what's with the chinese phrases?

I just started watching the DVD's and I love this show. With every episode I watch I get more and more pissed that this series was cancelled.

Anyway, can someone tell me why the characters speak chinese every once in a while? If this has been addressed before I apologize.

if you listen to the commentaries or, maybe its in some kind of history of FF verse, well ANYWAY, its because the english speaking cultures and chinese speaking cultures somehow merged (being the dominant powers) when everyone left 'earth that was' and traveled to the new system.

It is meant to just add to the feeling of Chinese and Western Cultures Merging together. It just adds that real feel to it.

Plus it lets them swear on Television without having to have a late time slot or having to bleep words out. which is just annoying when people are speaking.

After watching an episode with hubby I commented on how clever it was that they swore in chinese so we wouldn't have to hear stupid bleeps. Hubby looked at me all puzzled "They were speaking chinese?"
