Thought I'd keep everybody in the loop on the progress of our cookbook and how it's coming along. :)

Big Damn Chefs has about 95 recipes submitted from Browncoats all over the world, and we're looking for more! At the end of this post, I'll list the recipes we have so far, so you can get an idea of what sort of recipes we could still be in need of.

We'll be soliciting recipes from our Big Damn Heroes, as well! So the plan is that you'll be seeing recipes from Nathan, Gina, Adam, Alan, Jewel, Morena, Summer, Sean, Ron, Joss, Tim, Shawna, Greg, etc, in the book, too!!

As the title of this post suggests, profits from the sale of this book will be going toward charity. The current leader is Equality Now, but other organizations (especially those whose aim is aiding the hungry) will certainly be considered. So if you would like to suggest a good international cause, please feel free to do so.

Coming soon will also be the details of the cover art contest! The grand prize will be, of course, that your artwork will be used on the cover, and a copy of the book (which, if we're lucky, we might be able to get some autographs in). Runner up prizes are in the works, too. We'll also be needing some black and white illustrations for the inside of the book - it would be great if we had some Firefly/Serenity-cooking themed illos from our own Browncoats!

To submit recipes send them to me at fashionablybrown at comcast dot net. Please include:

* board user name
* any other name you'd like to appear (real name is fine, too!)
* the area in which you live (to show the diversity of our community)
* the recipe, including any comments/notes about it (to personalize it)

If the recipe is from a book, please re-write the directions in your own words. We cannot accept recipes which are not yours which have not been re-written (such as Nathan Fillion's Bean Dip recipe which was published in Lux Lucre's Browncoat Guidebook) and which we do not have permission to publish.

So how does one contribute to the recipe collection?

Folks have asked about when the deadline for submissions is...

Well, as I'm asking our BDHes for submissions, I need to give them some time to get them in. Right now, consider the due date "sometime." :) I hope to get the book out for the summer at the latest.

We're going to be keeping the number of pages of the book under 200, to keep the price reasonable. In cases where there are multiple submissions from an individual, I might need to choose between their submissions to decide which one(s) to include.

Cookbook update! :)

Not only will BigDamnChefs.com be up and running very soon, but we also now have two Firefly crew members on board with us!

* Firefly costume designer Shawna Trpcic - which many of you will know from the costume auctions in the last few months - has said she has killer recipes for both chili and fudge that she's eager to share with her Browncoats.
* And creator of the music of Firefly that we all love so well, Greg Edmonson, says he's gonna put on his creative toque and that the project looks like lots of fun!

I can't wait to see what these two creative folks come up with. :)

Looks like we're a wee bit light on the veggie recipes, so I sent in one for YoSafBridge Rice (saffron rice in real life).

ok, so, a little backstory. 3 months now, me and a buddy have watched firefly or serenity almost every night. my girlfriend hates that. she doesnt hate the show, she likes it, shes just not a brown coat. shes also a vegetarian. so, what i do is, before my friend comes over i make her a vegetarian dish, so she cant get too mad. "you wanna be mad, but i made you food, very good food...". it works. now, ive been coming to fireflyfans.net for only a couple weeks in dire need to hear somem news of new shows. today i just stumbled upon this. and i notice you have little for veggie/vegetarian dishes. ill help. ive got a bunch. is there a limit on how many recipes to add?

AWESOME! I was thinking of trying to whip up an Ice Planet for the next Philly screening....my best guess at a practical yet tasty facsimile was a popcorn ball covered in white chocolate, I'm interested to see another take on it!

How many recipes we'll be able to publish from each person depends on how many we get overall. I hope to publish at least one from each person, of course. :) If we have too many, I'll have to choose between multiple entries from individuals, but that's not necessarily a bad thing - it could be easier to fill a needed niche that way. :) And yes, veggies are needed!!

FORGOTN

As for Ice Planets. if you were to scoop sherbert into largish globes and then hard freeze it you might come out with something truer to the verse. Just use a spade (as opposed to a scoop) to make your sherbert spheres around the knotted end of a length of clean, non-toxic cord. lay them in an ice chest with dry ice till hard then tie the opposite end of the cord around a length of dowel rod and enjoy. Just remember to eat them outside.

The cookbook now has an Editorial Staff! Also, in order to take care of the business side of operations - financial and legal - for the cookbook, it was necessary to create a separate and legal non-profit organization. The name of the organization is the Browncoat Relief Corps (also known as the BRC). More information about the Editorial Board and the non-profit available on the "About BDC" page on the website. We've also received submissions from prominent Browncoats such as Cedric of the Bedlam Bards ( http://www.bedlambards.com/Browncoats.html), and Michelle Dockery of Escape Key, the creator of the popular FireFilk piece known as "Mal's Song" ( http://www.cyphertext.net/escapekey/Mal.txt)

More exiting news! Browncoat friend Edd Vick, publisher of Mu Press ( http://mupress.com/index.html), has generously donated an ISBN number to the project! That saves the BDC about $100 and a lot of work. Thanks so much, Edd! Having an ISBN means that eventually Big Damn Chefs might be available commercially through distributors such as Amazon.com or in bookstores. We will still need to purchase a bar code, but having the ISBN number makes the process much easier, already.

Also, the first of the prizes for the cover contest recently arrived - a "Serenity Bank Heist Money Display" from the Propstore of London.

Okay I can't cook worth a spoiled can of beans but my significant other can. I would love to purchase a copy for him although he's not a Browncoat on my level he would still be thrilled. At least I hope so. So would you let us know how to buy it when it's done? I'm sure you will but just in case I have to go somewhere and researve a copy or something let me know.

Folks have asked about being notified when the cookbook is available. There is an announcement-only email list at YahooGroups that will be sending out cookbook updates (probably no more than a couple a month) to subscribers.

But most importantly, it's also where you can go to hear it soonest when the cookbook is available! :)

Join the list at:
