Hello everyone! I'm new here, so please don't get mad at me if this question has been asked a million times already. But I just can't help but asking...

Does anyone know what the current status of Firefly/Serenity is? I mean, is it going to be a mini-series,t.v series, or another movie? I've heard some rumors, but I'm not sure how true they are. If anyone could help clear me up, that would be great!

Right now, as it stands. There isn't going to be any more Firefly. There hasn't been any moves made by a studio to bring it back.

It's dead, Jim.

aww,that sucks. Thanks replying, though.

What of these rumors of the firefly season 2(if/when it's made) going straight to dvd floating around? Or have they just been thrown out the window?

Officially, it's in limbo. No word yet on anyone picking up a new series, mini-series, made-for-TV movie, DVD-Direct movie, sequel, or anything else except that Joss is going to be writing some comix for it.

But that's just the latest. Tomorrow could change all that. I won't say it's dead. I prefer to think of it as just sleeping. Soon, Firefly will awaken, and it will have a mighty roar! (But that doesn't mean it's a lion. Serenity doesn't think of itself as a lion...)

Welcome IcanKillYouWithMyBrain,

First of all, let me tell you we are glad you are here. I am kinda the hander out of the browncoats so....

*hands IcanKillYouWithMyBrain a shiny new browncoat*

There have been rumors lately of a return to tv maybe on the coming CW network, but Joss posted on Whedonesque and said that wasn't true.

Second of all, we don't know what will come next in the line of a sequel or a tv show, we are waiting to find out. There will be more comics soon and some books comin' up too. After that, we shall see. I personally don't believe that the 'verse is over... I think we are holdin' til the Captain gets back.

It kinda depends on how many DVD's of Serenity sell and even how well the Firefly DVD's continue to do. But it is a good sign that there are more Browncoats signing on here... like you.. and maybe if we all buy lots of products and we clamor for more, the folks that CAN do something about a return WILL do something about a return.

How unfortunate, Ican, that your question was first answered by one of the most pessimistic posters I've seen on this board.

As for me, I'm confident that Firefly will be back in some form or other. Why?

1. We are just too pretty to die.

2. We have (already) done the impossible, and that makes us mighty.

3. Every single day, our ranks grow. More Browncoats means more dollars to whoever has the sense to bring this franchise back. And that's what ultimately matters to the purple bellies.

So don't let the Puddleglums of this 'verse get you down. Just hold, and it will be back.

I don't disagree on any particular point.

Thanks FollowMal! I'm honoured to be apart of this website and to wear the coat. Comic books, you say? That sounds cool! I have only heard a little bit about them. Are they out to buy in the stores, or are they in the process of being published? If so where can one get them from??

I see, Doncoat. Thanks for the reassurance. Yes, after that first reply I was a little down.

The first series of comic books is a three part afair that bridges the gap between the series and the movie. It has recently been compiled and released as Serenity: Those Left Behind (variously known as Sernety: TPB) you should be able to find this at a reasonably well stocked bookstore or comic store. Alternately of course there is always Amazon and it's competitors.

There are more comics being planed for release but I don't think dates have been set. You should be able to find these at comic book stores when they are available.

The Serenity comic books are out in TPB form and you can order them from Amazon or buy them from your local bookstore. They cover the time between the show and the movie. Then they have just announced that there will be more coming out... I think this summer, but don't quote me on that. There will be a 'coat come along soon and post all kinds of info for you. Have you read "Finding Serenity", and "Serenity: The Visual Companion" and the novelization of the movie. They are excellent and some folks have said on here that the RPG book is awesome. I'm gonna order it, when I've sent my latest gifts of the movie and caught up my bill.

I'm so glad DonCoat reassured you. There isn't any reason for pessimism. We will have more of the 'verse!

It really is too early to tell. The movie is still being released on DVD in some parts of the world. I think the Australian DVD was only released on Feb. 6th which was about 9 days ago.

Joss has said that the DVD sales are what they are waiting to see. It was always assumed that Serenity, like the Firefly box set, would do really well on DVD. That seems to be holding true so far.

As of today:
Firefly: Amazon.com Sales Rank: #20 in DVD
Serenity: Amazon.com Sales Rank: #21 in DVD

So don't get too upset about it just yet. There's still a few million miles left on the ol' bird.

Welcome Brain. :)

Don't mind the downers, they're losing the faith. We took a big blow with those CW network rumors and Joss debunking them. Some ninny over at E!Online was spreading rumors and we prefer facts, but it was such a tempting thing to believe. I admit, I was caught up in it.

There's still the contract that all the stars signed for a trilogy (apparently), so there IS something to look forward to!

go in peace, my friend. i hate to see a browncoater leave the ranks, but the freedom to choose your path is inherent in being one. the venom is misplaced, and i hope those who remain will not reply in kind. the 'verse is as much a mindset as a show or movie, the celebration of the right to think and act according to the values you have. if there is never another aired edition, which i am not convinced of, joss has given us a place to exchange ideas, to dream and create, to link with likeminded people who are not satisfied with swallowing the pablum we are offered. the true frontier is not "in the west" or at the edge of space, but in our minds and in our souls. we will hold, no matter what, because it is not in our natures to do anything else. remember my browncoated brothers and sister, to keep flying is always enough.

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

If I in any way sounded pessimistic in my earlier response, I wholeheartedly apologize. That was NOT my intent; quite the opposite, in point of fact. I was merely giving "the lay of the land" when I pointed out that, as of this moment, there are no plans to resurrect Firefly or Serenity in the immediate future.

I'm a "realist", so I know that means no new Firefly series this fall. But I'm also an optimist, so I never give up hope that there WILL BE a resurrection at some point. In all honesty, I think the best-case scenario we can hope for would still put any new Firefly/Serenity stories on the screen in 2 to 3 years' time. That's a long time to wait, but it's well worth it to me.

HOPE is what we Browncoats do. It's what we have. It's not much, but it's enough. I've no doubt that most, if not all, of us here HAVE lives already. Good lives that give us much joy. We're here, and we're still holding, and hoping, for something that will give us yet more joy, and will even let us "escape" our day-to-day lives for an hour or two.

To me, keeping hope for our Big Damn Show alive isn't about having a life or not; it's about making sure that The Powers That Be at the networks KNOW full well that there is a show out there that people care about, and that maybe they should look into bringing back. It doesn't mean it WILL happen, only that it COULD happen. I choose to believe that it will.

I'm not going to give up just because one rumor or another turned out not to be true. I'm not going to give up hope just because a little time has passed since the last incarnation came our way. If anything, the mere fact that we GOT Serenity at all only shows how much we have to hope for. We got a major motion picture made out of a half-season "failure" of a TV show. That doesn't happen very often. It means we still have fans in some high places, and that's cause for hope.

I see, Doncoat. Thanks for the reassurance. Yes, after that first reply I was a little down.

The thing that is so great about the reassurance is that it isn't just hopeful fan talk. When Firefly ended three years ago there were abundant numbers of folk who were glad to tell us that the show was dead, over, that was that.

Three years, and a wildly successful DVD, books, comics and a MOVIE, later... looks like maybe Firefly wasn't so dead after all.

We really do need to accept people's differing opinions. Though Operative is a pessimist, and granted he probably should not have been so raw with the new recruit, he should be able to hold his opinion and not be ostracised or ridiculed for it. I have seen far worse pessimists on the Battlestar Galactica board. yowsa.

But Operative also needs to take the punches as he doles them out.

I don't think Operative isn't pessimistic, he's just taken to anti-optimism

Anyway, I think the DVD sales remain pretty strong, I've watched both Firefly and Serenity get pushed down the list, only to wave as the former #1 movie goes plummeting past. Both have stayed in the top 20 since sometime last year (dates may vary as I measure time using the metric system). and other regions are still being released. Besides, shouldn't there be an extended collector's edition with the collector ovenmitts released sometime in the future. Those are always good money makers.
