Hey Philly/PA Browncoats!

I manage an independent movie theater in Philadelphia, PA and also happen to be a major browncoat.

After handing out copies of Serenity to the staff for christmas, I won enough converts to convince the theater owner to book Serenity for two screenings as part of our midnight movie series.

It screens at midnight on Friday Feb. 10th and Sat. Feb 11th. And it's in our 320 seat theater on 35mm.

Our midnight series is a lot of fun AND if Serenity does well, there's a great chance we'll be able to bring it back every year - hopefully to keep the cult status growing...

Go to:

http://www.brynmawrfilm.org

for info and directions - the midnite movies are listed at the bottom of the page. The theater is on Route 30, on the "main line" - a suburban stretch right outside Philadelphia, PA.

I've also been talking to Lisa Lassek, the editor of the
film, about coming and doing a Q&A at the theater (she's from Bryn Mawr originally), although NOT this screening. But if we get a good crowd, it will help convice her to come in the future AND get us another screening!

So please come on out and fill the theater! I can't wait to see the BDM on the big screen again AND get paid for it!

You won't be able to make it? I assumed that attendance is mandatory for at least both of the showings.

Ben --

Email me at ninahattian (at) comcast (dot) net if you need help advertising or anything. I work at CHOP, so I walk past UPenn and Drexel twice a day. Happy to put up flyers or something. Not sure how many folks will make the commute, but you never know...

Nina - for any folks coming from the city, the movie theater is RIGHT next to an R5 stop - literally like 100 feet from the Bryn Mawr R5... the only problem is that the train won't run back when the movie's over...I for one am happy to give some browncoats a ride home to the city (as I live there), but of course I've only got four spots beside myself... but we can prob. rustle up some rides if we try... but getting out there from Drexel is *easy*... just nab the R5 at 30th St... and if you have a car, that makes it all the easier...

oh - and one more addendum: It's only 5 bucks.

and i can be reached at: bhickernell@brynmawrfilm.org if anyone has questions.

hopefully we can get this as a headline here to really get the word out! again, hope to see lots of folks come out - and if anyone has any ideas as to how to make the screening "special" - I'm open to ideas. (No, I can't get Nathan Fillion, but maybe we can hand out some Blue Sun merchandise or something...)

I wouldn't worry about selling out. Theater 1 seats 320 plus change. We usually sell 60-100 for a midnite show. For a Rocky Horror, maybe 150. Even if Browncoats turn out in force, I'd be very surprised if we sold out. That's why if we get even a crowd of 150 or so it'll really impress the theater owners.

Even if we do get 320, then I can move the print over to our other theater, which seats 360 - I might even put it in that theater anyway.

And if we got a miracle crowd of over 360, there's always the option of running it in both theaters simultaneously (there are ways - long story) - so that's almost 700 seats!

It is true only members can get advance tickets (one of the perks of joining our non-profit org), but please don't let that keep anyone from coming! I am *sure* we can get everyone in!

One of the benefits of having a Browncoat run the screening...

You know, this raises a whole new possible way to advance the firefly cause - use the old Rocky Horror Picture Show midnight showing model.

What DOES happen to all those prints once they leave the theares? And what would it take to engineer a coordinated showing on college campuses and midnight movie theatres nationwide?

Just wondering.

I wonder if WHYY-FM -the local National Public Radio affiliate http://www.whyy.org/91FM/ - might be persuaded to make mention of this as part of Arts and Culture reporting or possibly even something like Radio Times. It's an interesting and amusing story: Critically-acclained series cancelled after 11 episodes sells enough DVDs to get a movie made. Critically-acclained movie then flops at the box office but sells enough DVDs to remain at top of Amazon for weeks, pulling the cancelled series DVD along with it. Fans buy multiple copies of DVD to loan to friends and donate to libraries. Local non-profit art house theater plans a midnight showing, but will fans really show up from Indianapolis, Scranton, and Maryland?

well, ok then folks, consider it a challenge.

i'm making arrangements to show the film on both screens simultaneously on 35mm. so that's 700 seats. both nights.

if you guys can fill 'em, please do. i would be very, very pleased.

but please don't stay home folks, i really do think it'll be a long shot to sell out. i *promise* folks who have driven a long way will get to see the movie - even if i have to sit outside with my laptop and the dvd! (we *do* also have a classrom w/ a video projector, so could squeeze another 40 or so in there, but again, i don't think we'll actually sell out... but i'm getting prepared as if we will!!!)

you guys have inspired me into thinking it's possible!

also, we're working on some supplementary things to make the event fun. it's not official yet, but could be soon, that we'll have a pre-party in our theater cafe before the Saturday show (say 10ish) and maybe do some form of firefly quizzo/trivia or firefly impressions (c'mon, who can do a mean operative?) or something along w/ general mingling - and the cafe is byob!

and if that doesn't work out, there's a great bar down the street called "the grog" which'll be open as well for food and drinkies. just bring yer own chopsticks.

i'm working on getting together a few fun prizes for the games and over all it should be a righteous tri-state shindig - but of course, the best part will be the main event - a bunch of folks who love Serenity seeing it on a big screen together.

If aynone has ideas re: fun things to do at the screening, please lemme know.

and please do everyone come out and don't worry about selling out.

and finally, i'm doing my best to do some promotion - thanks for all the emails and suggestions re: ways to get the word out. remember, i'm just one little man with one little ship... err, theater, but i'll do my best!

see ya in the 'verse next weekend!

oh - and if any other folks are planning on coming out, please do post and say how many you're bringing, so we can get a feeling - thanks!

Won't be able to make it, seeing as how I live in another country, but I like your 'midnight movie' policy. Not many theatres still do that. The only one I've been to that does anything like that is the Bloor Cinema in Toronto.

But I'm really impressed by the other movies you have in your line-up. FIGHT CLUB, both versions of DONNIE DARKO, ROCKY HORROR, ETERNAL SUNSHINE, etc. If I were living there, I'd be a regular customer.

You guys should show a bunch of Kevin Smith films. Then you'd REALLY be packed.

one of the great things about being an *independent* theater..

and I -just- realized the Firefly pun.

But seriously, I work in production here in Philly - wrote/directed my first feature last year: www.cellarmovie.com - and why did i pick this as a day job over being someone's assistant in a production office?

b/c i love the theaterical experience and i think the best way to keep it alive is to not let the "mcdonalds" approach choke away the magical experience of seeing a movie w/ an appreciative crowd.

i get *so* tired of multiplexes that bombard you with video games and horrible candy on the way in (and i *like* video games and candy), bombard you with advertising for 30 MINUTES and then have a feature presentation w/ a scratched print, out of focus, skipping sound, kids on cell phones, etc.

the large companies don't care about *movies*. we do. we choose movies we think will expand our audience's perceptions rather than just what'll sell. we focus on good projection and sound and clean, fun theater. we show 2 or 3 trailers before each movie and that's it.

and our popcorn prices are the lowest in town.

are we perfect and is it the perfect day job? no.

but i do think we're doing something positive towards preserving/rescuing the theatrical movie experience.

and i'm proud of that.

but, that being said, working 'till midnight every night has it's disadvantages.

costumes are def great w/ me! am i right in thinking most fan folks are coming sat.? we're thinking of having the party that night and i think that'd be the best night for costumes... but really either night is cool - like i said above (or was that on a different board? yikes!), if folks wear rocky horror costumes and hedwig and the angry inch costumes and, heck, bathrobes for Big Lebowski, than I think Serenity fans'll be in good company w/ some leather and tightpants.

and yes, that's one word now.

the only thing i will say, though, is that i know i'm encouraging first timers to come and likely a lot of other folks will be as well, so i don't wanna scare 'em off... i don't think we'll do a theme song sing along or anything :) - although that doesn't mean i won't sneak it onto the pre show music five minutes before showtime!

i'll let you know if we can do a pre-party friday at the cafe'... but for now sat. might be it...

however, there is a bar/pub (food as well then) right down the street called "The Grog" that could suffice well as a pre-serenity meeting place... it's right on lancaster ave, route 30, just down the street from the theater...

it's a nice little place... maybe a bit busy on fri. night but they have an upstairs that usually has some room.

unless folks are coming who are under 21...

anyway, if demand seems great enough, maybe we can swing a friday night cafe' party as well...

oh, and just to note, the theater is def. *outside* the city - a good 20 min. drive or train from center city philly... just to make that clear to folks...

you said you didn't "know the city well" so wasn't sure exactly what you meant... there are *plenty* of great restaurants i can recommend in the city if you're coming up early enough... and even a decent place or two in bryn mawr...

KAELE

Gorramit!

I missed seeing this in theaters (cash flow problems). I'd LOVE to go. Am speaking to hubby and the 'rents about showing up on Saturday.

Here's a few thoughts:
1) KYW1060am does a Local events/announcements
2) Can e-mail all three network news programs about this, see if any show up as a local highlights thing. Heck, they did for Harry Potter and SW, why not Serenity?
3) Someone mentioned bringing "props"; instead of that, we could look into bringing "fruity oaty bars" and donating them to a local food bank. It'd also be a neat way of gaining a slice more media attention.
4) My fav: Preston and Steve's morning show. They're always out looking for weird stuff to make fun of, and before they were at WMMR, were VERY active in things going on around town. (Prob still are.) Could e-mail them with a heads-up and see if anyone shows.

I'd be willing to do something, just let me know. But I won't do it without permission of the theater. If nothing happens, nothing happens. If something does happen, it'd be worth doing!

Ben, please don't stress over planning another party for Friday. You're doing a lot already, and I shouldn't be greedy.

I've only been to Philly once as an adult, and that was just to go to the zoo. I would love any suggestions you have for restaurants in the city and/or near the theater. Also, how is Philly as far as driving and parking in the city? I live near DC now, so I won't be scared off if you say it's not easy.
