I discovered the show about 3 weeks ago because the dvd set was on sale at Walmart for $19. Ive never done anything like this before..

Since then ive just fallen in love with the entire world of Firefly. I felt like I had to reach out to you guys. Ive grown attached to each and every character, I finally watched Serenity tonight and was sad to see a few characters...leave us.

Just wanted to say hi to everyone, how many people are registered here? What do I do to become an official "browncoat"

Wheres everyone from?

The box set for 19 dollars?! I hate you so much right now. I think I paid about 50.00. Anyway, I suppose I can't exactly welcome you to the board because I just recently registered as well! I've become very attached to the characters also, moreso than I have in any other work of fiction than I can think of (at least right now). Fairly recently I got through all the episodes and consumed every extra feature I could find on the DVDs, including the commentaries. I just downloaded both the Firefly and Serenity soundtracks and purchased the Serenity visual companion but I need more, MORE!! I need to watch all the episodes again and again so I can further absorb all the character moments or lines I didn't catch or the small details of the ship and multi-cultural worlds that make the universe feel so "lived in" and real! Anyway, sorry for this freakish babbling. Welcome to the board anyway and check out Browncoat Radio!

Woo Hoo! We have another Browncoat!

Welcome Browncoat!

Now a word of caution: You will soon be quoting the 'verse in real life. This is a fact of life, it will happen eventually, you can not escape it.

I don't think there is One Big Browncoat registry. Browncoats are independant, so it makes sense to not be in the files. But if you look around where you live, you might find shindigs being organised and the like. Last shindig I went to, we watched our three favorite episodes and someone brought fresh Bao.

You finally made it. Because you said the magic word. It's what keeps us flying...

Welcome,

I know what you mean. a friend turned me on to the Series. You are now in the middle of something big, just watch what happens next. Every person I know who bought or was given the Series box set has become a fan. Now make sure you show someone else the series and maybe some day we will have a series again...

I just bought my Firefly DVD box set a couple of days ago myself... for $60. But it was worth it, not to mention that I'd been keeping an eye out for it and hadn't been able to find it anywhere else.

I'm only fairly new to the fandom myself (I only just joined this site about half an hour ago too). I discovered Firefly through the movie and immediately fell in love.

Ok, here's the deal, you are one of us. There is no official thing, but since you saw the show, loved the show, and sought us out you are one of us already,

Welcome to the group and please stay.

On the other hand if you want to feel like you earned your title, or you just want to see more of the verse, there is something you can do.

I don't like feeling like a sales guy, but since you're new you might not know, whether or not we ever see our crew again depends on the DVD sales. So if you want more, and I think we all do, you need to get everyone you can to watch and buy the DVDs. Even more so you need to get it so they will do the same, that way it doesn't stop with you, it just spreads outward.

That is all any of us can do, and that is what all of us need to do.

Ok, lecture's over.

We all did. That's what ties us together.

You'll find that the people who had the same experiacne are many and varried, but all of the people here are nice people who will be happy to answer any questions you might have, respond to any theories you have, just say interesting things and do other stuff.

This is a lot like a very large family, and you're a part of it now.

Welcome! I've only been here a short while myself, but I can tell you that I obsessively peruse this board and others, searching for reassurance that I have not lost my freaking mind by falling in love with a tv series and movie. Firefly and Serenity are something unique and special, and they have gotten way under my skin (and thankfully, under most others' here, also!). I (and again, thankfully others here) have *never* had this reaction to any book, movie, tv show, etc. before, so this is a strange and discombobulating place to be for me. And yet, I am truly grateful that I found something worthy of such admiration. It's a beautiful (though frustrating) thing.

What can you do? Try to convert others, buy DVDs, CDs, t-shirts for yourself and others. At least, that's my understanding of the best way to try and get this thing back up and flying again.

I LOVE FIREFLY!!!!

Ain't rightly sure that "discombobulating" be a proper Browncoat-type word. I ain't figurin' you to be an Alliance spy, or such -- but such words are somewhat disconcertin'.

BTW, I done larned to spell and writ from Jayne Cobb.

CRAICBEAN

Nice to know I'm not the only cheap one around here...But, after hearing so many stories, I feel compelled to add mine to the mix.
And now the story goes waaay back to when I was sane...
I was harmlessly watching tv a few months ago (I think it was around July or August) and *BAM* there on screen is this person that I had seen before, but who I remembered was funny. Cute, too. What's this? A new film? Serenity, eh? Wow what a juxtaposition considering the bang-em-up trailer. But I've seen that guy before, and I like action and space, so maybe I'll go see it. You know, if I can find someone to go with me to a scifi flick that may or may not stink.
Fast forward about to the middle of October. Still haven't seen it, but a bit more motivated, because hey, I like a popcorn movie as much as the next girl. I'm talking on the phone to a very good friend of mine from college. We were discussing movies (both of us watch far more than the average bear) and I said something like, "Hey, you know what movie I'd like to see? That one that only shows a trailer every once in a while, maybe you've heard of it, 'Serenity'." I'm telling you, there was dead silence on the line. Then she busts out with the whole story of how she loves Buffy, (which I have yet to see, but is on my Netflix list, thanks to her) and how this movie is based on a show that was cancelled, but that she had already seen the movie twice and loved it both times. She then mentioned this person, Joss Whedon, who created Buffy, Firefly and Angel. (I know, I'm a loser who watches so little tv that it is downright un-American. Hence, the movies...) Anyway, this means nothing to me except that she insisted that I see the show before I watch the movie or else I would miss out on some of the subtleties. Which, of course, are the entire basis for watching a movie more than once. Which I do. Often. It drives my parents crazy. But that's a story for another day. So I put this 'Firefly' show on my Netflix queue (another thing I have this friend to thank for - see what I mean about a really good friend?!) and right away, I'm struck - there's that guy again! (It was Nathan Fillion, by the way. I remembered him from previous escapades on film - I do not know him. Please do not think I am misrepresenting myself.) So I'm waiting, and I mentioned it to a co-worker one day about how I couldn't go see this movie without watching the show first, because my friend made me promise. Well, the next week, she brought in her copy of the show. Actually, I think it was her roommate's. Whatever. Life goes on. I take them home after checking that the film is still in theatres, because by this time, I'm really intrigued. I take the DVDs home. I figured I'd watch the first episode to get the feel of the thing, and then watch the rest on the weekend, and see the movie Sunday night if it was any good. I think it was right around the time that Mal tells Simon that Kaylee's dead and then laughs uproariously with the others in the bridge that I knew I was watching something that was really amazing. I proceeded to watch the rest of that disc before dragging my exhausted self to bed. Friday looms, and I told the girl who lent me the DVDs that I'd been up all night watchign them. All she did was nod. It was right around this time that I looked for the movie to get tickets for Sunday night, when I realized that IT WAS GONE! VANISHED! No trace. Nothing. It had left the theatres in this pathetic bible-belt backwater of cultural illiteracy before I could watch it! They wouldn't recognize the frozen pits of hell that they would be sent to for this because not one of them has ever read Dante. This sucks! I waited, and waited, and now the movie is gone.
Okay, console yourself with the show. It can't continue to be this good. It's probably going to get to a point where it sucks and then, I'll be glad that the movie is gone. Ha! Fat chance. Every episode was better than the last! Grrrr....
Oh wait! Keep reading - if youv'e gotten this far, maybe you can go a little farther. I'm almost done. I promise.
Fate stepped in. Seriously, the moons were in alignment or whatever, and I am flown to DC for an interview in the Northern Virginia area. I find out that my hotel is about a mile from the Tyson's Corner mall, where there is a multiplex. THAT IS STILL PLAYING SERENITY!! So I fly in, check into my hotel, and the night before I am scheduled to interview for a job, I go to dinner with an old friend in the area, and convince him to see Serenity. He knows nothing about it, except that he loves scifi. The movie starts around 10:00 pm, so we know if we do this, it'll be a late night. We watch. It's amazing. It's phenomenal! All of my old friends who I've come to know and love are back in all their glory! Look! There's Wash! And he's got a new haircut..Looks good...Oh, and there's Mal and Zoe and Jayne and River and Simon and Kaylee!!! I am lost in this world and when the credits roll, I'm still feeling the goosebumps. We sit through them and the people who were sitting in front of us turn around and they KNOW that this was the first time for both of us, sitting there, stunned.
It took me until about now to get the show back to my friend. I wouldn't give it back until I bought my own copy. I got Serenity from my grandmother for Christmas. I have bought the DVDs for a friend already, made my sister watch the show, and on Christmas Eve, made my parents watch Serenity. Mom loved it. I've converted my boyfriend and sister to the fold. Both think I'm a bit nuts to be THIS into it, but really, I think they're just jealous. They wish they could be writing a huge long post to a fun website at 1:00 in the afternoon on a Friday because the boss is away.
Really, folks, it's you I must thank more than anyone else for this amazing thing that is the 'Verse. If not for you, I wouldn't ever have mentioned to my friend that I wanted to see this movie, I never would have seen the show, and I never would have been able to share in this incredible adventure. Thank you for haranguing people into making this movie. It changes you. Or at least, it changed me.

So that's my tale. Oh yeah, and the reason why I even wrote this was because of my snooping around here (I know, I've been incognito, but I was also a bit afraid that I would be the only wackadoo around...) that I saw the discs for $19 at WalMart. They officially hate me there. You have to get them online, if the deal is still going on. I bought more than one. There are plenty more heathens right around here.

not at all! i loved reading your post. it made my morning, frankly. i think one of the best things about this and other boards is hearing these discovery stories. yours is especially compelling, because the film left your town, like so many others, too quickly, leaving you in a panic and making you actually have to BOARD A PLANE to go see it elsewhere. that's gotta be a first! i'd never heard of 'firefly' when i went to see 'serenity' in the theater. i liked the trailers precisely for the fact that i recognized abolutely NONE of the actors (except adam baldwin, from 'full metal jacket') and wanted to see a pure sci-fi story unsaddled by the extra baggage that comes with recognized hollywood stars hogging the screen all the time. naturally, the film blew me away. absolutely fantastic. but then i hear on tv somewhere that it's the continuation of a tv series. WHAT!??! amazon confirms. i get the dvd set of the show and, like you, fall in love. gone. and what's this? the show got cancelled?!!? it's at this point that i go through the various stages of loss - anger, denial, etc. and i all but trip over myself getting back to the theater - by now a tiny little screen full of devotees only - to watch the film once more, with new eyes, and a full appreciation for the depth of these characters, these actors, the story, and the fact that it had been cancelled and had not seen the light of day for three long years whilst the creator and a community of browncoats struggled to find it a new home. the opening is ten times more resonant than before. and then up comes the title, then the beautiful ship flying once more, and i lose it. not ashamed to admit it, folks. cried like a hungry, angry baby. and i'm still pretty confident i'm the same sane person i was before i discovered this 'verse. but only just.

so welcome. now you'll have to go through the series and film over and over like the rest of us, looking for subtleties and nuanced reactions that tell far deeper stories than ever thought possible. honestly, the more i watch, dig, study, the more is revealed. it's fantastic.

In regards to the shirt, try the website Cafepress.com...they have tons of shirts, I just got two myself!!

I just signed up on this board myself yesterday, and although I feel like a total dork due to my obsession for this show, it is wonderful to have a "family" like this board, where you can feel at home in your dorkdom! We're in the same boat. Last weekend after recording the marathon that was on SciFi I watched all the shows and then picked up the film. I've never felt this strongly about any TV series, or any sort of fantasy world for that matter. LOTR is about the closest thing to come to it, but Firefly is different. I've always been a big Starwars fan and when they announced the prequels I was so excited. But then they all came out and weren't really what I expected so there's been this big hole since. Firefly seems to have filled it and then some--it's along the vein that the new SW films should have been, but also so much more.

I find myself thinking about the damn show almost every day, even when I'm doing things that are completely unrelated--it's really catching me off guard.

So, you're not alone, you've got 2 new converts along with you (my wife too) up here in MN, USA.

FoundSerenity-

As you start to experience withdrawal, make sure to hang out here. There's all sorts of good stuff! Fan art (mphillips comic strip just starting), fan fiction, the River Tam sessions ( http://www.destinything.com/id149.html), the extended Firefly gagreel (can't remember where I got that), and the "Dead or Alive" script (uh, somewhere).

Book: Oh, it'll be taken into consideration.
Jayne: You made that sound kind of ominous.

Pennsylvania. Northeastern corner -- about a 2 hour drive northwest of NYC.

Put the quotes into the place below where it says "your signature", or else you can go to your profile and make a regular signature.

BTW, I drive a quarter bus (20 passenger max). Have a CDL C, with P and S endorsements. Have to be stinking recertified every four years in PA. Pain in the posterior. Especially for the lousy pay.

Oh, I dunno... I think "discombobulating" makes a might pretty Firefly-type word. Ranks right up there with "addle-pated" in my book! :)

Big welcome to all the (other) noobs to the Firefly 'verse. Only been here a short spell myself (since roundabout July of Ought-Five), but it's a most friendly place. Just be careful where you have your drinks on Unification Day, and you'll be just fine.

BTW, I'm from Austin, TX - not far from Houston. Might have to look into one of them there "shindigs" sometime...

Go to your Profile and enter your quote as a "tag". Then you can use something else as your signature. The tag line will appear under your username.

Welcome (says the guy who signed up yesterday ;) )! Well, welcome to the 'verse, anyway.

I never caught Firefly while it was on TV, but I bought the DVD set sight unseen (for the full 50 bucks) because I heard good things from people I trusted. I put off watching it for a bit, finally popped it in, and fell hopelessly in love with the series and the characters. I've seen that happen to lots of people...a friend of mine who pretty much hasn't liked anything since Season 7 of the X-Files got dragged to go see Serenity by me and a couple others...walking out of the movie he asked to borrow the DVD set. A few weeks later (after going to see Serenity more than even *I* did) he got his own DVD set. It's the first show he's truly loved since X-Files. It's just a well written show with a fantastic cast that has great chemistry together.

Done and done. ;) I've even gotten people on message boards I used to frequent (baseball related, actually, so not sci fi ones) to check out the movie and series.

"ever sailed on a Firefly?"

Lola, go to www.cafepress.com. I also ordered a Tshirt with 'time for some thrilling heroics' and Jayne's goggle on the front. Good quality shirts. I ordered them from UK and they arrived in about 4 days. Might quick operation. The thing is I may need to order more Tshirts because I constantly wear these 2. I wear 1 for 2 days throw it in the wash and then wear the other 1 and it rotates like that over 7 days LOL People think the're the only clothes I have :D

Thanks for the props on "discombobulating." I thought it was a pretty fair Firefly-type word, myself (as is "addle-pated", I agree)!

Glad to see another Texan on here. I'm in Dallas, and from what I can tell, the Browncoat population up here is pretty slim. Is it better in Austin? Assume so, since the Alamo ran the marathon back in, what, August? Very bummed I hadn't discovered Firefly at that point, or I'd have been there. Hope they do another one in the future!

HA! Just wanted to make sure there was no remaining question that I was an Alliance spy. I may not have been a Browncoat for long, but my loyalty is true. I expect to see "discombobluating" in numerous posts from now on. ;-)

Any Floridian Browncoats out there?

By the way, I just adore this site and everyone here. What could be better than watching Firefly and Serenity and then talking to a bunch of fantastic people who love the show just as much as you do?

Love you guys!
