Hey, all...

Got hooked on FireFly when my brother introduced the show to me. Love the stories, the characters, the whole 'feel' of the thing.

And I just rented Serenity and watched that for the first time. I have my concerns, however, about Jewel Staite. Most times, her sweetness and beauty carry her through scenes charmingly. Other times, though, the dialogue seems unnatural. This is not just true for her, but I noticed it most with Kaylee in 'Serenity.' (EDIT note: I overstated my quibble with the movie -- and I really didn't mean to hurt anyone!)

Oh well. It's all good. Even with the sometimes-clunky dialogue, the series kicked butt.

Hi and welcome.
Thanks for the spolier, some haven't seen the movie yet and don't know who dies.... Well I do now

Edit:
Bless... And thanks for the title edit

I find Kaylee lovely, she has an innocence about her that is charming, although what one person finds charming another may find sickly sweet.

I disagree. She is soooo sweet - and there can only be one explanation for me thinking that she is sweet - namely the acting :)

Ok, she probably wont win any oscars contests any time soon, but she'll fly :P

Book: Oh, dont get me wrong. I gave him a hell of a fight
Jayne: Epic i'm guessing

The actors just do what the director says.

Are you kidding?

Kaylee is my favorite character and my god Jewel is by far one of the most stunning woman I have ever seen.

Kaylee Frye: Goin' on a year now I ain't had nothin' twixt my nethers weren't run on batteries!

Capt. Malcolm Reynolds: Oh, God! I can't *know* that!

Jayne Cobb: I could stand to hear a little more.

You gotta love it.

Boo! Hiss!

I like Jewel's character and I thought her acting was good. She's sweet, innocent, cheerful and always tries to see the best in people. (Actually now I've typed that out it does sound rather sickly sweet but, damnit, she's great). She's a required member I think because she's, for want of a better phrase, the glue that keeps everyone else together and her sunny demeanour raises moral.

Honestly, I think that she is a less despensible character than Wash.

Like I said, it's all good.

Maybe it's the writing I have a problem with, more than her. How can an actor deliver 'twixt my nethers' and sound conversational?

Mal, similarly, seems to slog his way through some of the Fireflific gobbledy-gook.

Again, it's worth it, since the story is worth hearing. But some of the lines are either too odd or too much a challenge for these actors.

Whoa now I am sorry but when Adam Baldwin says "gorram" it feels like a dirty word, they all do a good job with it. Now if it seems that when Kaylee says "gorram" it seems forced it is probably because her character is so sweet and bad words from a sweet persons mouth sound forced and the fact that she can pull that off speaks wonders about her. She is the heart, warmth, and sunshine of Serenity, and hell she isn't even happy the whole movie. Just watch the movie with the Joss comentary and listen to how many times he speaks of her with just awe and praise in his voice. It is the balance of characters that makes this great and without Kaylee they would all be left in the dark with their self pity, fears, and burdens.

I very much would rather Kaylee had bit the dust instead of Wash.

Welcome to the site Hauger! Glad to have you aboard!

I disagree w/ you about Jewel's acting. I have met Jewel several times & have had occasion to speak to her & see her acting in several different shows & movies. Kaylee is not Jewel. They are quite different actually. Jewel plays Kaylee exactly the way she is written. She is for the most part innocent, inexperienced, and too sweet & bubbly for her own good at times. She is however the heart of Serenity. It is her innocence that keeps the crew grounded & shows us that the 'verse Joss has created is not so hard & bleak as one might suspect at first. Watch the series Firefly that the movie is based off of & you will see what I mean.

If you want to see the opposite spectrum of Jewel's acting ability watch the DVD set "Wonderfalls" & she plays an entirely different character in the later episodes of that short lived series. You can also watch her performance in "Widow on the Hill". It was a made for tv movie not too long ago. Excellent showing of her talent.

If you listen to the Director's (aka Josh aka God of the 'verse) commentary, he literally gushes over Jewel's performances - listen in particular to his comments on her work on the Serenity pilot (strawberry scene) and Objects in Space (scene with Jubal Early in the engine room). He also states in the book that his favorite line in the BDM is the one about the "C..(something)engines, they fall right out of the sky" which he says Jewel nails perfectly. So, if Josh is happy, I'm happy!

Granted her chirpy delivery does seem grating at time. In fact, I love Jayne and Mal's interaction in the Serenity pilot when they talk about duct-taping her mouth shut. But, hey, that's life....there are those people who drive us nuts but gorramit, we love 'em just the same.

Are you nuts?! Jewel Staite is a terrific actor. Her reactions are wonderfully intuitive and easily convey very hard to convey emotions. She never fails to heighten the moment and enhance everybody elses performance. Who else could've pull off unrequieted puppy love for that robotic gangrenous toe of a robot Simon? You just don't like the character she plays.

Word! Just like Joss gushes in the BDM commentary: in a second's change of expression she conveyed everything the audience needed to know about her relationship with Simon. Who needs lengthy exposition when you have THOSE EYES to work with? :dreamy sigh emoticon goes here:

You must be kidding. Or else spoiling for trouble.

We, hereabouts, enjoy the countrified way our BDHs and their cohorts/adversaries speak. We love Badger's (Mark Sheppard) Cockney. And who among us will forget, "Here lies my beloved Zoe, my autumn flower, somewhat less attractive now that she's all corpse-ified and gross..."

...Or any of a thousand lines you see quoted in people's sigs around here. And you've got problems with the dialogue?!? And you start off by attacking Jewel Staite's Kaylee, one of the universally beloved characters on the show? Not to mention that Jewel Staite -- the youngest of the cast members, btw -- is a genuinely sweet person, as well as a damfine actress.

Maybe you should pick a different topic before things get ugly.

Incredulously,

umm...

First hes new so no need to attack him, namely because when someones new they dont realize that Kaylee is the universal sweetheart

Second hes just voicing his opinion

Other than that i would have to say (not trying to chime in on the Kaylee support group and further toss away a new fan) Kaylee acts that way because thats how her character is. She is naturally brutely honest, and shes not supposed to seem like the smooth talker because most of the time shes trying to impress Simon which makes her nervous. I love Jewel as Kaylee, i think she does a great job, but you're entitled to your opinion. I think Kaylee is an essential character. like it says in the DVDs, she's what makes them a family. She really does give that family aspect. Take her out of the picture and you lose some of that. she's like the sweet innocent child (although we all know she has her wild and naughty side).

I've got no problem with 'new'. But when 'new' starts a thread of his very own, first attacking Jewel's acting, then attacking Joss' dialogue, then saying 'It's all good' because it's probably a combination of Joss' bad writing and the entire cast's deficient acting skills...

Sounds like an insult to me. It may have been a genuine and heartfelt opinion on his part, as opposed to just trying to see if he could call folks names and not get called out for it. Either way -- whether it's his opinion or a sly attempt to besmirch good people's abilities -- he's wrong.

Either that or everyone here but myself agrees with his 'opinion' that the dialogue and/or acting were subpar. He -- and those that agree with/defend him -- can have their opinion, and I can strongly and vociferously disagree with them. No movie is perfect, because it's created by humans. There's no cause to slander the creator -- or especially, single out a cast member -- for something that rings a little flat to a few, who otherwise call themselves fans.

Point is, Serenity ain't the Mona Lisa. Then again, neither were any of my favorite movies. Go to IMDb and look at the 'Goofs' section for any movie, and you'll find the same is true for your faves, too.

As for "attacking" him: It's only 'playing nice' if it's a two-way street...

Just my opinion but I think the whole cast of Firefly are a very talented group of actors. They are also some of the most down to earth people in Hollywood. Almost every one of them has posted here or on the Browncoats board. They go to fan conventions not just to promote the movie but because they love the fans. Nathan has posted some great stuff on the old board and it shows his real character. He's not stuffy and too cool for the fans like some actors are. I've seen Jewel on other shows as well. One episode of Stargate Atlantis and a few years back on DaVinci's Inquest. She's got excellent acting ability and anyone that doesn't think so should STOP DRINKING THE BONG WATER! She's also one of the prettiest women in Hollywood in my book. Love those eyes. Summer Glau? Who could possibly deny that she's a great actor? What grace! What an awesome performance. Put Jewel's sweet portrayal of optimism and kindness as Kaylee, Summer's troubled tormented soul as River and Nathan's consumate portrayal of the conflicted hollowed Mal and you've got one hell of a cast of quality actors. Oh, yeah, let's not forget Adam Baldwin, Alan Tudyk, Sean Maher and Gina Torres. They all shine! Adam was great in Next of Kin and Full Metal Jacket too.

I would have to go with JAYTEE on this one. I dont think i have ever seen another show where the characters meshed so well togethor. They just work. You have all the grounds covered you have;
1)Leadership-Mal
2)judgement-Book
3)Warmth/Love-Kaylee
4)Followership-Zoe
5)Strength-Jayne (dont take this the wrong way but hes no genius)
6)Brains-Simon
7)Insanity/Innocence-River

They have all the characteristics needed for a wonderful show. And the actors play togethor perfectly. (see, The train job, OoG, and of course Serenity(movie and Firefly)

I think Jewel can handle a little honest bashing. When someone tells me my music is shitty crap that's fine with me, 'cause it is a matter of taste. As is acting. And the actors know that. No form of art is simply good or bad.

It's sweet to see many browncoats jump to her rescue, but it really isn't necessary. I am quite certain she wouldn't cry in front of the monitor
