First of all, I have been a Firefly fan from the time the first trailer for the first tv spot came on the air. I seen all the episodes shown on tv and died when they cancelled the show. I have been on this website for a very long time but this is my first post.
I had a thought the other day (as crappy as this sounds) would the movie have been bigger if the actors were very big names? I know that it would of pissed off all browncoats everywhere, and I know Mr.Whedon would never of done it, but if the actors were huge, would the movie have been done better at the box office?
Here are my thoughts on who could of played the cast...remember please I love every one from Firefly and would never replace them, and it is just my opinion, but here goes.

Mal-----Brad Pitt
Wash----Steve Zahn
Zoe-----Cameron Diaz
Inara---Halle Berry
Kaylee--Alyson Hannigan
Shepherd-Ewan Mcgregor
River---Jessica Alba
Simon---Hayden Christensen
Jayne---Colin Ferrell

Of course movies with big actors do better

IF SERENITY HAD THAT CAST, I WOULD GO BACK TO STAR TREK

aside from Alyson Hannigan, there's no talent on that list. Just 'known' folk. Sorry, I'll take my BDHs everyday. Everyday.

Well, it would have cost a heck of alot more, and there were plenty of 'big name' movies out at that time that had a poor showing at the BO. So, no, I don't think it would have done better, relatively speaking.

How do u get Cameron Diaz as a tough war veteran? Actually I can't see any of those actors being able to pull those characters off. I get what you're saying about big names, but those particular big name actors for those roles?

Anyways, if they had gotten big name actors instead of our original BDHs, sure they probably would have had more people watch it, but I wouldn't have been one of them.(Man, that was a long sentence)

Jessica Alba as River??? Only if River switches from dresses to bikinis and goes from being crazy to retarded.

I know some of them would probably suck, and It is late while I am typing this, so I have not put alot of quality time into this.
Please put your suggestions up, I would like to see what other people would like to see in other actors.

Off the top of my head:

Zoe - Angela Bassett
Shephard - Morgan Freeman
River - Angelina Jolie (I know, but hey, she won an oscar playing a crazy person)

Can't think of anybody right now for the rest of the crew.

And I have to correct myself on my previous statement, I can actually see Alyson Hannigan as Kaylee. (not that I would want to)

...no. I'm sorry, I don't mean to be rude, but I cringed at every name on that list. Ewan McGreggor is the only actual actor on there, and he couldn't pull off Book. I certainly think it would have done much better in the box officie, sure, but it wouldn't have been FIREFLY. He'll it would've have even been good.

Unfortunately, artistic integrety comes at the cost of big numbers and sequels.

Scary thought.

Book has to be the all-purpose Neeson Mentor. No logic to it. Just a standard clause in every contract he has.

Ewan McGregor is a possibility. He can actually act. Unfortunately being in Star Wars will have ruined his repootation. Ask Niska. He'll explain how important it is. Politely.

I like Tom Cruise, Orlando Bloom and Sylvester Stallone as Jayne. Ticks all the Hollywood "They're only fans, it doesn't matter" boxes. (Not tall enough / you can bolt guns to Zimmer frames / Was a real badass in a great film once, and I'm sure a long blond wig would be fine.)

Kaylee and Zoe are irreplaceable. Nobody else could approach tough cool without looking ridiculous. Nobody else could be that sweet without you reachin' for some class of clubbin' implement.

Inara. Nope. Real film star, and extremely attractive. Some considerable distance beyond just pretty. Last time I saw anyone I just plain liked so much, I married her.

Mal. Same thing. Last time I saw anyone I just plain liked so much who was a bloke, I kept damn quiet about it...

Sacrilege; of the sacrilegious kind.

Ya know, I was gonna lay this whole routine on you, how FireFly is River Tam; already had the whole thing done. It involved several wobbly-headed geisha dolls (don't ask) and, I have to admit, an occasional stray chicken. :)

But the truth really is, none of the cast can be replaced. Remove one of the crew, and you diminish the whole. Yes, I love my captain; and cheerful Kaylee; and Simon, noble as a grape; and Jayne, the full-muscular big guy, who can make ya laugh about nuttin' and scares the women; and Wash, the man who plays with dinosaurs, and has a wife that can kill him with her pinky.

Truly, with your cast, I dunno, ... I would probably have a life now, I guess. :) But a barren one. The current cast, they're all on my crew. Why we're still talkin' about this?

N.B. Of course, you understand, if there's a brain-missing executive out there who actually DOES, for a future series, decide to replace Summer Glau, then, well, the first thing he'd hear from me, would be: "Are you familiar with the works of Shan Yu?"

I understand what you're getting at, and that you are not trying to "Replace" the cast (despite some here getting fairly annoyed at the mere suggestion, hypothetical or otherwise)
But, I don't entirely agree with your picks.

However, having said that, I think Steve Zahn is a stroke of genius - I could so see him playing Wash
But then again, Alan Tudyk is a fairly popular movie star in his own right, I would have thought at least on par with Zahn in the name department

Anyway, here are my suggestions (they're probably just as wrong, and I'm making this up as I go along)

Mal: Christian Bale
Wash: Steve Zahn (can't better yours)
Zoe: I reluctantly say Halle Berry (but I know thats an awful choice)
Jayne: Benicio Del Toro
Simon: Jake Gyllenhaal
River: Kate Beckinsale (or Maggie Gyllenhaal to go along with her RL sibling, not sure about her fight sequences though)
Shepherd: Morgan Freeman (can't remember who suggested that originally, but its too good to ignore)
Kaylee: Kate Bosworth
Inara: Carla Gugino

Serenity: The Millennium Falcon

(Ok, that last part was a joke intended to offend. Please don't kill me)

Btw, these are all picks of actors from the most popular movies of the last year or two. They're what you might say are the "in thing", but there are better actors out there that could play them

Of course, no one could replace the cast we got

I did not post this to piss people off...all I did was post my thoughts on a topic like everyone else does, they have an opinion on a subject.
I have been a fan of Firefly since day one of the first trailer of the series debut.
I know that no actor in the verse could replace any single one of the cast of the show.
This is the the first time I have posted on this site since It it opened and well I am pretty upset at all the negative feelings I am getting towards me about posting my opinion. I think because we are all die hard fans of the show it is hard to see any actors in the roles except the ones it. All I was doing was wondering who would make a big splash and make a good Mal and so forth.
I will cower into my corner and never speak again.
Please delete this post and I will never speak again. Thank you for making me feel so welcome.

woah cioccolata, no need to cower

Granted you did get some hasty, and not so appreciative, replies from some, but no need to run off

I know some can be pretty strong in their opinions, so much so that they presume a criticism of something they like is a criticism of themselves. And even when the series/movie is not being slated directly, some can be very protective of their "heroes"

Slightly odd how far some will go to put people in their place (and that's not directed at anyone in particular here) but I suppose thats what happens in fandom. The fact that there have been many trolls who post with the only intention of offending others or getting them riled up doesnt help

If you look around, there are plenty of nice folks here, and if you do feel that some are being unnecessarily harsh, then you can either apologise or ignore their comments (or both), just don't think that the replies of a few is indicative of us all and the forum as a whole.

And at the end of the day, even if you don't post, you can always visit the Blue Sun Room, there's plenty of art/fiction there

Actually, I don't start that many threads myself, but linger mostly in the threads of Destiny - where we write our own little adventures for the crew of a Firefly ship

Hey Cioccolata,

I'm sorry you are hurtin'; and I'm sorry, also, if my post contributed to that. Actually, I was just kinda trying to have a sense of humor about it; but I guess it didn't fan out all that well. :( So much for writing skills.

For what it's worth, though, I truly took your idea seriously; but, after short consideration, I just realized that the proposition itself is just too, well, unworkable. It's like asking whether the Mona Lisa would be a better painting with, say, Jessica Alba in it. :) I mean, a FireFly cast that's not the FireFly cast, well, that just's not FireFly. It would be, well, exactly what you said: just a big movie with some big actors. Probably would have done well, at the box office; but it would have left no magic trail. And it would, I think, not have left any of us spell-bound by it.

As for the rest, let's not do the whole cowering thingy, ok? :) I have a better idea. Let's just pretend you're River, and that you thought we didn't want you here. But you couldn't make yourself leave. So you melted... Melted away. We didn't know you could do that, but you did. :) And that then, in the next scene, you surprise us all, and appear to just have fiendishly clever stowed yourself away; and there you are again, and we all say: "I can win this!" Yeah, I think I like that ending a lot better. :)

Let's shoot for that! ... Or we could talk more. :)

Cioccolata: No need to get offended. Some folk just didn't understand (or they understood, but they didn't comprehend) that your post was purely a hypothetical, for-fun-only kind of thing.

You and we all realize that this crew IS the right crew for Serenity. "We will keep this crew, and we will call it... this crew." But you're also right - bigger names would've undoubtedly made for bigger box office. But not for a better movie. Chances are, it would've been a much WORSE movie if Joss had just decided to plug in the hot name of the week.

Blasphemous as it sounds, I can actually picture Morgan Freeman as Shepherd Book, and Angela Basset as Zoe. I might suggest Seth Green as a suitable Wash replacement, but their demeanors are so similar (Wash and Oz) that that might be just a knee-jerk reaction on my part.

If we're just looking for hot names to fill in the blanks, why not get TRULY offensive?

Jennifer Lopez as Zoe
Jennifer Garner as Inara
Britney Spears as Kaylee
Lindsay Lohan as River
Ben Affleck as Mal (Hey, he's got weird relationships with Zoe AND Inara, both on the show and IRL!)
Owen Wilson as Wash
Chris Rock as Book
Bruce Willis as Jayne
Tom Cruise as Simon

Sounds horrible, doesn't it? But it sure would bring in the viewers...

On second thought, I'm glad we have the crew we have.

Youre all right...there is no way in the verse that any actor on this or any other planet who could make the movie any better than it is. All the actors in firefly are what make the characters so loveable and keep us coming back for more.
I have decided to not cower into any corner, but just watch the threads and comment appropriately when the time comes. I love ff.net and all who comment, each and every new comment is as unique and personnable as the person who wrote it.
I especially love the videos people have made. I would love to try that but have no talent for that, so I will just marvel at the talents of others and keep on enjoying the videos.

I thought about this for a while who I would pick for these roles and needless to say nothing can top the original cast it was the cast that made the show 'magical' but this is what I came up with:

Zoe: Hallie Berry

Mal: Ben Afflec? Mel Gibson? George Clooney?

Wash: Steve Zahn

Book: Morgan Freeman

Simon: Leonardo DiCaprio? Noah Wyle?

Kaylee: Alyson Hannigan

Inara: Jennifer Love Hewitt? Catherine Zeta
Jones? Selma Hyak?

Jayne: The Rock

River: This one was really really hard 'cause when I was like who can play a crazy person who kicks ass? the person that came into my head was oh the girl from the 4400 ep...then I felt really stupid 'cause that was Summer...so yeah..I guess Rachel McAdams I really don't see it but I mean I had to pick someone.

ZOID

Apropos of virtually nothing:

I am currently writing a fanfic called "Shadow", intended to be a sequel to Serenity, since I reckon it's highly questionably -- or at least, 'hopefully iffy' -- that Firefly will return to the screen, large or small.

I'm still hoping and praying, like all of y'all. But like Mal said, that might be a long wait for a train that don't come.

So, I'm dabbling, thus:

Dramatis Personae
Malcolm Reynolds – A transport ship's captain; portrayed by Nathan Fillion (adult), ? (8 years old), and ? (18 years old).

Angus Reynolds – Malcolm's paternal grandfather, a cattle rancher; portrayed by Clint Eastwood.

Deborah Stuart-Reynolds – Malcolm's mother; portrayed by Bonnie Hunt.

Shaun Reynolds – Malcolm's father, a cattle rancher; portrayed by Kevin Costner.

Magnus Reynolds – Malcolm's older brother, leader of Stuart's Raiders; portrayed by Daniel Day Lewis (adult), ? (10 years old), and ? (21 years old).

Victor Stuart – Malcolm's maternal grandfather, a widower and elderly single father of 4 girls (no sons); portrayed by Sir Anthony Hopkins.

[The 'surviving' cast of “Serenity” returns intact]

General Richard 'By The Book' Wilkins – An Alliance field general, a brilliant military tactician and jurist; portrayed by Ron Glass.

Vera Cobb – Jayne's mother, a sharecropper's widow and (strict but loving) single mother of 8 boys and 6 girls; portrayed by Linda Hunt.

“NoMan” – a former Alliance operative; portrayed by Chewitel Ejiofor.

Daisy – a slave from a neighboring ranch, Malcolm's first love (aged 18); portrayed by Kiera Knightley, Laura Marano (7 years old).

Vernon Pettigrew – a neighboring rancher; portrayed by Brad Dourif.

Supernumeraries include: additional Reynolds brothers and sisters (Malcolm aged 8), totaling 6 females and 3 additional males, various ages between 6 and 17; various cutthroat-types to populate the Raiders; assorted ranch hands; church congregation; slaves of various ethnicity; saloon girls and patrons; Alliance citizenry, officers and soldiers.

***********

If anyone could fill in the question marks above with a list of candidates, I'd appreciate it. My goal is to publish a cast list so that those who read my 'fic can visualize it in their minds, as though it were a BDS...

By the bye: Angela Bassett would've made a good Zoe if she were maybe 10 years younger. Zoe is supposed to be a contemporary of Mal's; but I suppose it could work. And no doubt she's got the physique to pull off the 'warrior woman' role. She was fantastic as 'the muscle' in "Strange Days" (1995).

Couchily,

zoid

P.S.
Might have to rethink D.D. Lewis. He's 14 years older than Nathan; that's a tough sell. Luckily, I haven't written him any lines as an adult yet. He had just the right sort of energy in "Last of the Mohicans" and "Gangs of New York", too...

If the original cast weren't in the BDM I wouldn't have gone to see it nor would I have bought several copies of the DVD. I would have just gone back to watching my Firefly DVDs. I can't picture anyone else playing Malcolm Reynolds especially Brad "Narcissus" Pitt. The whole idea of any other actors being cast as our Big Damn Heroes is both insulting and ludicrous.

Mal, really- William Mapother, that guy who played Ethan Rom on Lost(cause he's Tom Cruise's cousin and he at least looks a lot like Mal)

Zoe- Michelle Hurd (Law and Order SVU's Monique Jeffries)

Wash- Steve Carrell (hey, we're capatilizing on success and he already knows how to play the weak one in a relationship)

Simon- Ewan McGregor

River- Winona Ryder

Book - Morgan Freeman (definitely)

Kaylee- Alexa Vega

Inara- Elizabeth Hurley

Jayne- The Rock

Wait 'til you read it before you start hating it. I promise it'll make some sense of things.

Whether or not Joss would approve, is another question entirely. Still, if you read my "School Days" I think you'll be struck by some similarities between it and the "R. Tam Sessions", which Joss wrote and filmed in one weekend in summer of '05. So maybe I won't be so far off the mark that it would actually make someone physically ill...

(NB: "School Days" was posted on 10/29/04, almost a year prior, so no cheating on my part. And if JW wants any part(s) of "Shadow", once I have it posted -- not to say that he would, mind you -- he can take it with my blessings, without so much as a by your leave. It's his story, after all.)

Fictionally,

zoid

P.S.
Lest someone think I was saying JW 'borrowed' "School Days", I wasn't. I was simply pointing out that I had guessed what was on Joss' mind to a fair degree of accuracy, as regards River's days at the Academy. I doubt seriously he ever reads our fanfics. The thing with the pens, though, freaks me out a little.

I wouldn't suggest any crew for Serenity other than the original cast. If suppose Captain Tightpants and crew encountered another Firefly in space and got to be friends, consider this cast for the crew of the second ship:

captain-Johnny Depp
first mate-Zoe Saldana
Jayne character-Grace Jones as Zula from Conan the Destroyer
pilot-Josh Hartnett
shepherd-Sean Connery
mechanic-Liv Tyler
companion-Rachael McAdams
doctor-Orland Bloom
crazy sister-Keira Knightley

I'm particularly fond of the idea of the very mature Sean Connery playing a shepherd.

So many worlds. So little time.
