Well, near enough. Standing in the check out line at the grocery store (Publix), I noticed a display which customers could donate to help Special Olympics. The way it works is that you check off what ever amount of $$ you want to donate on a card, sign it, and give the $$ to the cashier. They then post all the cards along the store windows, and everyone gets to see who's donated, etc. Only instead of my name, I signed cards for Cpt Mal Reynolds and River Tam.

I know it's not the most original thing to do, but I like to have fun w/ stuff like that.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Hey that is great AURaptor! Money gets to them as need it & our BDM & BDHs get the credit & perhaps it gets some attention to the cause.

Nice work!

assuming, of course that anyone actually reads all those little cards, and also assuming that the people who see your card know who Mal and River are.

kudos, regardless

Yeah, point taken. But what's neat is that this store is near a University, and is frequented by many a college age kid, increases the odds of recognition. But hey, it's the thought that counts, some kids get much needed $$, and hopefully the idea spreads from those who read this, etc....

i understand what you're doing, and applaud it, but if you're going to use charity donations to get a little publicity, don't use names from the show:

your target audience are people who have never seen the show, and using names from the show doesn't reach them in any way.

i would just reccomend making donations in the name of "Joss Whedon's Firefly" or "Serenity: the movie"

remember: you're trying to introduce people to the universe who have never been there before, so "Captain Mal" doesn't really get them there. you're promoting the show, not the captain

I was going more for the fictional/ celebrity name recognition, like James T. Kirk. A blatent AD like ' JOSS WHEDON'S FIREFLY seemed a bit to.... forward? But again, point well taken.

well, if it's just for shits & giggles it wouldn't matter what you put, but just from an advertising/propaganda perspective, something like "Firefly is the best show ever" on a donation is much better.

Ok, dammit! I'll dig for a few more $$ and try again. Sheesh. Oh, wait... donating for a good cause, it's ok!

Actually, I think using character names could work to provoke more interest. Say mom and 12 year old are in check out line, and kid says, "Hey, look, River gave a buck!" Then mom says, "River who? Someone in your class?" Kid explains, that River is a character on the show Firefly, gives a brief run down of the series so that now mom is in the loop, along with checker, bagger, and everyone else in line.
