OH, I forgot the funniest part. We were all standing around talking about the commentary we'll do for the DVD set... There'll be all eleven of us sitting in a room with microphones and beer. Poking fun at our on-screen selves. :-))
I can't wait!
Peace,

Can't wait to hear more about this project!

Beer and commentary, yes. Very good. The stuff of actualized joy.

But I'm curious to know more about how we'll fly again. I mean-- are we really going out there, to the black?

I hope and hope.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

This is AWESOME!!! I had heard the rumors, but was afraid to get my hopes up....

I will buy a DVD set for each of my friends and one or two for myself!!!

That's the stuff, Browncoat! They can put me down for multiple copies as well. We'll show those reavers at Fox the kind of loyalty (backed by hard currency) they pissed away!

A thought; how's about Browncoats in major cities make a point of purchasing DVD sets and contributing them to public libraries' A/V collections (perhaps under the auspices of the Browncoat Foundation, and with a smattering [or more!] of media attention). One way to get the word out...

Keep flyin'!

You can always tell if it's Adam Baldwin or someone that's faked the name because of the gavel beside his name on the Fox forum. That's assuming no one has hacked his password or anything crazy like that.

Actually, Adam posts quite frequently over at the Official Board (bless his heart). His name appears with a wee gavel, identifying him as a "moderator," and verifying his posts. Seems sooth to me!

Reminds me of days long past. . .
I was thinking (however fuzzily) of the original Star Trek, back in the mid sixties, and the petitions that were being signed and sent to NBC, pleading with the powers-that-be to bring it back. Remember y'all, that process took several years before the first movie came out. However, with the internet AND snail-mail, hopefully, we can bring Firefly back, somewhere, somehow. . . . .and hopefully, it will be at LEAST half as popular!
In the meantime, I'll keep watching my eps downloaded from the 'net.

Talk peace, but, carry a BIG stick.

Being a basically optimistic person, it rather pains me to say this...but it seems to me that the reason for the resurrection of Star Trek had nothing to do with petitions and other expressions of fannish adoration. It had everything to do with the success of a little film called Star Wars, and Paramount's scramble to find a franchise of their own...and.. lookit that! We have this "Space Trek" thing, or whatever, and we won't even have to pay for the rights! Then they proceeded to rush Robert Wise into releasing an essentially incomplete film, to start the coin a-flowin'(much improved, but not entirely saved by his loving restoration this past year). As yet another example of cynical, fan-indifferent studio shenanigans, it would seem a thin bough on which to hang our hopes for "Firefly."

On the other hand, Roddenberry was no Whedon. The guy's energy and inventiveness and parental passion for his projects gives me hope *despite* the Star Trek example (and look to what ignominious depths *that* franchise has sunk).

And here's me with the hoping (hopinghopinghopinghoping...)

I'm feeling optimistic that there will be more Firefly in our future (beyond the initial 15 hours). If any show has the potential to grow legs and take off after a slow (albeit sabotaged) start, Firefly does!

With UK Sci Fi about to air the eps in the intended order, Firefly has the chance to open up a whole new continent of fans.

I envy the folk on the Euro side of the pond who will be seeing Firefly for the very first time the way we should've seen it for the first time. But I am hopeful their added voices will resuscitate the franchise considerably.

A US DVD release will leave additional people wanting new eps as well! If Fox can get those suckers out before Christmas, I promise to give EVERYONE on my list a DVD set of Firefly for the holidays.

It's been frustrating, but we're building a movement person by person! The results of this effort are on the horizon.

I believe without Star Trek paving the way, Star Wars may never have been created.
In 1969, the last ep for Trek was aired. After thousands and thousands of letters, and who knows how many phone calls, it was put up for syndication and became extremely popular. In 1975-76, the first ideas for ST: The Motion Picture were tossed around between Paramount and Gene Roddenberry. In 1979 (early 1980?), ST: The Motion Picture was released. This movie was already in the works "before" Star Wars was released in 1977. I would say Star Wars helped Star Trek in selling more tickets.
As far as a comparison between Roddenberry and Whedon, I see many similarities (creator, writer, producer), but Gene's major claim-to-fame was the Star Trek franchise, a thirty-year franchise, while Joss' record includes some very popular shows, but not enough time to show the same longevity. Time will tell.
If Firefly can have half the popularity of Star Trek, it will do very well indeed!!

Talk peace, but carry a BIG stick.

Point of order: Star Trek was going to be cancelled at the end of the 2nd season in 1968. The letter writing campaign was what convinced them to bring it back for a 3rd. Of course they moved it to 10pm on Fridays, and then cancelled it after the end of the season. But, because it had gone on for 3 whole seasons, they were able to sell it into syndication easily (most networks require at least 3 seasons so they can run an episode every weekday and not get too repetitive). Once it was syndicated, the fan base grew exponentially -- spawning the Star Trek conventions, the SNL parodies, and eventually the movies and new series.

Great idea Noocyte! I will do just that. I will donate one to the local library, and see if the VA hospital would like a copy.

Clearly my information on the demise and resurrection of Star Trek was incomplete (coming as it did primarily from a couple of Starlog articles, read MANY years ago, which formed impressions that I did not subsequently bother to amend). I stand corrected (and, I must add, rather more encouraged than I was yesterday!).

Incidentally, when I said that Roddenberry (whose memory I revere) was no Whedon, I was very specifically referring to my sense that the Great Bird of the Galaxy was more a visionary than a mover/shaker in the way that Joss seems to be when he becomes passionate about a project.

Shiny! Glad you liked the idea. The VA hospital notion is a nice touch which I hadn't considered (since the library idea occurred to me basically as I was typing it!). I'll see about that for the VA in my area (Philadelphia, lest we double up on each other).
