Bright possibilties for Whedon’s “Firefly”

Firefly may be grounded, but it’s not quite ready to be scrapped.
Created by Joss Whedon(Buffy the Vampire Slayer), this Western-in-space spectacular was canceled by Fox this winter after a mere half-season’s run. Whedon, however, remains committed to the show’s possibilities-and hurt by it’s quick demise.
“I still haven’t given up on Firefly,” he says,”which may seem strange since its been off the air for months. If I can find a new home for Firefly, TV or movies or any damn thing,it will soften the blow.”
While he works for a revival, he at least has found a temporary home for two of the show’s stars. Gina Torres, who was Firefly’s first mate, has begun a run on WB’s Angel as the show’s “big bad,” Jasmine. And Nathan Fillion, who played the captain, starts a five-episode guest stint Tuesday on UPS’s Buffy. He plays Caleb, a cleric servant of “The First.”
“They’re very different roles,” Whedon says.”Gina gets to be all pretty, so she’s happy. And Nathan gets to be evil, so he’s having a ball.”
Whedon also may have found a home for Firefly on DVD. Fox is planning to release the show on disc in widescreen format, probably in December. Whedon is expected to provide commentary as he did for Buffy and Angel.

I went to the main page of USA Today's web page and there is a section on the left side that says print edition, click on today, then went to the life section, click on page 2, and then the article that said movies.

Maybe I can finally have something better than my collection of episodes recorded on tape. My copy of "War Stories" is a disgrace. The channel from which I recorded it needs some Browncoats on its staff.

Sarahetc, I have not seen any pictures from Atlanta. Probably because I haven't been to the Fox site in a while. I'll go check it out tomorrow -- Husband-mine is calling me to bed.

That all sounds very encouraging. I live in England, what do you think the chances are of an eventual DVD release over here? At least with it being shown on the Sci Fi channel there'll be some justification for them to bother releasing it here, but its only a smallish cable channel so maybe they wouldnt think there'd be enough interest for it. Plus, if it does get a UK release, what chances that it would have the same bonus material (commentries etc) which we're hoping to see on the US release should it happen?!

Ooh, so many questions, so long to wait for answers!

How do Region settings work? U.S. DVD's won't play in England? I'm a little confused. Sarahetc threw me off earlier, and I haven't quite recovered, my apologies for sounding stupid.

Oh ! I can't wait to get my boxset !

I live in the U.K, but I'll be getting the dvd's as soon as they are released in the U.S.
For those in the U.K who want to purchase the Firefly dvd boxset. All you need is a multi-region dvd player. You can probably get one pretty cheap one if you look around the internet. As for actually buying the dvd boxset, you should try www.dvdconcept.com or www.play.com

DVD's released in different countries are encoded differently. The U.S DVD is region 1... the U.K is region 2.

I wonder if he will make any comments about how Fox handled the airing of his show?

I doubt if Joss would. He has been dealing w/ Networks long enough to know not to point out their obvious short comings, especially if he may have to work w/ them again in the future.
