MALFORPRESIDENT

I don't know if anyone will know what I am speaking of here. (I wonder, is this what it feels like to be obssessed?). I was watching a few of my favorite firefly episodes with my wife yesterday (Ariel and objects in space) when I noticed something similar. In "Ariel" River rambles on about someone coming down the chimney and taking away the shiny presents (and some other cryptic dialog about the yule-tide). At first I thought this was River just being River about the boys in blue coming after her. But when I watched "Objects in Space" I noticed that Early says to Kaylee that he may have "come down the chimney to give presents...". Do these things have something in commen, or am I reading to much in to this?

Sounds like Whedon.

Also, in Trash, watch carefully. You'll see Early's ship zoom past when Mal looks out the window.

I didn't notice either of those! Very interesting, and nice catch! Now, I have to go, for I must watch all these episodes and experience it for myself!

I always took it to be relevant to Jayne's betrayal at Ariel(something about not looking in the closet its greedy seemed to be directly aimed at him) but now that you mention it that way I doubt it was coincidence. Nicely done, MalforPresident. You should post the thought over in the episode analysis.
Everytime I see or some else points out things like this I can't help but marvel at how great a show this was and how well written. Damn, I hate fox.

NEVERED

I agree with the first part:

Jayne turned them in, and expected his reward, but it never came; much like them taking the presents away at christmas.

I don't think that river and early using the same source for their metaphores hints at any actual connection or premonition.

Not to mention that being a "reader" does not make River a "precog."

Unless, of course, Jubal was closer than you think to Simon and River on Ariel. How'd he pick up their "scent" there unless he somehow tapped into the transmissions to the "hands of blue" team or had a mole in the Hospital security staff? Remember, River's "reading" capabilities isn't limited to one person at a time but comes in from every direction (that's been inferred more than once in the show). She got a whif of Jubal, just enough to know that he was chasing them.

A wonderful excuse to indulge in specific eps instead of just randomly picking each day and hey, I have to watch ALL THREE of them, just in case I miss something. * she says gleefully!*

Great observation!!! I had never thought of that, although I have always believed that everything River says is extremely important and not just her mind blabbering. I've been able to interperate most of her lines, but some of them still escape me.

Until MalforPresident pointed that inference out I had always thought it pertained specifically to Jayne, but now I believe it was meant for Jubal first and then to Jayne (Don't look in the closet, it's greedy). Most of the lines she says in Ariel escape me.

"We're going backwards...up the down slide." I take that to mean that Simon was going about getting his information the wrong way. He found out that they had stripped her amigdala and he assumed they did that so she could be a better reader, so she could feel everything, when in actuallity they stripped it so she would have "no-conscience" that might hinder her being an Alliance assisin. I'm fairly certain that Jubal Early had a very underdeveloped amigdala.

But I'm still confused about the "Your toes are in the sand"....I kinda expacted her to say "you've got your HEAD in the sand".

Did you know that Maralyn Monroe had webbed feet? That's why you never see a picture of her feet. Even when they did a beach shot...she buried her toes in the sand.

You may have the answer right there... "We're going backwords," "You've got your toes in the sand."

2 possible meanings, the inverse of head in the sand OR possibly using the feet to slow down by draging them in the sand as brakes.

My dad (a lifeguard when he was younger) rescued my sister and her friend from a rip-current off Puerto Rico once by doing that.

He swam out to them, grabbed each one by a foot, held his breath and went down to drag his toes in the bottom during each push of water away from shore. Came up for air and to ride the crest of each incomming wave. They eventualy made it to shore safely. My sister said, it was the only time she ever saw our father cry. He broke down and sobbed once they made it back to shore and he knew everyone was OK. She didn't realise the danger they had really been in till then.

I always thought all of River's ramblings in Ariel were about Jayne specifically. He's a mercenary and the only thing he seems to care about is cashy money.

The references to Christmas and looking into the closet always seemed to be the reason that Jayne is who he is. He was poor and didn't get much as a child, so now everything comes down to money.

I don't think there's a connection between those two lines, but you never know...

Also, don't forget what Mal says when he wakes up at the end of "Out of Gas": Is it Christmas? :)

AERIN

Hmmm, seems Joss likes to link Christmas references with betrayal. River mentions it in Ariel as Jayne turns them in, Mal asks if it's Christmas after YoSaffBrig dopes him in Our Mrs Reynolds, and Jubal mentions presents as he gets Kaylee to betray River's whereabouts. I think the link must be a Joss thing, but I don't get why.

I could believe River mentioning Christmas in reference to both Jayne and Jubal. Jubal found them because Jayne tipped off the Feds on Ariel. I don't think River's abilities have ever been defined, so she could be reading the future (and, she can kill you with her brain, LOL). Or Jubal could have arrived on Ariel just as they were leaving and River could have sensed him more directly. Ah, the worlds of Joss.

Jayne: I once hit a guy in the neck from 500 yards with a bent scope. Don't that count upstairs?
Book: Oh, it'll be taken into consideration.
Jayne: You made that sound kind of ominous.

I think you are reading to much in to it. River cant see the future, she only reads minds.

Dont think there is a connection there.

Jayne: All those years of preacher training, getting knocked out by one bounty hunter
Book: Oh, dont get me wrong. I gave him a hell of a fight
Jayne: Epic i'm guessing

I think that When River tells Jayne "You've got your toes in the sand", she is giving him a warning.

Here's my logic:
a. putting your toes in the sand is a calm, leisurely activity probably reserved only for the rich in the society of this show.
b. Jayne believes he is about to become very rich, a candidate for such an activity
c. River understands peoples' mental states
d. River knows that Jayne is "counting his ducks before they hatch" so to speak.
e. Translation: You've got your toes in the sand - you're counting your ducks before they hatch, you're thinking that you've already got your money in the bag, that you already have what you want, but you've got your head in the clouds, your toes in that sand you want so badly.

I think River knows that Jayne has betrayed them, and she also knows that Jayne will not get his money.
His mind is elsewhere
He's counting on that money
His toes are in the sand

Kaylee is cool

America loves a winner!

I hadn't caught those, but the imagery of Jubal coming down the ladder did sort of remind me of Santa coming down from the chimney. I mean, the shoot to the airlock is sort of chimney like... but yeah, nice catch.
