Just wondering, is there any way that Firefly and or Serenity can be practically incorporated into any kind of school lesson. Always trying to find some way to learn and recruit at the same time.

Objects in space can be used to illustrate existentialism.....but other than that, you'd have to be very creative.

Wash: Yeah, but psychic? That sounds like science fiction.
Zoe: You live on a spaceship, dear.

Well... I gave a speech about being a firefly fan for my Speech Com. class earlier this semester but... yeah, that doesn't really help.

Are you a teacher? What do you teach?

Off the top of my head, I guess you could use firefly to teach about...

1) Plot Structure in fiction. Have people watch an episode and identify the climax, the rising action, etc.

2) As was already mentioned, "Objects in Space" can be used to talk about existentialism (probably why it is my favorite episode, or at least part of the reason... I have a thing for River and the branch...)

3) I guess you could use it as a starting point for a conversation about frontier life of the civil war, but this would be stretching it in an academic setting...

Hmm. I guess you could also use it as a starting point for a discussion about freedom (there's a lovely essay about freedom in the 'verse in "Finding Serenity"). Or an examination of the hero/anti-hero (like a character study of Mal?). Maybe for getting into a discussion about amoral v. immoral behavior... There are lots of things you *could* do with Firefly and learning, but lots of them... are not the best ideas ever.

"Objects in Space"
River: It's just an object. It doesn't mean what you think...
