Its sad to see Serenity sliding a bit on Amazon as it has been performing gloriously, but like a leaf on the wind I'm sure it will be back up.
Question: Has there been any dollar figures posted anywhere on what these sales mean? Does being number one on Amazon mean your moving 1000 a week or a 100,000 a week? It kicked Jedi ass all over the place so it must mean millions, but how many? How much closer has this gotten us to the goal? Are execs paying attention?

I bought DVD sets (well I call them sets with both the Firefly and Serenity DVD's) all around for Xmas and am now able to get a few more.
Question: Is it better to just get Serenity DVD's at this point as opposed to Firefly DVD's as the bean counters will be looking harder at Serenity?

I also noticed someone had mentioned in a thread a while back about running out of people to give the DVD's to. As I am kind of in this situation myself but I was thinking that if you had a few extra perhaps local radio stations might take them as they are always looking for stuff to give away - plus it would get them mentioning the name over the air. "Caller 6 wins a copy of the awesome sci-fi adventure Serenity" or some such.

just my ramblings

Magnum,

That is a great idea! I hadn't thought of that one! Other ideas are to donate to your local library and even a local college library.

I am giving Serenity to all my kids friends for their birthdays this year, they are all teens and twentysomethings so they will like it and I'll bet some of them become fans!

I have plans to give boxed sets of Firefly and/or Serenity as gifts every month this year. Got lots of friends and family and they have to have something for their special occasion.

On IMDB there is a United States rental Top 50. Serenity is currently number 44. They made $770,000 this week and a total of $7,010,000 so far. Since they pretty much broke even in the box office, these rentals, overseas rentals, and the DVD sales profits are all profit. All of this should add up to some major dollar amounts. Unfortunately, I can't find dollar amounts for the DVD sales anywhere. Through Sci-Fi's poll and them re-airing Firefly, I'm thinking we may have a pretty good shot at this. If the show gets good ratings during the March 10th marathon it will only solidify our chances even more.

Amazon.com is probably the biggest pusher of internet sales but when compared to the stores it is very, very little.

I think to have a better grap of the DVD sales you have to look at the actual charts anf Serenity didn't do as well as it did on Amazon.com. In fact it never made it to 1st place and fell quickly off the charts though it did receive a spike in sales in the last period I'm pretty sure it'll be lower than expected next period.

Serenity is selling great online but in the box stores it isn't doing as well. In fact most stores I've been to in my area (Wal-Mart, Target, K-Mart) do not sell Serenity anymore.

I'm afraid to say that the numbers for Serenity will be pretty low and I believe more sets of Firefly have been sold than DVDs of Serenity.

But if we keep pushing like we have with Firefly then we'll keep Serenity selling.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

It may have broke even for production costs but there are a few factors you're not considering. The theatre take, marketing costs, and distribution costs. So marketing we know is about 10 million and we don't if distribution was counted in the marketing costs but if it isn't that's another couple million there and then you have to figure that the theatres took about a quarter of the box office profits. So right now, we're probably just breaking even with DVD sales and DVD rentals.

I could stand to hear a little more. :) Good thinking!

As for the Serenity DVD sales at Amazon sliding off a bit, that ain't my worry. :) No, really. Germany and England, not to mention Australia, with their shiny new twin tin disc set (now, say that ten times fast, lol), have recently released Serenity in their respective countries. So, I reckon this just means people are buying it at their local stores.

I believe there is still hope. :)

(And as I say this, I hear this convo in my head:)

Tracey: When you can't hope, you cope. ... And when you can't cope, when you can't do that ...
Zoe: You find hope for hope.

Hmm, now it is I who's rambling. :)

I find it interesting that the online rankings have been consistantly better than the rankings from the stores - if the stores don't stock it on their shelves then it stands to reason that they can't sell any and, therefore, the sales figures are going to be lower than the online vendors.

Or maybe Amazon just has a different demographic to Wal-Mart and Target.

My apologies. On IMDB it just says the budget equals $40 million, whereas other sites actually say production cost.

Often when I went to Walmart and Best Buy, Serenity was sold out (especially just after it came out), so I'm guessing that not everyone that wanted to have it was able to buy it at a store. Clearly there was some supply and demand issue there, where there was enough demand but not enough supply, so that could be a factor as to why retailers have lower sales figures for Serenity than Amazon.
