From the empire forum -

Quote:

ORIGINAL: doubleshiny

It's a question of time for me, once he's done with Wonder Woman and Goners it will be 2008 at the least, and then there are only two years before the rights come free for the series.

Four years until the rights come free and Joss could make another tv show unhindered by fox if he wished, hmmm, is Firefly worth waitin' that long for?

You'd better bloody believe it

Some one on that forum put in that "By 2010 I doubt the franchise will have the (already limited) commerciability it has now."

I have one word, no, two, three, to say to that.

Startrek, hmm, Battlestar Galactica, Every remake ever made.

k, seven then.

Lets face it, no-one who already loves a show will ever stop loving it (with out some form of trauma anyhoo)and how many newbies whave we had this week alone?

So if anything 'commerciability' is gonna grow.

Damn you people with your names that include colons. If it is called anything other than "Firefly" it should be, "Firefly Season Two," followed closely by Season Three, then Four, and so on.

Wow, so the 10 year thing has been shot down all over tha place as something Nathan made up as a joke, yet people are still quoting it.

And I don't want to burst anyone's bubble, as I'm hoping for more adventures with the BDH as much as anyone, but some people are talking like this (probably fictional) 10 years is the only thing holding up the series returning. It's not like there're other networks banging on the door to make new Firefly eps. If someone wanted to air the show, they don't need to wait 10 years. They don't need to buy the rights from FOX either, as so many keep saying. Firefly was cancelled by FOX Network, not FOX productions. Same corporate umbrella, to be sure, but not the same entity.

Remember: Joss has had 3 series produced by FOX, but Firefly was the only one to actually air on the Network.

If a network wanted to bring Firefly back - which means paying the production costs for a new run of episodes, all they would have to do is work out a production deal with FOX. FOX wouldn't have to pay to produce the episodes (they would probably cover some costs, but not the lion's share), and would still make plenty of money off subsequent DVD sales. It'd be win-win for FOX.

But that's not happening. The numbers just aren't there. As big as the Browncoats have grown, and will continue to grow, there simply is not enough demand to justify anyone's investing in a new series, especially after the not-stellar returns on the movie.

I'm going to keep hoping, keep converting, and most importantly, keep flying in hopes of a return to the 'verse. But it's going to be a while, and if we do get more, I personally expect we'll see another movie or two long before we see another series.

Here's to hoping Firefly comes back to the small screen!

With the recent ending of the Star Wars franchise and undetermined fate of Star Trek, it is time for Firefly to step up to the plate and make a bigger name for itself as a bonified hit!

I have a plan.

This is easy:

You write the history of firefly and serenity down. Pretty good. Tell some info about sales, dvd popularity, no marketing, fan base etc..

Then add a set of Firefly

Mail to:

Donald Trump.

What if he falls in love?!?!?! :D

Jayne: All those years of preacher training, getting knocked out by one bounty hunter
Book: Oh, dont get me wrong. I gave him a hell of a fight
Jayne: Epic i'm guessing

Storymark:

The '10 years' thing is the real deal, not a joke. Although the actual term is either 5 or 7 years; Nat was just rounding the figure up. Joss himself said so, and so have Buchanan and Minear. 20th Century Fox did produce the series, which went to F*x TV, since they have right of first refusal. When they cancelled the show, they retained broadcast rights for any televised works based on "Firefly" for the ensuing (call it) ten years ("or something like that"). But everything in America is negotiable...

20th Century Fox negotiated a movie deal with Universal. SciFi Channel negotiated a deal with F*x TV to rerun old eps, but new eps were not part of that deal.

I suspect that the next step will be Vivendi-Universal negotiating with F*x TV for rights to broadcast an original Firefly mini-series (or two) on their SciFi Channel in the coming years. If that does well in ratings and subsequent DVD sales, it might lead to SciFi (Universal) picking the property up as a weekly series. They've done it before with the sickly Stargate franchise. (NB: Speaking of which, SG1 is getting better with the addition of Ben Browder of Farscape renown, imo; but it's still not up to BSG or Firefly's standards.)

Remember, too: Battlestar Galactica made its return as a miniseries, then got picked up as a series based on the strength of its ratings. The good thing about being on SciFi would be that the pressure to produce enormous ratings right off the bat ('instant heat') would be alleviated. SciFi are looking to fill their lineup with quality and are willing to wait for an audience to grow...

Whether the show would be as good as it was during its first incarnation, is another question entirely, especially since it would probably continue with events post-Serenity, without AT or RG. Whether Joss is really stoked about returning to TV regardless the format or channel or corporate support, is another question. Whether Joss could legally reform Mutant Enemy (contracted to 20th Century Fox), or otherwise get Minear, Espenson, et al, to rejoin him in telling Firefly, is yet another question...

Pragmatically,

zoid

P.S.
...But I'll take Firefly anyway I can get it. A return to television, with the emphasis back on characters, would be the ideal. Action-schmaction. I will personally weep tears of joy the first time I see the cast -- whatever cast -- sit and eat and laugh and share stories around the dinner table. Those were the most magical moments for me. Whatever they thought of each other, how ever they messed up their personal relationships throughout the rest of the episodes, those moments of communion with one another made them a family. My family.

"We'll never make Firefly again, because that was a thing that existed and is now gone," Whedon told the newspaper before Christmas . "And Serenity isn't Firefly, and whatever comes next won't be, either. But I would love to tell more stories of this universe and to hang out with these people on and off for the rest of my career."

My interpretation of this is Firefly is gone. But there could be a new series, set in the 'verse with all the same characters, with a different title, a different tone.

My vote for a title Firefly:Serenity!!!

Yup. Firefly is gone. Forever. It remains in our memory....and on DVD. So while we love Firefly and enjoyed it for what it was, it's gone. Whatever comes next will probably be more like Serenity. I wouldn't be surprised to see a mini-series come before a series to test the waters (like BSG) and I do believe it would be called Serenity. Cause if Joss keeps changing the name of his franchise, he'll eventually run out of appropriate names, right?

Also, great post, ZOID.

Series or Mini-Series, I'm thinking Sci-Fi Channel. Considering that Firefly has well and truly out sold both Stargate and Battlestar Galactica on DVD, it makes all kinds of sense.

As I mentioned in another thread awhile back. Joss has a built in alternative for a Firefly spin-off. Firefly is a class of ship, Serenity is the name of our most loved ship. There could be allot of Firefly transports lying around. Another band of Ex-browncoats, flush from a recent job, maybe they had a little trouble with the get-away and don't want to depend on someone else for transportation see a Firefly and someone says "doesn't Mal and Zoe fly one of those?"

I remember the TV show JAG jumped from NBC to CBS immediately with no delay. I'm sure JAGs early numbers on NBC were poor but that didn't stop someone with vision from picking up the rights to the show. It did quite well on CBS and was a quality show that I enjoyed for years. Here's hoping Firefly can find a way to continue.

That would be another plus, should it get picked up on SciFi: Series on that network typically only run for 3 months then take 3 months off (x2 per year). That leaves time for actors to engage in other projects, rather than being tied up for upwards of 6 months per year.

With that kind of schedule, our BDHs would be able to pursue film careers too, should the opportunity arise. Given their devotion to Joss and to their respective characters, I would expect all the regulars (whose characters are still alive) to return to work on the series.

I'll call it a win... Now, how much longer do we have to wait for the official announcement of a Firefly/Serenity-based miniseries on SciFi? I'm gettin' impatient, already. We're starting to get the leaks that JW and Loni can see it coming back to the small screen; how long 'til V-U start leaking info along the same lines?

Restively,

zoid

P.S.
Alternatively, the miniseries could be aired on NBC, since they're owned by Vivendi-Universal also. Remember, when BSG made its glorious comeback, NBC aired the miniseries that acted as a springboard for its return, as a rerun leading up to the new series' premiere on SciFi. That was only last year, folks. I'm even keeping my fingers crossed that a Firefly-based series could be picked up by NBC, rather than SciFi. Hey, why not dream (or hallucinate) big?

My choice for a title? How about "CSI: Sihnon, SVU"? (...with a tip o' the tam to JW, for the idea.) Synopsis: When the customers get violent with the ladies of this house, it's the johns who wind up in the body bags... Fridays at 8, 7 Central on NBC.

How about Survivor:Serenity.

Then it could air back on F*x. Every week at the end of the show that weeks guest star could fight River one on one, with the looser going out the air lock.

That would garantee the reality show crowd would tune in.
