...Other than David Newman doing the music for both.

Does the end of Galaxy Quest seem a lot like the ending of Serenity to you?

Our heroes are being dropped left and right; all seems to be lost, then a miracle saves them all!

Now, Joss must have seen this movie, do y'all think it maybe influenced him just a bit?

But even if it didn't, it's a movie all good Browncoats should see!

I thoroughly enjoyed "Galaxy Quest" -- saw it in the theatre, and watch it everytime it's on TV, and I never saw that parallel before.

Maybe it's just a coincidence.

Although, everyone draws (consciously or not) from everything we've experienced previously, so it's possible.

Yes, but not for the reason you stated.

I'm referring to them bringing the Reavers and in Galaxy Quest them dragging the mines.

Not like they're the only ones to ever use that though.

Taggart has to fight a rock creature that he can't win against, but DOES, and uses that "monster" against the bad guys!!!

How weird is that?

I guess one could see a parallel between the Protector dragging mines behind them and Serenity baiting the Reavers, but it didn't cross my mind when I first watched SERENITY.

I had recently read in a newer sci-fi film book a whole chapter devoted to GALAXY QUEST and all the meta aspects of the movie and how it's one of the few successful sci-fi/comedies out there. I was kinda psyched to read that this movie was deemed worthy of an in depth analysis. Hopefully five years from now, SERENITY will be put under the microscope of film academia if not already.

As per GALAXY QUEST, who thinks Alan Rickman rocks in this movie? It's strange. Alan Rickman's claim to fame is being these bad guys in Hollywood blockbusters, like DIE HARD, ROBIN HOOD: PRINCE OF THIEVES and the HARRY POTTER movies. But in my mind, I see him as Dr. Lazarus/Alexander Dane from GALAXY QUEST or The Metatron from DOGMA or Marvin the Paranoid Android off of HITCHIKER'S. I see him more as a comic relief in sci-fi/fantasy flicks than as a villain.

Does anyone else seem him as that as well?

Alan is a true actor's actor. Truly, Madly, Deeply (I think that's the title) was the thinking person's Ghost.
And his bad guy in Quigley Down Under made the movie!

But his role in Galaxy Quest is the one I bow to him for.

Alan Rickman rocks in pretty much anything he cares to appear in.

Good Obadiah Slope years ago. Anyone else as Snape would have have just been annoying.

And on a gratuitous Harry Potter digression, dredge the back of your video cupboards for Tutti Frutti. Robbie Coltrane and Emma Thompson fronting a legendary Glasgwegian rock band's comeback.

One of the best openings to a series ever. Burying Big Jazza McGlone, The Majestics do an acapella version of "Three Steps to Heaven." Had to wait for Mal to shoot Laurence to beat that as a statement of intent.

Kicking myself for not taping "Your Cheatin' Heart." Tilda Swinton is an absolutely unbelievably good singer.

Eddie Clockerty's PA was Katy Murphy (there is a whole generation of Scots who will fall about if you say "Miss Toner" to them in Victor Meldrew's voice) who appeared in the awesome "Taking Over The Asylum" with my first sighting of David Tennant who gets us almost, but not quite, on topic.
