I enjoy this lady's articles. In this one, she mentions Firefly and Veronica Mars in a positive light.

Veronica Mars is a series about a tough, yet vulnerable high school detective. In each episode, Veronica solves complicated crimes; along the way, she butts heads with an assortment of narrow-minded authority figures, and she does things that aren’t always on the clean side of the ethical line. This isn't just an updated Nancy Drew series; each season contains a longer mystery to unravel, giving the creators plenty of time to develop quirky, unusual characters. The longer story lines also challenge viewers to make sense of relatively complex narratives.

And although it's been canceled, Joss Whedon's Firefly is smartly crafted, with well-defined characters. It's a Western set in space, featuring a ship of smugglers trying to make their way in a world ruled by an unforgiving Alliance, a federation of rulers who have no qualms about practicing gruesome mental experiments on their citizens.

I look forward to a time when my daughters are old enough to talk about these shows with me. Not only can we talk about the art of creating characters and telling stories, but we can also talk about what it would be like to live in a world with a controlling, unethical government. What's more, we can talk about right and wrong, as every episode offers moral dilemmas for the characters to wrestle with.

Good article. TV isn't bad for kids. Stupidity is bad for kids.

That, and parents who use the TV as a babysitter without actually knowing or caring what's on. It's not the TV's responsibility to look after your kids.
