Anybody else wondering why, in Firefly it took so long for anyone to bring up the possibility of River being a "reader", when it's laid out pretty plain to Simon while he's rescuing her in the BDM?

"Yep...That went well."

"Yeah, but psychic? That sounds like science fiction..." :)

I figure Simon may have known a bit more than he sometimes let on in the series, but most of the crew just figured her for bright, very intuitive, but mostly rather crazy. Sure, there were clues, but nothing so much at once that they don't really piece it together until 'Objects.' (Kaylee saw some of what River was capable of in 'War Stories' but obviously didn't bring that up until much later. And the scenario where she cuts Jayne... well, it's Jayne. Who hasn't wanted to fillet him on occasion? :) Plus, what with all the running from the Feds, getting shot at, and overall just trying to get by, it may have taken longer for everything to add up.

There are inconsistencies in the movie/TV show,so we'll just have to live with it. But my theroy is that Simon knew River was a reader, but was reluctant to tell anybody, 1st of all, being on the run from the alliance, telling anyone about her would be a huge risk, and 2nd No one really likes the fact that someone can be listining in on what their thinking (cleverly pointed out by jayne in OiS. So while Simon knew she was a reader, it didn't mean everyone else had to know. Secrets are very common in firefly, (eg, we still don't know Book's true ID) and their part of what makes it so interesting. Some secrets we'll never know for sure *sniffs*... Damn Fox!

Simon was always very quick to pooh-pooh any suggestion that River was psychic, but in "Trash" he accepts her perception of Jayne's betrayal handily. I figure he knew, but (probably rightfully) feared that sharing that knowledge would make the rest of the crew more fearful of River than they were already. No real contracdiction here.

In strictly TV-Land, Simon reacted to River's mind-reading in Safe like he was already aware of it but trying to keep it hidden, which is consistent with the movie story. The fact that nobody on the crew figured it out until OiS is a testament to how tightlipped he can be.

Something that has confused me is in The Message Jayne refers to River as a "mind reading genius". This is done in the presence of the entire crew and audible enough for them to hear it yet no one bats an eye. Yet in Objects In Space when Mal confronts Simon about her being a reader everyone gets agitated.

Yup, he definitely acted like he knew, and he never really denied it when Mal confronted him about it.

Might have been a mistake in the writing, The Message was the last episode filmed. Although Jayne might have just been joking around.

If I remember correctly (and not only has it been awhile but my brain a bit duller then it used to be) that had to do with TV editing. OiS made it on the small screen and was when the crew learned River was a reader. The Message would have aired at a later date.

Oh, that makes sense.
