I don't know if this has been posted yet, but in Out of Gas when everyone else leaves on the shuttles, before Jayne leaves he says "I prep'd a suit for you, so when the time comes..."

When what time comes?
Am I crazy, or am I just missing something?
Like a brain?

What happened? He see your face?

I thought he was just referring to that last moment when the air in the ship had been used up.

I think it just means that when the oxygen runs out on the chip, Mal could put on a suit and live a little longer... not that Mal does so...

Here's my Out of Gas question...

How come everyone is freezing on Serenity before the shuttles leave but when the salvage crew comes on board, those baddies are comfortable in T-shirts and tank tops?

They weren't exactly freezing, it's just that not moving around much in 45 degrees or so for hours does make ya want a blanket or two...

They came from a normally-heated ship and really didn't stay long enough to cool off, not to mention the adrenaline pouring through their veins at the excitement of stealing an entire spaceship. They thought they were getting really lucky that day.

As for the comment by Jayne, spacesuits are made to keep a human alive outside the protection of a spaceship. A suit like that has radiation shielding, autonomous heat and air (life support in all its flavors) -- Jayne did what he could to buy Mal just a little more time, were Mal inclined to use it. If the other ship hadn't come along, though, Mal would have simply frozen to death on the bridge, where he was curled up in his blanket to watch the comm.

"Is there any way I'm gonna get out of this with honor and dignity?"

One thing I always wondered about in OOG is why Mal doesn't put on his nice, warm browncoat. He wears it all througout the series, but in an episode where it seems he'd really want to have it on, not so much.

BROWNCOATER

It was colder on Serenity at that point because they had shut everything essential down to conserve energy. Energy being used for something else would drain the oxygen sooner.

That is a part of OoG that I found as compelling as the line " Everbody dies alone." Mal's stoicism facing certain death there alone just makes my heart stop.

I am also struck by Jayne's face and the recognition in his eyes of Mal's bravery facing death when he tells Mal about the suit and Mal declines.
My father was a soldier who fought in two wars and I am always amazed at Mal's (Nathan's) ability to convey that demeanor that I always saw in my Dad when he talked ( not very much though, he didn't like to) about facing life and death situations.

Good writing, good acting.

Because they are Pirates who are Rock hard and can wear T shirts in arctic conditions :D. Or you remember there was a big rush of air that entered Serenity when the airlock door was opened? The atmos. from the Pirate ship presumebly contained warm air as well as Oxygen.

As far as I know, there was nothing running on Serenity except maybe a few emergency lights, so there really wasn't anything to turn off. The only thing between them and absolute 0 was a temperature gradiant that would slowly decrease to 0
