Can you name any other heroine, besides Zoe, in a movie or TV show that was portrayed without heels?

Just trying to think of some of them and no one else comes to mind. please help.

Well, I'd count River as a hero. ;)

Non Firefly, there's Sam Carter (SG-1). I'd have to check, but I'd guess that the Farscape girls (excluding Jool) all count (Aeryn, Chiana, Sikozu, Zhaan). Of course, the new Starbuck and Boomer (Battlestar Galactica) qualify.

I recall seeing someone else and noting big clunky River-style boots, but I can't recall where.

Plenty in animé too, like Sango (InuYasha), Cagali (Gundam Seed), Sakura (both the one from Naruto and the smaller one from Cardcaptors ), Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell: Stand-Alone Complex), and Hitomi (Escaflowne) all spring to mind.

Of course, there was Gargoyles, which gave us Demona (bare talons), Angela (bare talons), and Elisa (running shoes).

It's even catching on in comics: Wonder Girl wears running shoes, and the new Batgirl wears combat boots.

And of course, who can forget my personal vote for the most badass, butt-kicking female character in all of sci-fi: Lieutenant Ellen Ripley!

I'm the sort who constantly bemoans the lack of decent characterizations for female characters in sci-fi. Mara Jade over in Star Wars flat ticks me off. But Ripley, now she's the best. She's human (she's afraid of the aliens she has to face) but she still gets the job done in serious fist pumping, hollering at the screen fashion ("Get away from her, you BITCH!"). Classic stuff. If I ever wind up in some horrible nightmarish situation surrounded by acid-spewing abominations, I hope that Ripley's in charge.

Oh, and uh, back on topic, Firefly rocks, and Zoe is cool too.

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal, Fox!

Hows about Leela from Futurama, coincidentally killed off by Fox? Or Rose from Doctor Who?

No, I am not insane, I am crazy. Thank you for asking.

Speaking of Jovovich...she also went notably without heels for Resident Evil and Resident Evil Apocalypse.

They're brainless action romps. I've been horribly spoiled by the works of Romero and tend to expect too much from my zombie flicks, but still, not a bad way to while away a few hours. It won't expand your consciousness and the characters are pretty much standard stock, but the effects are nice and there's lots of pretty 'splosions. And everybody loves pretty 'splosions.

Curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal, Fox!

I have my doubts about that. Coulda sworn I saw Chiana in some sort of pump boots. Amd Zhaan too.

Thanks for the other examples though. I was getting really frustrated as commonly females on sci-fi are given the "hotty role" and always tend to wear heels, though they are also supposed do "action stuff" such as runnin' around, fightin' and jumpin' etc. You can't do that in heels, so what the heck?

Examples run the gamut of the Star Trek and Star Wars franchises, as well as Babylon 5, Aeon Flux (gag) Cleopatra 2525,

just my two cents. Call me the Angry Feminist Sci-fi fan.

I can run quite well in heels, not to mention that if someone wearing heals kicks someone, it'll hurt more. It just takes practice.

Wash: Yeah, but psychic? That sounds like science fiction.
Zoe: You live on a spaceship, dear.

Zhaan was barefoot. She never had shoes on.

AUGLAISE

Shane Vansen from Space: Above and Beyond.

I think there might *possibly* be one episode where she wore heels once, but I might be mis-remembering! She did kick some serious ass though, as well as being an amazing pilot.

I have to agree with ChrisPV and RIVER6213 that Lt Ripley is one of the best female action heros out there. Heck, she wasn't even wearing ultra-tight spandex! Just a scrubby pair of plain overalls (like Kaylee??). But I think Vasquez (also from Aliens) is my all-time favorite bad-ass butt-kicker. She might just give Jayne a run for his money. I just love the part where all the other marines start to lose their heads as the aliens close in and she yells "LET'S ROCK!" to a hail of heavy-duty gunfire from that enormous gun, with the star-shaped muzzle-flares lighting up the dark. Oh wow. I think I'm going to go watch that movie tonight. I should get the DVD so I can do a screen capture of that scene...

And Zoe is awesome.

Jayne: I once hit a guy in the neck from 500 yards with a bent scope. Don't that count upstairs?
Book: Oh, it'll be taken into consideration.
Jayne: You made that sound kind of ominous.
