I don't think the word is getting out fast enough. While at the video store last night buying a couple of copies of Serinity for some coworkers who have been reluctant to see it, with Sernity being number one on Amazon, etc.. I didn't necissarily expect their to be 100+ copies of Serenity for rent... but I was at least expecting maybe 30-40... and what did I find??? A lousy 7-8 copies for rent!!!!! And they only had 3 of them facing out.. where the rest of them would be stacked behind them. Now this was at blockbuster mind you!! Only 7 or 8 copies for rent???? Five of them where checked out. Not having been to the video store for a while I did a quick run through of all the new relaeses.. and I was pissed. There was like 30-40 copies of some direct to video (I think) movie with Martin Lawerence called Rebound (with just about all of them checked out), there was like some 70 or or so copies of Mad about Dogs(or something like that) with probably at least 40 or so of them checked out... then there was like 100+ copies of some movie called The Exercisim of Emily... with probably about 80 or more of them checked out. WTF??? I mean.. don't get me wrong.. I haven't seen any of those movies.. they may be fine movies in their own right.. but come on now!!! I wouldn't beleive anyone of them would come close to Serenity.

But that shows me two things.. number one: That the word isn't getting out fast enough.. and number two: The general puplic's taste in movies is pretty pathetic (nothing new there.. I suppose that's already well known) Which is why Firefly/Serenity will never be a monster blockbuster that we all think it should be. If it catored to the lowest common denominator like so many other movies.. it wouldn't be the heart- warming, funny, intelligent, intense, witty, indescribable show that we all know and love. And because of what it is, Just like Mal and crew.. it will always fly just under the radar.. but what we need.. is to get it to be just a tiny faint blip on the radar.. no matter how faint.. but just enough.. to get us a sequal.. or return of the show!!! I was hopping that tons of people who only had a vague notion of Serenity.. or heard (or overheard) someone talking about it.. would see it at the video store and finally rent it and be drawn in. But with what I see a the video store (only 8 copies).. I don't see that happeneing .. so we need to not stop. You don't need to kill yourself.. just keep loaning out those DVD sets.. I figure just let the show speak for itself.. give people just a taste by loaning out the first disc of the set.. and tell them to watch the piolet episode.. if they love it and ask more questions tell them to go buy the DVD set and the movie.. if not.. then just move onto someone else.. rince wash repeat..

Just don't stop.. If nothing more I need to see the ultimate conclusion to Mal and Inara's story..

Yeah,
I went to Best Buy first thing in the morning and bought Serenity when it came out, after that I went to blockbuster to rent whatever else came out on that tuesday. Just like you I was shocked to see they only had about 10 copies available. I was actually really pissed off considering how many copies they bring in on lame ass movies. Hopefully people wont forget its there and will rent it when its available.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Odds are that Blockbuster ordered so few copies based on the box office numbers Serenity posted. That seems to be the way they do things.

I have not been into a movie rental place since September I think, so I have not checked on the Serenity situation, but I may do so on the way home tonight.

I'm a manager at a movie store and i just though i would give you heads up on how 'most' stores do there rental ordering. It's about how well it did in theaters near where the store is, and how many people ask about the movie. The more people who asked for it before hand we can kinda call the people who tell us what we are going to get and ask for more. At my store we got 5 copies, BUT where i would talk about with people demand got higher and we got more. We don't really get to pick what we get or how many, but in a few cases if we get enough request and stuff, we'll get more. The company i work for sent us alot of posters and wall hangers for the movie, so that helped more people see it. But we did go from 5 copys to it being our store most rented movie for a bit.

If it makes you feel better, Smaug, the Hollywood Video near my house has an entire rack full of Serenity, something like 6-8 shelves-worth, prob 80-100 copies. And the last time I went there on a Friday night, all but one were rented.

Judging from some of the other posts on this topic, it seems that the situation varies quite a bit from place to place. In some areas, the rental stores have lots of copies and can't keep them on the shelves. Elsewhere, the interest just doesn't seem to be there.

I haven't checked the Blockbusters around here (Massachusetts), but I have the feeling this might be a fairly low-interest neck of the nape.

Countessmilady,

How does that translate to a movie like Rebound, US Box office take of only $16 million AND AWFUL AWFUL reviews having like 5 times as many copies on the shelf as Serenity? Hell.. there was some direct to vidoe POS with Burt Renolds called Cloud 9 (turn stippers into vollyball star POS, which apparently doesn't even show any skin, and comming from me who surely doesn't mind strippers and LOVES beach volleyball, you think even I might be drawn to it at least a little but even with that I think it looks totally stupid), but it has as many copies on the shelf as Serenity!! Since there was no box office take to go off of.. and you can't tell me anyone had even heard of this POS let alone ASKED for it, how can a movie like Cloud 9 have as many copies on the shelf as Serenity?

Casual, yes.. that does make me feel better.. lol

I would depend on place. I'm from a SMALL middle of no where town so i get less b/c of less people around here to rent...

Well, Rebound around here did do good. and we got only 1 Cloud 9. If there is no box office near then they have some way of guessing how many movies to order. If they rent well then more will get ordered....like at my store....

PS - It's C. 9 is not worth your time...

Patience. Serenity is like Firefly. It will take time.

Each day, each week, each month brings us closer. The words is spreading, but it takes time.

Its (imo) far better that there is some sale/rent every single day for the next 3 years (like it has been with firefly) then a BIG sale in the beginning and then forgotten.

Jayne: All those years of preacher training, getting knocked out by one bounty hunter
Book: Oh, dont get me wrong. I gave him a hell of a fight
Jayne: Epic i'm guessing

Wow is this an American thing or am I missing something here in England? How big are these video stores if they have 100 copies of a movie? I'm sure our video store has like 10 max for a movie like Lord of the Rings but usually about 3 copies for new releases. Even our blockbuster doesn't have that many.

Does anyone in the UK have a video shop like that? Maybe in London? Am I just showing up the fact that I live in a countryish county like Wiltshire.
