Get "Buffy," "Angel" and "Firefly" creator Joss Whedon on the phone and have him whip up one of his patented, obsessively loved cult dramas. Cowboys in space, vampire detectives, superhero gals -- whatever. But making Whedon the cornerstone of this night would be a smart move (and in this iTunes-oriented and DVD-crazed age, there’s no doubt The CW would make a mint from ancillary sales of any Whedon drama).

It would make sense to pair up Whedon’s new show with the critically acclaimed “Veronica Mars” (which Whedon adores and has guested on). The downside: My head might explode from sheer joy.

While it would be cool to have Whedon back on the air (Firefly or not) this lady has about all the credibility of the guy at the local Seven-Eleven discussing TV line-ups.

I particularly enjoyed the part where she suggests giving the slot on Thursday night that would compete with "My Name Is Earl" or "The Office" to the creative people behind "My Name Is Earl" and "The Office." Yeah, THAT makes sense...

I would be very surprised if Firefly finds it's way to the CW network. What the person is suggesting is that Whedon should cook up a new show for CW not one of his old shows.

Anyways a lot has to happen in order for any Firefly/Serenity reincarnation to come to the CW network. First Universal has to pass on more movies and allow it be made into a new show. Then either 20th Century Fox has to make more episodes or sell the rights to another production company. Then the CW could try to pick up but even then there are still a lot of factors involved. Chances of it happening are worse than Unviersal making another movie or Fox picking the series back up or even the Firefly Season 2 project.

That's only a rumor. Someone heard it from a friend kind of deal. We shouldn't take much stock in that. Just as much as this article is an editorial not a news piece.

Reported by who? A secret agent who popped out of a refuse bin? Or was it the ultimate browncoat sitting there in a tree 24/7?

From what I've heard about her, she's either wrong or is extremely behind the pack with spoilers/news. So, I'll take this with a grain of salt, until there is a comment from the actors or Whedon himself...or a production company exec...or anyone else for that matter who is more credible. ;)

Unfortunately, this is how incorrect rumors get started. It's pretty simple: wait to see if there's official word of any kind. The "evidence" we have so far is laughable: an unsubstantiated rumor and some lady's "wish list."

Some old comedian, I think it was Bob Saget, had a joke that went something like this: "I read that men can breast feed. I wrote it down, and then I read it." That's what this reminds me of at this point.

I would absolutely love it but, I can't see Joss involving himself with anything Warner Bros. owned ever again. And WB owns half of the new CW network.

Just wondering, what makes you say that?
I don't think Joss is the type to let bad blood ruin his chance to continue telling stories from the 'verse that he loves so much, and that we love so much, at that. KF

Why would Joss be against WB?

Anyway, as much as I'd love love love this to be true, there's a rather big practical thing in the way. The CW is a product of two other networks. This means that they have to combine the programming of two whole networks into one.

How much room do you think they're likely to have for a show produced by another media company? Would they even want to?

I hope but I am not hopeful.

I love how everytime something like this comes up we suddenly have a abundance of posts from "experts" who claim to know exactly how TV/Film licensing works. Everyone's an expert these days.

But still, it's hard to get too cranky. In the end it really doesn't matter who says what over the internet. I can't tell you the number of people who said a Firefly movie would never happen... for largely the same licensing issues you mention. Yet, here I am with the DVD in my hand. Perhaps as the site fan site said, they've "Done the Impossible". No reason to doubt that they might just do it again.

Well I work in the industry. I'm not sure if that makes me an "expert" but I do have an idea as to how things work. I'm just giving my opinion. Firefly/Serenity franchise would be a big, expensive risk for a new network and Universal and Fox would have to pass on it first. There are a lot of factors involved and a lot of things have to go right before this would happen. I'm not saying it is impossible. I would just be surprised if it would happen like this. I think there is a better chance for a movie or Fox picking it back up or Sci-Fi picking up before CW would be possibility.

Oh, and play Cantr II at www.cantr.net.

While you're probably right, this "laughable" evidence is still better than none which is all we've had up until this point. I say we should rejoice in the possibility. It's better to have some hope (even if it's false hope) every now and again than to just sit back and think this great show is dead.

I think we should all sit back and let things unfold as they may. While I know most of you are trying to help, constantly bashing our hopes doesn't do anyone any good. I don't think anyone here is taking these rumors as the word of god... there's no need to point out the obvious.

With love to all involved in this discussion:

"Truthiness is the state or condition of a person purporting to know something emotionally or instinctively, without regard to evidence or to what the person might conclude from intellectual examination. The term was popularized by Stephen Colbert after he used it during the first episode of his satirical television program The Colbert Report, as the subject of a feature called The Wørd. The comedian defined "truthiness" as truth that wouldn't stand to be held back by facts."

I do not claim to be an expert on network television either. And of course we should not put much stock in anything until we hear some offical word from credible sources.

However, I think there is another way of looking at this. First off, this CW as a fledgling network will probably not be producing any shows in house. They will most likely do the same thing the WB and UPN did. They purchase shows from other production houses.

Now, 20th century fox produced both Buffy and Angel and sold them to the WB and UPN. Universal owns the movie rights but Fox still holds the tv rights. And Fox was opened minded to the idea of Firefly finding a new network home as a tv show when it was canceled. Maybe they're still open minded to the prospect. They would simply produce Firefly and sell it to the CW just like they did with Buffy and Angel.

As for the CW, if they follow the usual pattern of a startup network they will start in the big urban markets first. Which means their target audiences will be sci-fi geeks and minorites.
And what they would want more than anything is to start things up with something that already has some name recognition (something we have been tireless in trying to create). That's why the UPN kicked off with Voyager. Also, I would imagine that the Serenity set is still intake and in storage somewhere. Which would be a big savings in terms of intial production costs.

It would be unheard of for something like this to happen. But then, having our show turned into a movie was considered impossible too. So who knows? We live in a verse of infinite possibility.

Back to the subject of this article...

I can't believe how many people commented about them doing Firefly. Were they all from here?

I saw McCallen there as well as myself. What'd we do, flood the board? LOL

I don't know the likelihood of this being the medium for Firefly to come back, but it would be damn shiny. All the comments about 'the trilogy' and all, I would much rather have it on the small screen. Sorry, 22 episodes vs. a 2 1/4 hour movie? No contest.

As it was, we lost alot of the character development of some of our crew. I just re-watched the movie again and Wash's part was pretty much reduced to quips here and there. Book wasn't even on the ship anymore. The movie mostly focused on Mal and River. Not that there's anything wrong with that, it was the flow of the movie. I believe even Joss said the same thing, especially about Inara.

TV lets you get more in-depth with each character. It's tough to do with a cast as large as 9, and heck, even with a cast of 7! But most episodes seemed fairly well balanced with at least Zoe, Jayne, Inara, Book and Simon getting their fair share of face time. I just like learning about the character's quirks and their backround (and since the series was so short we really didn't!).

...Don't mind me. It's late and I'm rambling... *snore*

Can this network afford Firefly? I know it'll have the combined resources of both WB and UPN but that's still pretty pathetic.
