I read on browncoatevents.com that Serenity is going to be one of the first ten films released on the HD-DVD format. Can anyone confirm this? Also, does anyone have any other thoughts about this. What does this mean for Firefly's future, is this a vote of confidence from the studio?

SNAP

This could be a huge boost to the sales if so. Those first HD-DVDs will get bought up by the early adopters of HD TV's.

It is going to be in the first round of HD-DVDs but that doesn't mean the studios have faith in the series...it means they have a low risk of releasing their master copies of what they consider their non-blockbuster movies. The HD-DVD and BD release lists are pretty pathetic and its definitely apparent that none of the studios are sure of the success of the formats. Its actually rather ridiculous that they can't decide on a format and I for one won't accept either of them until there is a clear winner. Making the consumer purchase both formats is just shameful and I honestly don't think it will be well received until one is singled out.

Yeah, I really want Serenity in HD, and I could afford to jump early -- but I've decided it doesn't make sense to do that and quite possibly get stuck with the next Betamax.

Standard DVD quality will be fine until this all shakes out.

I don't disagree on any particular point.

I take it this HD-DVD won't be playable in a standard DVD player, then? 'Cause if it plays at all, then I just have to get it anyway to own all versions...

There is a pretty nice list of "good" movies. As you can see, Serenity is on the list but there is no release date as of yet. I did read somewhere else it will be March, but there has been no announcement as of yet, so I will say it is after May.

no...this is a new High Definition DVD format...you will need a specific (and expensive) player to playback the movie in High Definition
