Just posted by fearless leader at the Whedonesque boards ( http://whedonesque.com/comments/9548):

Abusing links is the only way I know how to live. But I am here with a purpose, my friends. Call me joss Whedon: Rumor Crusher! (Or "Mister Fendendo", if we're being intimate.)

Since everyone's all abuzz with the CW rumor, I have to get all official and say: WE'VE STARTED FILMING NEW EPISODES! Of Dateline. I'm such a troll.

No, there haven't been any overtures from the CW as regards a SereniFly spin-off. I haven't even heard the orchestra tuning up. But if they happen to come calling, I do know what I would do:

1) In order to keep the show cost efficient, we would get rid of a few things we don't need, like spaceships, floors, and Jewel. (You thought I was gonna say 'costumes', didn't you? Porn guy.)

2) Nathan is busy making movies, but since I don't want new cast members, everybody in the cast would just move over one. Jewel (she's back!) would play Mal, Ron would play Kaylee, Morena would play Book, and so on.

3) People love a happy ending. So every episode, I will explain once again that I don't like people. And then Mal will shoot someone. Someone we like. And their puppy.

4) The actors can make up their dialogue. I'm bushed, and they're all funny, and the hell with it. Maybe I'll give them a premise to work off of, like "You're all in trouble" or "Wash has a thing". They could maybe light it too.

5) Klingons, but not alien Klingons. But still Klingons.

So already the show is running like a well oiled companion. I'm just proud to be a part of the Country Western network, and I know this will be their biggest hit since "Have Space-Gun, Will Travel."

I hope, as always, this clears things up. And I hope the executives at the Carnie Wilson network DO give me a call. I've got a million ideas for redoing their offices.

Power to the people who are powerful enough to crush the other people! -jossy.

If there WERE overtures he would never tell us. That'd be a deal-killer fer sher.

Think about corporate mergers: Anybody who finds out about it in advance and blabs gets fired, anybody who acts on that info gets thrown in jail for insider trading, and the poor stiffs who work for either company had just keep scratchin out their 9-to-5s until they hear it on CNN. If we hear it, it prolly ain't true.

In other words, Joss is havin fun with us... but only time will tell.

Well good on him for getting in there and debunking that rumor quickly. Now I don't have to wonder anymore. I didn't think it was true, but I did have a tiny glimmer of hope. *sigh*

As for the, "He's not allowed to tell us if something really is being talked about" stance, my thinking is that he would just refrain from commenting were that the case. I seriously doubt he would lie about it. Stupid rumors. *grumble*

See, this is why you should never get your hopes up to begin with. We all love Firefly, but I think it's become pretty evident that there's not going to be a continuation of this show in any kind of television or movie realm. The sooner you all understand that, the sooner you can allow the healing process to begin.

Come on guys. Use your heads.

If you pay attention you'll see that for the purposes of legal and "dont put your foot in your mouth" practices, producers and actors will often say and maintain certain points of interest up until the exact second in which something is down on paper. Don't put too much stock in any one thing.

If someone saw them come out of that building, and there are whispers, no matter what the cast themselves say, it is a good sign. Of course they can't say anything; there's obligations. But the press can. And since this isn't exactly Star Wars Episode IX, i can't see this being started for the purposes of mainstream attention. Don't get your hopes up, but don't ye despair yet, either.

I refuse to lose hope that our beloved show will return in either a show or a movie.

I will wait until Joss says in a post, that the calvary has ridden in and we are getting a sequel or a new series, or a mini-series or a direct to DVD movie. I'm holdin'.

And I'll probably get my hopes up again and have them dashed again, but that's ok. I'm not gonna stop loving this show and characters and I'm not going anywhere.

Definitely my opinion...lest we all forget Joss rambled similar inneuendo before he could officially announce the BDM. For me this is almost as good as Joss saying the series has returned. The CW must be careful not to announce their Fall lineup too prematurely.

While I don't think it is a done deal that the series is returning, I mentioned on another thread that a mini-series would allow the CW to gauge potential series interest, and I think that is the route they will take.

We need a Joss to Reality dicitionary...or a decoder ring (that would be cool)...notice he never says "we aren't coming back," he debunks a "Firefly spin-off" not Firefly/Serenity nor does he mention the CW by its correct name...semantics.

Just Believe.

We will hold...we hold till Mal gets back...wait do you see that on the horizon?

While of course I'm disappointed that Joss didn't come right out and say that they were deep in negotiations about another season of Firefly, I'm not really surprised. CW's a brand-new station, and taking on Firefly is a financially risky option. That does NOT mean, however, that they won't do so at some point.

I'm looking at it this way: actions speak much louder than words, and thus far there have been quite a few words bandied about, most of them vague. So what? It's called deniability. The action that sparked all this brou-haha was three of our favorite actors strolling out of the CW offices. They were there for a reason. Now, whether we're all making Mount Everest out of a mini-mole hill (definitely a possibility), or CW actually was making noises about possibly making an overture to maybe bring Firefly back, I don't know, nor does anyone, except people who can't talk as long as they value their jobs.

Until I hear a flat-out denial of any further episodes whatsoever, until Joss tells us to hang up our brown coats and stop running ourselves ragged in an effort to recruit more folks to The Cause, I am just going to remain a naive, optimistic fool. To quote a previous poster: "They can have my hope when they pry it out of my cold, dead fingers." Amen.

Bring on the naysayers then! I can take 'em...

Knew the rumors were too good to be true. I doubt all our dreams are going to come true so perfectly just out of the blue.

At least we all got a nice image of a well oiled companion.

And for those who think joss is just playing with his words so that he isn't really denying anything, I think that's a little delusional. This is just how joss posts. Plus I don't think people usually like to refer to the network they're doing business with as Crack Whore network (later in the thread).

I like the Browncoat attitude -- "it still may happen".

It may or may not. I have no clue. I don't even know what I'm doing today, much less Joss Whedon.

However, I hope we don't turn into the likes of the Beatles fans who are still hoping for a Beatles reunion, even though half of the band is dead.

There will come a point when it would be silly to keep hoping, but that point hasn't arrived yet.

So, until then, we should remain positive, do our part (without stalking the actual cast & crew, of course), and hope for the best.

I think perhaps he is saying that even if he's given the ok to do the show again. Why go through all the angst again? He's tired of all the crap he has to take from all the higher ups and their opinions of where he wants to take his own program. They step right in and take over and tell him what he can and can't do--and then there are actors that want to input their say on dialouge, etc. It must be truly exhausting. Perhaps it's not as bad when it comes down to the big screen. Even if he's given a green light to small screen--he may not want to go that route again--and who can blame him. He's had a taste of more creative control on the big screen. It would be a director's dream. The show was his baby and was manipulated and then nixed. He's most likely still a bit pissed about it. I'm betting on seeing a new installment on an HBO, Cinemax, etc--or theatrical release. Just my opinion. Just reading between the lines of his comments here.

I read it as more along the lines of "I'll only do the show if the proper resources are in place and I have doubts as to CW having the willingness to provide those resources." Maybe I'm wrong and I hate to put words into another persons mouth (particularly puting words into the mouth of somebody who is much better at words than I am) but that's the vibe I'm taking away from this.

And hey there is still good news. We will be getting more comics and there still is hope for a Serenity sequel of some form. Sure I'd prefer a new series, TV is Firefly's native medium after all, but movies are fun to watch as well.

Hello All,
Here's my take on this. Instead of being down in the dumps our rumor was smashed why don't we keep doing what we are doing to push for more Firefly/Serenity? No point in fretting over what we can't control. But maybe we should be flooding CW with e-mails and letters to let them know we are loyal to the show and will do what we can to get more Firefly. The fanbase is still growing, and it seems whoever watches it for the first time becomes addicted for life. In the mean time, gather more fans, buy the dvd's and keep spreading the word to everyone you know. I think there is hope, we just need to be patient and never give up!

Anyone else who can't give up, just can't, write
to this person. I intend to beg shamelessly - but
politely of course.

Just Believe.

We will hold...we hold till Mal gets back...wait do you see that on the horizon?

When you're out of the blue and into the black"

I'm new here, but I have to agree with GrimJack in regards to Joss's post. Belief is our strongest ally. From everything I know, it was the belief of the fans that got us a movie and has kept this, our beloved 'verse, spinning.

I believe.

However, while our belief in continuation may, quite possibly, never be realized, we need not believe but rather KNOW that the SereniFly 'verse has become too powerful to just fade away without a word. As GrimJack said, we hold. We hold until they get back.

"...there's a whole universe of folk who are gonna know it too. They're gonna see it. Somebody has to speak for these people." -Mal

ZEEK

I like the idea of begging and all, but how about a more devious route? I think we should write to them and say how happy we are that they chose to revive Firefly. Saying we are now their biggest fans and we can't wait for their network to hit our tvs so we can tune in and throw out or remotes because we'll never need to change the channel again.

It's much easier to say no to a begging request than to tell someone that they're wrong about watching their channel.

"No, you're mistaken. You shouldn't watch our network, because we didn't pick up Firefly. Sorry about the misunderstanding."

No one wants to say that.

GLOBLABSURDITY

I've seen the commentary--yes, he did say that. I've also read alot of comments he's made in interviews about what he went through during the making of Firefly. It was a struggle for him to tell his story his way. Creative control was not entirely in his hands--I'm not a writer--but I can tell you that I'd be LIVID if I'd have to deal with what he's had to deal with. Also, when I say 'perhaps' in regards to Joss--I'm not putting words in his mouth--that's why the 'perhaps' is there. It's to bring out the hypothetical aspect to the thought I'm presenting--or just the thought that's coming out of my @ss--however anyone wants to take it--lol.
For the record--I want as badly as the rest of you to see our show back on the little screen. I'm just trying to see things from what might 'perhaps' be Joss' point of view having to deal with all the politics of hollywood--from having read his own comments.
Cheers.

LMAO! That is truly a grand and devious idea! *snerk* And like all the best evil plans, you can always claim total ignorance and blame it on Kristen's rumours ;p I can't really see a worst-case scenario there...
