For the past 48 hours... I've been whistling the tune to the "wedding scene" in Our Mrs. Reynolds. I do it everywhere... while driving... while taking a walk by the park... while washing the dishes... I'm even doing it right now while I'm trying to figure out a way to make this thread (very first... probably last --smile)as exciting as I can. If I'm not mistaken ... I might even be whistling it at perfect pitch (doesn't happen a lot by the way). I've always been a believer in the power of music especially when it comes to movies and such. It's a very powerful tool in delivering the kind of emotion the characters are going through as well as inducing the same feeling/mood from the viewers. So... For now it's my favorite Firefly musical scene. What's your's?

Definately the scene in "The Message" when they deliver Tracey's body to his parents. That whole scene, with the snow and the haunting music, is just beautiful.

Oh yeah!!! That scene was just perfectly done. That haunting violin(?)in the background...Kaylee and Simon holding hands... Jayne taking hat off... The look on Mal's face.... Always make me wanna cry. Just perfect.

My favorite would be in Out of Gas when Mal is walking back after everyone leaves the ship.

Yeah, I could just watch that scene over and over again.

I recently got the Serenity soundtrack, and it reinforced my love of the final River scene, where the music begins to swell as she runs out into Reaver hell. The music there is just so beautiful and stimulating all at the same time, and just speak for River while she kicks major butt! I also read in the insert in the soundtrack that the musical creator, David Newman, told Joss Whedon that he had found a piano that was sort of broken, and played in this strange little way, and he used it for River's music because it was like her, beautiful but warped. I just love that description, and her personal music in the movie is just that. If you haven't yet, get the soundtrack! It helps me to study!

I'm not sure if it meets the criteria or not, but when I think of Serenity and music, the ONE thing that pops into my head - and stays, seemingly for days on end - is the Fruity Oaty Bar jingle. And now it's there again... :)

That damned "Fruity Oaty Bar" jingle borrows itself into your brain and won't go away! No wonder it sent River over the edge!

I so agree-I have to stop everything and just listen while Mal closes up Serenity but I find myself humming Hero of Canton so where does that leave me? Just like everything in the verse-complex.

Out of Gas is just a masterpiece from start to finish. Great story... Precise acting...and... It has that haunting music in the background and yes... When Mal was on his way to being by himself in that freezing, oxygen depleted , and lifeless Serenity. Words aren't enough to describe how perfectly executed this whole scene is. No wonder... Watching anything else feels so mediocre compared to our Firefly/Serenity. They don't make stuff like this anymore. Argh!!!!

In "Safe", when River joins the locals in the
festival dance. A moment of real happiness for her.

Mmmm… I LOVE my Firefly soundtrack. You can just feel Greg E’s love for what he was doing. Lot’s of good scenes but one that was very poignant for me was the final scene in the Pilot, “Serenity”. Where Book has pretty much had the day from hell, and is really in a state of despair, and Inara says just the right words to comfort and help bolster his faith. Great lighting, well acted, beautifully shot and music that fit it to a tee. Tears is the track

Damn that’s freaking good TV…

2 scenes always come to mind for me when i think of Firefly/Serenity (other than the Ballad of Serenity):
1st: Ep1, when the ship is rabbitting from the alliance after their crybaby sounds. It's just a 10 second westerny guitar cord with a fiddle ending it. Not much of a country music lover, but that gets me. It reoccurs somewhat often in other episodes.

2nd: The Serenity movie intro to the Serenity itself, especially the 1st 53 secs. Very Classical, sweet & sorrowful. Then it quickly turns to what i think of as a lively high seas pirate theme...until the foreward buffer panel falls off..

I have to skip over that track (Funeral) sometimes when it starts playing, 'cause my eyes water up.

The Message is still my favorite episode... though extremely close to Out of Gas. And the scene at the end just seals it. KF

What happened? He see your face?

My favorite is in OIS when Early is floating from his ship to Serenity. There is this crescendo that builds excitement/danger. I was somewhat disappointed that this portion of the show was not on the FF soundtrack.

The horn in it sounds like an Oboe or maybe some Asian horn. (limited knowledge here)

2nd would be the OOG ship shots.

i have two favourites from the film. firstly as the ship serenity is introduced at the very beginning which i think someone has already mentioned. it sounds like a sea shanty with western undertones which is perfect really, and not at all majestic or grand or futuristic, it describes perfectly the ship and its crew.

also i absolutely love the music at the end of the movie in the montage sequence as the crew patch up serenity and simon and kaylee kiss. its moving in that it shows everyone trying to move forward but also has a sadness to it which gets me everytime.

oh and the accoustic guitar version of the firefly theme that comes at the end of the credits for the film - LOVE IT, and makes me feel like a special browncoat every time i hear it.

Definitely the scene in "Out of Gas" when Mal is closing up the ship. The music is just so haunting, and so perfectly echoes Mal's pain and resignation and determination. It's just beautiful.

I also love the snow scene in "The Message" when they're delivering Tracy's body--particularly after I listened to some commentary and heard that when that scene was done, they all already knew they had been cancelled, and the scene was shot with the idea in mind that they were saying goodbye to the whole cast and crew. Ouch.

MAL: We're still flying.
SIMON: That's not much.
MAL: It's enough.

When they first show the ship in the movie the song that plays is called Serenity and I listen, whistle, hum, sing, and dream it. But I hard up to pick favorites so I also love Prep for flight and love from the soundtrack. Favorites from the show will I told myself I would keep this short to nevermind

That's mine too -
the combined dance with the shoot-out and all the time the fast paced dance music in the background.

Perfection.

I'm also very very partial to the "my turn" scene. I'm belatedly really falling in the love with the opening transition of Serenity, as well; where the music shifts from the swelling cello sounds into the twangier sound as the camera comes up over the bridge and you see Mal and Wash for the first time.

definitely OoG for me.. as Mal is closing the ship.. It is so haunting. I have it on the computer and I loop it.. I really want Greg Edmonson to do a Browncoat Suite... and to elongate the musical pieces so they could be played by a symphony.. Ihave suggested this, and urge you all to do so as well.. can you imagine a Browncoat symphony??? SHINY!!

Second is the funeral in the Message. This man, (GE) is another BDH in my book!!

I love both of these musical introductions of the ship. Does anyone know if the first one (from the pilot ep.) is on the Firefly soundtrack?

One small part I like that hasn't been mentioned yet (I think), is the music that plays towards the begining of Shindig while the crew is walking through the marketplace on Persephone. It's just so...ten in the morning.

But easily my favorite musical moment is the much lauded OoG one. Mal, the blanket, the music - damn.

Sounds like a bass clarinet to me. I frequently see people referring to it as an oboe, but it seems too low pitched and not whiny enough for that.

Yeah, the soaring crescendo as first River's fist slams into that Reaver's face and then we see her unload all kinds of bladed hell on the horde... gets me whoopin' and cheerin' every time!

Also from the BDM, have to make a special mention of what I now think of as 'Wash's Theme' - the piece that plays during Serenity's run through the Alliance fleet, that kicks off after Wash says, "I'm a leaf on the wind... watch how I soar."

And when the reaverized Serenity is flying through Reaver space... spooky and tense.

And the music on Miranda too...

Aargh! Can't pick a favourite. There are so many!

I'm surprised at all of you!!!! The 'peak' Musical moment for me is the Sad little fiddle in the pilot, when Mal figures out that the sound of those ships.... 'arnt his ships. There is a total sense of the opposing forces and loss of hope. You can see the culmination of his struggle on his face... Crushing.
