I never would have bet on it but...

I was in a video rental store the other day with a friend, for completely non-Serenity related reasons. While we were checking out, I caught an advert for the movie playing on a tv mounted on the wall.

Taken by surprise, I delightedly and involuntarily cried, "Serenity!"

Now, I am quite shy and rarely voice my opinions to strangers, especially those opinions which might be percieved as 'nerdy.' I just don't have the confidence for it with people I don't know or have just met. This particular person I don't know also happened to be a bit of a looker, which only compounds the problem.

But to my delight, his eyes lit up and in a forced-casual kind of way he said, "Yeah, that was my favorite movie this year."

From there we had an increasingly enthusiastic conversation that contained the line, "Wow, I don't know any browncoats that are girls..." (obviously he doesn't know many).

Long story (kind of) short, we ended up exchanging numbers. Great night.

Anything this awesome ever happen to any of you?

I've had friends tell me about this great movie Serenity!

Then I tell them it was also a great show called Firefly.

Then they wet their pants and rent it.

I wish. I feel like a geek getting my female friends to watch sci-fi shows, but I'm gonna make the effort for Serenity/Firefly because its just too shiny to not risk embarassing myself

Ahh, yes...that "forced-casual" thing is always a dead giveaway... The attempt to reconcile the burning need to gush, gush, gush about the show with the need to maintain some dignity and be cool - as if you're not totally obsessed with the damn thing. The sad part is, half of the reason I want to appear to "be cool" about it, is so that my opinion of it holds more credibility. I am that obsessed.

And is there anything less dignified than two Browncoats lettin' loose?

JUBELLATE - don't feel like a geek for getting the girls to watch. I mean: Mal, Wash, Jayne and Simon - a little something for any lady watching. Personality-wise and looks-wise, whatever floats your boat is probably covered.

Besides, the SF community needs more women! For some reason too many girls avoid it like the plague :(

Yes. Yes there is:

Five hundred browncoats lettin' loose (e.g. at the Flanvention).

But nobody was too worried anout the dignity thing, thankfully.

I don't disagree on any particular point.
