflying.net, serenitymovie.net, summerglau.co.uk, etc.

I think it shows that for Universal it was just a business thing, not a passion like Haken and the other site creators have for our Big Damn Heroes.

Hey.
just want to say that there is also the new site setup by cool Gossi.
www.serenitymovie.org
It may not be the Universal site... but its an alternative for people who are used to navigating that particular site.

hey 2,000 points is enough to buy you a bandana
window cling
or a set of Serenity chop sticks....

which is better than a sharp stick in the eye
(unless you aren't skill w/chop sticks, in which case maybe it is exactly like a sharp stick in the eye...)

I am grieved that Universal wouldn't want to keep the site up for the day when they green light the sequel....
but of course I love fireflyfans the best anyway, and have never felt the need for a better home.

I love it here the best too, embers, but I wonder how come they didn't leave it open for all the new fans coming aboard. And it worries me that they didn't leave it open for the sequel.... does this have any bearing on their outlook for one, you suppose?

Well this sucks. I just got there too like FollowMal did.

There are a ton of members on the site too. Damn does this wanna make me . I figure a bunch will head this way to our home, and I'll welcome all of them with open arms, but I gotta say Universal.

It makes me that no matter what we do, these people ignore it. I mean, the movie just came out on DVD and it's been on top ever since, even on Amazon was it on top with the pre-orders. All of us have this passion for it for sake and our ranks increase. I just hope that there's a greater plan in the works and we just don't see it yet.

Adam, Chris Buchanan and Greg Edmondson still post and Nathan still lurks at the OB. Joss posts at Whedonesque. Summer posts occasionally at her UK site and Jewel has her blog.

I don't know if Morena posts at her site and Ron claims to not own a computer. :) Gina has a fabulous site, but I don't think she posts regularly. I have never seen Sean or Alan post anywhere, but maybe I haven't been looking.

well this is discouraging, the e-mail I got said Jan 6th, but the blog at the Universal home page says Jan 3rd:

FloralBunny: Joss still posts at Whedonesque:
http://whedonesque.com/

but Nathan doesn't....he used to lurk here, at the old OB
(where Adam still posts regularly):

I worry that this indicates some lack of faith on Universal's part,
but we do have this wonderful site,
and we have Joss...who'll keep up the love with the comics
and hopefully some nice novelizations...

Thank you, Embers. That's useful.
We could beg Universal to keep the board up (offer sexual favors?) but of course shutting it down undoubtedly saves them precious dollars, so there's no real expectation they'd cooperate.

It's more fun here, anyway.

("Nice novelizations" is an oxymoron in my book.
Heh.)

Off now to buy DVDs and a book, I think.

Browncoats to Close 01.03.06

Posted by: on Dec 29, 2005 04:12pm EST

Sadly, the time has come for this site to close down. We have been through a lot together over the past year and a half, and it is with great sadness that I post this message. Please redeem all of your points in the store if you have not already, as they will do you no good after the site closes down. Gossi has set up a near identical forum at http://serenitymovie.org, so The Browncoats will continue there. Thanks to each and every one of you for making this site, and Serenity such a huge success.

Keep Flyin’!

Alright, people time for a pistol blazen charge here. Yeah I like FFF.net to and only one I'm signed up with at moment, but nan da yo, kocchi cho baka da yo!!! (For those that didn't catch it basically WTF in Japanese) Here we are losing another nice big shiny advertising place not to mention all the fans that have signed on with this one. Yes there are other sites, but your screwing with the support and it dosn't make sense. Instead leave it how it is. I'm sure other people could take over managing the site or at least help in the chore. majiF'en de!!! Its reasons like this that had us shaken our heads when Capt ordered us to charge the damn cannons (Sorry Mal, diff Capt) Well there is my 2 cents. mata, Ookami yori

Time for some flanken moves to dislodge these here Alliance boys!!!

Way ahead of you, ncbrowncoat.

At the Flanvention, I personally handed the BDHs their 13th Independent Airborne Gosling badges. In case you don't know what that means, some of us frequent chatters at The Juggled Gosling (as we've come to dub the chat room in this site) have a sort of crew. Membership is randomly assigned, and now the BDHs are members too. One hopes that they will start coming here to post more often...

And as for FFF.net being here, well, some of the BDHs said this back at Dragon*Con:

http://users.adelphia.net/~tracyg36/FFFsalutations.mov

That good enough for ya?

America loves a winner!

Just got my e-mail from there and posted my goodbye. *sulk*.

Seems rather quick to scuttle the site , after the DVD just reached No.1 and all. FFF.net is still my primo site, but I enjoyed the 'versal board, as well.

On the lighter side, I just saw another SERENITY sig on one of the other non FF boards I frequent. Oh, and ran into a few more Browncoats while playing Halo2 Live.

So, with the bad, there's also some good. I guess Seinfeld was right after all....it all evens out. heh heh.

Ecgordon is right. I never went over there because I had a funny feeling about them, like I didn't quite trust them, and now they have axed all their loyal fans out of the blue, without a second thought.

Before people go rushing over to "Gossi's new site", have a closer look at all his former posts on Whedonesque, where for so long he claimed only to have "contacts at Universal", but now they openly say he is "one of their own". Why didn't he admit that before? I can't forget how angry he got whenever anyone criticized the appalling promotion of Serenity, and it made me wonder if he might be a promoter himself.

Who needs points and prizes and all that promotional-type stuff? Our own Haken was here from the very beginning, and I hope people will stand by him no matter what.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Yep. Saw that comin'.

A lot of us just knew that the 'Versal board would shut down some time after the DVD release date. No sense in them keeping it open in their eyes I suppose. It is a viral marketing site after all. Seems to me they could stand to leave it open a might longer though.

Guess it is up to us (AGAIN!) to push the DVD & spread the word.

Okay, I'm so commenting on this.

I am *NOT* an employee of Universal. I never have been, nor will I ever be more than likely (I'm the person who petitioned Universal over the DVD cover, hello?).

The email Universal sent out did *NOT* say I am "one of their own", as so wonderfully quoted. That's completely false, and made up.

I think it's wonderful I spent all this time helping promote the movie - to secure a future for the story - unpaid. I did a lot of work on the promotion in the UK and online, and paid for a lot of it myself. I have many misgivings about the Universal side of things, although I think they tried as best they could. If anybody is remotely interested in actual, you know, facts - you can check out the Whedonesque topic from last nigth where me and Joss are talking about Universal's promotion of the film. The .org site is looking to be seriously expensive to run, and time consuming, and I'm doing it all myself to make sure the fan base has another home.

Please don't fling mud in my direction.

Finally (12/30/2005), got the email about the Universal Official Serenity Website closing January 3.

I guess it took awhile to send out all those emails-over 75,000.

Embers, if you check the subject of the email it says Browncoats to Close 01.03.06

I believe the January 6, 2006 is a typo.

PLEASE edit the subject of your original heading to say Jan 3rd. You may have to edit and save it twice.
