No, it gives me the willies, the things that happen in our interactions with whales. We get them here too (Oregon), beaching themselves on the sand.

About rivers........
She goes to the canal's edge and looks down. A grey condom, drifting like a jellyfish, a lager can half-afloat, and deeper down swirls something she can't identify, swathed in a pale and billowing caul of ragged builder's plastic. She shudders and turns away. ~Wm Gibson
Yeah, the whole 'chuck it in there' theory of how to treat a waterway is what I meant.

In happier news, I found an article last week about singing mice that really tickled me. Alright, let's see if I can make this work...
Beyond Falsetto: Do Mice Sing At Ultrasonic Frequencies?, Science News

Excerpts:
*drat, no photo*

SCIENTIFIC IDOL. Mice string "chirplike" ultrasonic noises (shown graphically in yellow) into song, according to a new report. Holy and Guo

This "mouse song" is comparable in complexity to the sequences of tones that songbirds and some whales make, say Timothy E. Holy and Zhongsheng Guo of Washington University in St. Louis.

Other researchers remain guarded about labeling mouse vocalizations as song. Nevertheless, says neurophysiologist Xiaoqin Wang of Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, the discovery that mice emit richly patterned ultrasonic noises could have important implications for the study of communication.

I knew it, i am sick in the head, oh and I'm totally with sernyty on the whole whale burying thing, it should be buried at sea!

hows this for random sillyness!

due to infinate improbability theory there is a massively small chance that if you throw a pen into the air it will float there, the end of it will turn into mr T's face and it will sing the theme tune of love boat. The chance is hugely small, but there's still a chance!

Work is bad. Slugging is good. In the DC area they have legalized hitch-hiking and call it slugging. It's pretty funny seeing people in suits and ties hitchhiking.

Legalised hitchhiking? It was illegal in America? I mean, I saw the documentary The Hitcher but I didn't realise they'd gone to all the lengths of making it illegal after that.

Still... thumbs out, eh?

In large parts of the US it is. Especially on all of Eisenhowers Thruway System and anywhere near jails. They usually put signs up there though.

I think they only have Frito Pie in Weirdville. Cuz I've never heard of it.

Or maybe it's a Oklahoma thing.

But now you're making me think about it.
Do you crush up the fritos, or leave them big so it's chunky. Or do you smoosh them up to make a crust? I think I need a recipe.

I'm having a harder time than usual focusing on work today because my grampa's having back surgery at noon (9 minutes from now) and I'm worried about him.

CMS, everyone in my house is keeping him in their thoughts today. I hope it all goes smoothly.

As for the pie...keep the fritos whole. place them in the bottom of a casserole dish or baking pan. pour on the chili. add onions or peppers if you like that sort of thing. add cheese, a bit more fritos and chili and bake until melted....then add more cheese.

It's best eaten with a spork in a paper bowl (dump some chips, add chili and cheese and eat). There are those (Texans) that eat it straight from the frito bag. They simply pour the chili into the bag and sprinkle on the cheese.

Actually, I hadn't until 2 weekends ago. It's delicious and I'm going to make it sometime soon. Don't understand why adding macaroni to chili makes it taste better, but some things are better left unquestioned.

Macaroni & cheese is a great idea for dinner! Comfort food, which my grandma will really need. I think I'll make some tonight.

Also: update on grampa. I just got a call that he's in the recovery room. The surgery went okay. First hurdle is over!! yay.

Thanks NOS!

And Annie's is the best boxed man & cheese. It's the only one I ever buy, when I buy it, which is rare. Also, if you make it with plain yogurt instead of milk & butter and add a dash of dijon mustard, it's even better.

But the BEST mac & cheese is my grandmother's. It's amazing.

I remember as a kid. I had boxed mac and cheese at a friends house. Told my papa that I wanted macaroni and cheese. So he made it and made it and made it.
Never ask a frenchman for mac and cheese. You get something very different from Kraft (I'd never heard of Annie's at the time).
Then mum tried to make mac and cheese -- she put potato chips on top; which in my opinion is gross.
I haven't yet found a recipe for mac & cheese that I consider edible other then boxed.

Oh well, my grandmother's mac & cheese is rather simple. Elbow macaroni layered with butter and shredded colby cheese, salt & pepper. Then you pour a can of evaporated milk over it and bake it in the oven till brown around the edges and bubbly.

It's the best there is.
