Ok, I've got a few ideas, but I know how bright and shiny you all are and would like some help from you all. We're good at banding together to get something done.

What I'm looking for is ideas and recruits to begin helping "spread the virus." It worked for Joss-ie-poo in promoting the film, so it's time to give those bad-boy movie and TV execs a taste of their own medicine. It got us our BDM and we CAN and WILL do more. It got us comics on the way. Know what my sin is? I'm gorram greedy. I want MORE.

The rules are this: if it's something that needs a kick in the butt or a 'starter' you mentioning the idea volunteers you for it. Your assignment, you get it done.

Things already posted on this board:
1) Editing your sigs in your mail messages to point to this site. Use multiple Firefly related site links if need be.

2) Old standby: lend and recruit. Been done. KEEP doing it!

3) Donating DVDs. Good idea, but expensive for those of us with limited funds. Those who can, thank you!

4) Vote. ANY little poll or questionaire that has a mention of our BDH's or Firefly/Serenity, BOMB THEM! Post them here.

5) Hand-written letters. Keep at 'em. Go for one or two a week. Someone, anyone. Once we get a more focused idea of where to write and what looks most promising, we'll slam 'em harder.

If I'm missing some, which I'm sure I am, quote these and add onto it. We can have someone issue these suggestions once FollowMal hands out the new recruits' spankin new browncoats.

Hou zi de pi gu! Guess that'd be me since it was my suggestion...

+++

What I'm also looking for is a more organized way to get stuff done. We're a bunch of rabid fans all disorganized and the like. We need to get cracking and figure out how to get together a little more than just a few websites.

I could use some ideas and more than a little help. There's something I'd like to try, but I'm gonna need a few handy recruits to pull it off. If it doesn't work, y'all can shoot me or shove me out an airlock.

If I gotta do it myself, I will. But help'd be nice too.

Well, we did some of our Browncoat part. We bought the dvds (series and movie) for a friend, but her boyfriend had already given them to her. *grrr....*

Anyways...So we donated them to the local library. I highly suggest this. So far, they've been circulating pretty widely.

Other than that...Umm...have shindigs and invite non-browncoats to convert them....

Okay, brain cramp. When I think of more, I'll post them.

I'm glad someone wants to actually do something.

Cheers,

Actually, I'm looking for a larger scale than just this. Please don't think I'm downplaying everything everyone has done so far. It's gotten us this far! It's gotten us a movie and comics and some oh-so-nice books!

But we need to take it a step further.

As to purchasing DVDs for libraries, please don't forget your local colleges in those libraries.

Followmal came up with an idea:
Writing to local newspapers

Most of them have a community comments or letters to the editor something along those lines. If we can't hit the execs straight up, we raise awareness with the masses and come at them sideways.

It isn't a full page advertisement, but a word here or there (especially CONSTANT letters) will begin to pique interest.

Make it a part of your Letter-Writing Weekends!

Ok, since I mentioned it, I'll do it. I'll clip and scan what I write and post it when it goes thru.

I know the folks that run my local paper and I'm pretty sure they'll let me write a review. I'll keep everyone posted.

ETA: I think in addition to my review I'll write a little about the Browncoats and our human interest story. That'll get us some notice too.

I have an idea that hasn't been discussed before. I had the idea of making fliers for Serenity/ Firefly to put up in public places. I was thinking of putting them up in my college. If someone could make a really cool recruiting flier and attach it on here I would gladly print out a ton and post them around my school and maybe other areas around town that people would see them.
Also, it wouldn't hurt to see if you could post one on the video store door. It's advertising for them and it would get people curious about the movie for those that haven't heard of it.
I would make the fliers if I had that kind of talent on the computer with whatever program would be best, but I'm more of a media guy my own self. So if someone can make a cool one hop to it!

IS, there are some cool fliers in The Blue Sun Room, lets see .... I think it's 10th Crewmember that makes 'em. Hang on....
ok, it's 11th Hour who does some fliers. Also over on the other Browncoat Board there may be some in their art/fanfic section. I'll check around and you do too and maybe we can come up with some that have been used. Or maybe we can get someone to make us some all shiny and new.
If we ask... I'll bet there will be a Browncoat who will help us.

That's a great idea!

Now we just need to find someone who's good at creating images like that.

It'd need something along these lines:
Tagline from the movie or relevant quote
Screencaps from movie or series
Possible mention of this website
Simple, to the point, and not too many colors.

I'm terrible at something like this, all I've got for photo editing is MSWord and MSPaint.

If everyone printed a few out, dropped them off at the video stores, libraries, colleges, town halls, movie theaters... It'd be a way to get something done.

That's a good idea. Not only have the flyers but have but have a viewing where the students can watch a few episodes of FireFly. IMO, people tend to ignore flyers, but if you advertise that your showing a FREE viewing on campus, students would attend and become hooked.

I'm just a confused thirteen-year-old trying to make his way in this eerie-ass 'verse, but I'll see what I can do about recruiting Browncoats. Once the Independents (me and my buddies) get enough weapons (DVDs and BDMs and Comix) we'll topple the Alliance (FOX, Homogenized tv) with an all out assault (letters, making new comics, making some computer episodes).

I think a little chaos is in order.

I have another idea that's along these lines. Lots of college campuses have movie theaters that show second-run films as well as older movies. So I suggest that everyone contact college theaters nearby (even if you aren't a student--just don't advertise that fact) and ask them to show Serenity.

At the Univ. of Maryland there is a student group that sponsors FREE screenings in the school's theater. If such an organization exists on your campus, ask them to show the BDM.

If a you do succeed at persuading them to show the movie, then get in touch with the student newspaper a few days before the screening and ask
them to write a blurb. If they refuse, then you can always submit a brief editorial or letter to the editor announcing the screening. Some strategically-placed flyers around campus can also draw larger crowds. If the screening is open to the public, then be sure to let Browncoats in the
area know.

Another thought: If your local movie rental store does not carry Firefly, then ask them to order it.
Most stores, especially independently-run ones, are happy to comply with these requests.

Mine's a Mom and Pop thing, and when I suggested it and they kinda hesitated, I donated them a copy. Now they mention it's connection to Serenity when it goes out the door. Gene tells me it rents really well. I need to donate them another copy.... twice the exposure. Any Browncoats who can afford to, try donating too.

THIS is better!

People getting involved and brainstorming and doing instead of just sitting by and hoping!

It'll take work and action to get our second movie. If Universal and Fox won't plug our show then we will. We have to let them know how much it means to us.

Going to work on my letters tonight.

Anyone found someone to do a fairly professional looking flyer yet?

As of next week I shall also begin making fan vids. I would like to make many of them over the course of the year. One of them I would like to make would be a Firefly trailer, maybe 5 minutes or so to help as a recruiting tool. If I ever say it's a sci-fi western I get the look. When I am done with these fanvids, anyone is welcome to copy and spread the word as long as no one takes credit for my work.

Perhaps those handwritten letters aren't the way to go. I think I like the idea of just a postcard, cheaper to send and easier to write. If we go ahead and do those, we can run them off quicker and easier.

Any thoughts on this?

Got my newsletter today from http://www.browncoatsriseagain.com/

I sent them a copy of our little list of ideas on how to spread the signal. Can I get some help with this one? Any website you're a member of, send off our ideas to, post them or e-mail the site owner. This includes fansites of just the characters too.

The edited list of additional things to do:

1) Putting Firefly links in your signature for e-mails.
2) Lend DVDs and recruit.
3) Donate: DVDs and books to amazon wishlists, libraries, college libraries, troops overseas.
4) Vote for Serenity/Firefly and our BDH's on any online poll you can find. Post them here and spread the word so we can all do it too.
5) Write a film commentary, letter to the editor, small feature article, or community voice item to your local paper about Serenity/Firefly.
6) Make up a flyer promoting Serenity/Firefly and this website to be placed around college campuses, in libraries, at the local market, in local comic book stores.
7) Put a personal ad in the paper looking for a group of Browncoats to meet on a regular basis. Get together and play the shiny new RPG together.

A few reminders:
Try postcards instead of long letters to network and movie execs. Cheaper, faster, easier to read.
Please refrain from illegal downloads and copying. Money talks. We're gonna let them hear us loud and clear.

Stick with 'You cant stop the signal'...its mysterious enough to pique interest, I use it in several of my messenger profiles and I get a lot of questions from people when they read it. 6 converts who purchased both set and movie, and counting, may not seem like a lot, but when its 5 words in a profile, it is a little going a long way.

I could contribute to creating one, given everyone's suggestions to content, what message we want to say, etc., and do a bit of photoshop stuff. It would be cool to have an absolute purpose to a flyer though, besides just saying (and showing) how great a show/movie it is..
It would be very shiney if, say, we could band together by state and locations, and kinda form little browncoat troups.. maybe enlist people like that.. greatness in numbers ya know? Maybe a generic flyer that could work for everyone! Not sure if there are any fan groups like this already existing...?? Can anyone help expand on this thought??

My guess in starting this flier thing, is how we get across to people. Using the sci-fi western genre won't work. Too many people just say it's odd and disreguard. Joss is an excellent writer but some people immediately dismiss him from Buffy and Angel. Maybe we need to market the characters themselves more than anything else. I'm not exactly sure how to do that, but i'm just throwing around ideas and hope it'll spring an idea for someone else or me.

We've been doing our part within the scifi community--because believe it or not, a lot of scifi fans haven't been converted yet.

Last weekend, we performed music from our scifi album at ConDFW, where we put on a "Filk of Firefly" panel. During the con, we had several people tell us that they were now convinced to check out Firefly or give it a second try. (Hey, not everyone is convinced right off the bat.)

Don't forget to grab your sharpie and denote your favorite Firefly website somewhere on the inside, even if it isn't here. (sorry haken!) But 'long as the word gets spread, we'll take any mention we can get. They'll find their way here eventually anyways! ...especially as this site's mentioned on the DVD its own self.

You know a thing that surprised me about Los Angeles? Entertainment Billboards. Billboards for movies, for TV, for every award ceremony on the planet - especially for best picture nominees at Oscar time. I've no idea how to rent a billboard for any length of time, or how much it would cost. But it would be a shiny thing indeed to go to downtown Hollywood (or maybe to Beverly Hills, across the street from Fox corporate headquarters) and see a simple message writ with block letter font, in white text, on black blackground, in letters 20 feet high - Bring Back Firefly.

These are awesome! I'm also glad that you got those mphillips postcards, they rock.
Also, this isn't something that I've done but rather something that I, and others, can use. One of my favorite writers, Mercedes Lackey, has a big old Firefly/Serenity add on her homepage. It made me an even bigger fan of hers. I even bloged about it.

http://www.mercedeslackey.com/

It has occured to me that this is an excellent way to spread the word. Unrelated Fandom. I know quite a few ML fans and they might be more willing to try something that she respects and admires. And I have proof that she does. From there it can spread. No fantasy/sf fan likes just one author and they are very often members of other fan sites and (as we prove) they are often obssessive.

8) Post our flyers around town: supermarkets, hobby and comic stores, college campuses.

ShineyShindig,

All I can say is ooo, the blue one, I love the blue one!

Great job! I've printed off a bunch and will spend a couple of hours in town tomorrow spreading them about. I'm a business owner here and know all ( yep, small town) the other business owners. They'll let me hang 'em.

I'm going to get card stock tomorrow. This weekend is BDsending out postcards weekend.

Now this will be on the front page top again... hope somemore folks notice it and come up with somemore ideas.

I have a website with a lot of guerilla marketing posters for Firefly/Serenity. They are bold, black & white art, easy to download, and can be photocopied onto color paper for more visual impact.

There are also "mini posters" which are very handy to give out to folks whenever and wherever.

The art is designed to be easily read from a distance, and to be eye-catching and get people curious.

The posters are ready to go... feel free to use them.

NUCLEARDAY

Mostly for the bumping, partly 'cause I'm bored and don't feel like doing the sleeping thingy just yet...

A muchos gracias to Kaele as well for working on organizing the movement.

One thing: I'm having trouble opening the postcard file. My computer's a little... eccentric at times, so I never know if it's just me, but thought I ought to mention it. Think a postcard's a great way to go, too. Haven't seen what they look like yet (must be amazing if you're using mphillips' work for them.) But I think the genius of a postcard is that you don't even have to read them, really, to get the point across...

Forgive me if missed it (just got back from my eye appointment and my eyes are still dilated), but has there been any progress at a form letter of some sort for sending out? (I've managed to tone it down some, but admittedly the first few letters I mailed out were a tad on the... zealous and kind of creepy FANatic side:) Also trying to dig into my big box o' books for some of Harlan Ellison's essays, had some good ideas about throwing his weight around effectively, IIRC.

Anyways, glad to see some organization around here. First came around to the forums looking to help the cause, and shiny to see people coming up with ways to do that.

KAELE

I think it's more a thing of finding creative ways to do it. I know myself, I know my pockets are not so deep, so home made postcards and posters are right in my budget. Trying to build my own collection of stuff and it's going slowly.

I'm just looking of new an innovative ways to do this. What makes people sit up and notice is doing things that are unexpected. Hit them sideways, so they won't know what's coming and once we're there, it'll make more of an impact.

I need some ideas. Some plans. Anything anyone can think of to do this, we'll use it or tweak it to make it work. I've never done marketing before (should prob ask hubby as he's IN market research). I think it's time we hit up libraries and research out the most effective ways to market something.

Our goal: get more Firefly and Serenity.

We just need to make our way towards that goal. I'll take baby steps or leaps and bounds, I'm not too picky as long as we accomplish what we need to do.
