I've enjoyed reading the newbie threads here and elsewhere. But, they're always from people who saw Serenity in the movie theater or who saw the Sci-Fi broadcasts. Where are the people who took a chance on a rental and got hooked? There have been over eight million dollars in rentals, which translates to about two million actual rentals and probably at minimum three million viewers. I doubt that most of them had already seen the movie, so shouldn't we be getting testimonials from them? (Okay, the thread on this page from the newbie in Germany is from a renter. But that's the first I've seen.)

I figure that the main way we'll get new recruits now is from rentals or Netflix, since most Browncoats have already done most of their recruiting. So, where are they?

I rented the movie the weekend after it came out. And watched it three times in a row! The second time I watched it with Joss' audio commentary, and that really got me hooked. Instant browncoat. I took it back to the video store and bought a copy, then I bought the series on Amazon. Watched that. Watched that again. Watched the movie again. Showed my friends. Got some of them hooked. Found this site, and the rest, as they say, is history.

I usually don't see movies in the theater either because I'm busy at school or at home and the theater is 30 minutes away. I was waiting for the Serenity DVD to come out because I wanted to see if all the buzz about it and Firefly was justified. So I rented it the Tuesday it came out, watched it and loved it.

The next day I went on Amazon, bought Serenity and Firefly (sort of a late Christmas present to myself) and when Serenity came, watched it with my dad once and with my friends another time. I'm several episodes in with my dad and sister now, and my friends loved the movie, but haven't had time to watch Firefly. Still wish Fox would have done a better job advertising the show so I could have gotten in on the ground floor...oh well, better late than never I guess.

Er, I got hooked via a Netflix Firefly rental (pre-movie though) does that count?

Step 1: Wasn't aware of the show when it was on the air (good job Fox!)
Step 2: Friend who lives across the country recommends Firefly every time we talk. I ignore him for six months.
Step 3: Can't find anything I want to rent on Netflix. Reluctantly add Firefly disk 1 to my queue. A western in space? WTF?
Step 4: Watch the battle scene at the beginning of the pilot. Seems like the beginning of every bad Sci-Fi movie I've ever seen. Turn it off.
Step 5: Raining out and I'm bored. Watch the rest of the pilot. Watch the rest of the disk. Re-watch the pilot. Re-watch the rest of the disk. Watch the episodes with commentary. Find the DVD set on Amazon. Go out and buy it for twice the price locally, so I don't have to wait two days...

I'm a rental convert. Rented "Serenity" and knew immediately that I had to have some more. Rented Disc 1 of "Firefly" and after watching the "Serenity" pilot pretty much said "Screw the rentals--I'm buying it all!" Now, after buying all the DVDs, multiple tshirts, the visual companion guide, and comic books, I'm more in love with the 'verse than ever. Were it not for this site and the Browncoats board, I'd be seriously questioning my sanity.

So .... rentals are good foreplay, basically. Now I need some more Firefly/Serenity to grow old with.

MAL: We're still flying.
SIMON: That's not much.
MAL: It's enough.

LOL - my eyes are all teary from laughing. Well done I know just how you feel about the 'verse.
The only animated conversations I have these days are about Firefly and all the associated 'verse.
Glad you found it. Mim on the Rim in Aus
