CEDRIC

Hi,

My brother recently got interested in Firefly, due to the DVDs my sister gave him for Christmas, after I converted her and her family.

Anyway, he commented that going to Browncoat websites was kind of daunting for a newcomer. We have a lot of inside jokes and special terminology. (I mean, he didn't know what a "Browncoat" was, or a flan, or the BDM.)

So I was thinking that some jing-chai webmaster out there should put together a "Beginner Browncoat" page that explains about the show, the movie, the movement, and the fan culture. One section could be similar to what's at www.scifi.com/firefly, and the rest could deal with Browncoat culture and terminology. I'm sure there's a lot of this info already out there; we just need to pull it to one place. Then any website dealing with Serenifly stuff could start out with a link to it, so that potential converts would know what the heck we're talking about.

Now, I'm not a jing-chai web designer, but I am a professional writer and would be happy to draft a lot of content.

Suggestions? Comments? Does this site exist and I just need to be better known?

Actually a good idea. I was kind of turned off the first time I logged on the fff.net because there was so much information.

2 things to add:

beigecoat = person who saw Firefly and/or Serenity and thought it was just okay

The Order of Things: http://www.fireflyfans.net/thread.asp?b=2&t=15816

A priceless thread for the newbie Browncoat who wants to experience everything Firefly.

Random question: What does Mal mumble (in Chinese?) after Dong Luh Mah at the end of the opening oner of Serenity? He's talking to Simon, say's Dong Luh Mah, turns and keeps talking!

This probably is a stupid question and I know I should in fact know this...but...what is flan?

Not exactly sure, but from what I gather it is a contraction of Firefly fans. If I'm reading things right, Nathan Fillion coined the term at a con.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

As a recent "Serenity DVD Browncoat", I've found this site to be the best guide to the 'Verse during my "Browncoat Quickening" (Highlander-folk will get that one). Lots of info to digest, but enjoying every bit of it!

Glad to be aboard!

Kaele, you are right about Nathan coining the word "flan", but it was during an interview that he stumbled over the words "firefly fans" and stuck 'em together.

It's stuck ever since.

Cedric, all of us who greet the new folks have talked about this a little, only more with the idea of having a centrally located thread. MisstresSahara actually started a thread she hoped new folks would go to so that they could be greeted and sort of "enlightened" to their way around. She was hoping that Haken would "pin" or "stick" it to the front page somehow, not sure how.

I think perhaps someone (you?) could message him and present this idea? It'd sure make my job of handin' out 'coats easier, just on a side note.

We could include stuff about "flans" and some of the other stuff right here in this thread.

I think we are gonna get a crowd of new folks in the weeks to come. It's gonna be great!

Sorry, I looked in my Visual Companion and it just interprets it as "speaking Chinese". Heck.
