I'm trying to put together a compilation of music that reminds me of Firefly, can anyone help?

I have 2 so far..

Eric Clapton - Can't find my way home
Brooks was Here - Thomas Newman (Shawshank redemption Soundtrack)

Added 22/03/06 14:41 UK time.

Since posting this thread I have sampled some of the artists and tracks listed.. Can I say thanks to everyone who has offered suggestions, some really wonderful stuff.

Anyway for your information I have put together my 1st CD of tracks that either relate to or remind me of the Firefly experience. The tracks are a bit on the soppy side so would suit the Ladies out there. the tracks are:

1. Can't find my way home - Eric Clapton (Alternate main theme)
2. 1000 Miles- Vanessa Carlton (Kaylees Theme)
3. White Oleander - Thomas Newman
4. The Day's Last Night - Seamus Egan(Life aboard the Firefly)
5. Pacific Street - HEM (kaylee & Simon's Theme)
6. Not going anywhere - Karen Ann (Rivers theme)
7. Willin - Little feat (Jayne's theme)
8. Beauty & The Mess - Nickel Creek (The sound of the Verse)
9. brooks was Here - Thomas Newman -Shawshank Redemption(Burial Theme)
10 - Smoothie Song - Nickel Creek - (music for makin crime)
11. All the pretty horses - Calexico - (Rivers lullaby)
12. Dune Messiah - Brian Tyler - Children of Dune - (Serenity)
13. Best I Ever Had - Sister Hazel - Ode to Firefly

I am still going through the thread and will be making more CD's. In the meantime enjoy.

Mal: Wheel never stops turning, Badger.

The Gattaca soundtrack - Michael Nyman. One of the best score's ever composed and apparently Joss played some of the tracks to Nathan to sum up his character.

Also a lot of stuff by Nickel Creek is very firefly.

I've collected a bunch from previous threads on similar topics, so this post is a copy and paste from a bunch of stuff and the results of me combing through my music collection...:

From me:
The songs (all available on iTunes, I checked):
"If everyone cared" on the new Nickleback CD--even mentions fireflys!
"Firefly" by Sister Hazel (my favorite band) on their CD "Lift"
"I hope you dance" by LeAnn Womack
"Ready for your love" by Chantal Kreviazuk--a Kaylee and Simon song, perhaps add Mrs. Reynolds for humor?

Lastly, "A clock Stopped". It's a lovely waltz piece, I think by KGB? I don't know if that's a real group, it's the info I have. The song is very much in the Firefly soundtrack line, reminds me of the end song in "the Message". I got the song from a friend, so I'm afraid I'm not sure where to tell you to get it. Ask if you're interested and we can work on finding it.

_____________
From Grayfury:
Greta Gaines has a killer song called Firefly
And the band Delerium has a song called Euphoria (Firefly) as well as one called Serenity

From Milford:
If you listen to the entire Joshua Tree album from U2, the whole thing reminds me of FF/S. Especially take note of Trip Through Your Wires (Mal and Inara), Running to Stand Still (Simon and River), Exit & I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For (Mal again, also Book), and In God's Country (which makes me thing about Serenity herself). Of course Where the Streets Have No Name could have been the theme song for the whole series.

I think it's Jerry Douglas's great Dobro playing that puts me in a FF state of mind.

From Doncoat:
As does the band she has produced betimes, Nickel Creek.

From PDCharles:
Kings of Leon - "Molly's chambers" (from VW commercial fame) - reminds me of Inara's shuttle

They have a song called "Dusty" that starts with a riff that always reminds me of the 'verse

From tealcandtrip:
Kelly Clarkson's "because of you" came on and all the sudden, all I could think of was Firefly.
I don't know why, but I think that would make a great humor vid. You know, Mal can't love Inara because he got burned by YoSafBrig and Nandi.
Seriously, every time I hear that song now, I laugh histerically cause Firefly's the only thing I can think of.
_____________
The song is called Always on Your Side. It is a great song and there are parts that are very Mal and Inara.
____________
From me again:
anything but ordinary by Avril Lavigne for River
3 doors down "life" for Mal
Make the sh*t happen-Mal or Jayne (I don't actually know the title to this song)
"Nice Work if you can get it" w/Fred Astaire whole group
"Hopeless" by Sister Hazel whole group
"What does a girl do?" By the Shirelles for ladies
"How does it feel?" Avril Lavigne for River
"Simple Joys of Maidenhood" with Julie Andrews for River/Inara
"Those seven deadly virtues" from Camelot--would be awesome for a vid if you Open with quote from operative!
"Crash & Burn" by savage garden

That should keep everyone busy for a while :) I really think a lot of them would make great vids. I hope somebody picks up on that... :)
Cheers, Amy

I highly recommend this one by our very own Cedric and Hawke: The Bedlam Bards : On The Drift. Music inspired by Firefly / Serenity.
LIsten to samples and order if you like here: http://cdbaby.com/cd/bedlambards

Also Marillion: Ocean Cloud from the album Marbles has a lot of Mal/Serenity in it. It's about a man and his boat. sample available here: http://www.marillion.com/listen/index.htm

Try John Mellencamp's : Large World Turning & Overture from his CD Mr. Happy Go Lucky.

There is actually quite a few on it that sound like they came right out of the show.

Try here for some samples: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000A0EMI6/sr=8-10/qid=1142879073/ref

River's theme song: Extraordinary Machine by Fiona Apple.

Or When You're Falling by Afro Celt Sound System.

Or Not Going Anywhere by Keren Ann. Ok, that's more of a stretch, but:

This is why I always wonder
I'm a pond full of regrets
I always try to not remember rather than forget...

This is why I always whisper
I'm a river with a spell
I like to hear but not to listen,
I like to say but not to tell

And it's pretty.

There's a song called The Ecstasy of Gold. I know it's from a movie soundtrack, so forgive me if someone else has already mentioned it, but when Metallica did their S&M CD, it was the first track.

"We may experience some slight turbulence, and then... explode."

If you have iTunes, I strongly suggest you check out a group called Nickel Creek. They are a very modern sounding folk/country/bluegrass fusion. Lot's of mandolin, violin, drum, and guitar with some modern rhythms underlying the tunes. In fact, I bought a few of their songs off of iTunes BECAUSE they sounded like they were an extension of the Firefly TV soundtrack.

Check out the following Nickel Creek tunes:

When in Rome (album "Why should the Fire Die?")
Green and Gray (album "This Side")
Smoothie Song (album "This Side")

Good luck!

If you're more into Irish/Celtic music, I suggest any album by Seamus Egan, and the first two albums by the band he plays with, Solas. (After that, their vocalist went solo, and their new singer, while competent, just doesn't have the flair or sound of their first singer, Karan Casey.)

MAL "You only gotta scare him."
JAYNE "Pain is scary..."

KWICKO

"We'll know our disinformation program is complete when everything the American public believes is false." -- William Casey, Reagan's presidential campaign manager & CIA Director (from first staff meeting in 1981)

I was culling through my own playlists, putting things together that had (to me, anyway) a Firefly-ish feel to them, either through their musicality, their general theme, or both. Here's some of my picks, from stuff I already had lying around my iTunes collection:

I'll Fly Away - Alison Krauss & Gillian Welch
Brothers In Arms - Dire Straits
(This one, to me, sums up so well the Battle Of Serenity
Valley. It's a funeral dirge, with an overwhelming feel for
the finality and futility of war.)

Orange Sky - Alexi Murdoch
Under The Milky Way - The Church
Big Sky Country - Chris Whitley
Windfall - Son Volt
All The Pretty Horses - Calexico
Heroes - David And David
[David (Baerwald) & David (Rickets) had a couple semi-hits
from their debut album, "Boomtown" (Boomtown and
Swallowed By The Cracks), but this song always stood out
for me.)

Desperado - The Eagles
Friend Of The Devil - Lyle Lovett
[It's a Grateful Dead cover, but I like it better than the original
probably for its more Western feel.]

Southbound Again - Dire Straits
Living With The Law - Chris Whitley
Million Miles From Home - Kezia Jones
Tear Stained Eye - Son Volt
Drive South - John Hiatt
Sleepwalk - Santo & Johnny
Into the Mystic - Van Morrison

Anyway, that's what's been on my playlist lately. Never fails to get me out into the black...

Also, there's lots of stuff from The Chieftains that sounds VERY Fireflyesque (think of River dancing with the Hill Folk), and I heard something the other day from the South Austin Jug Band that made me think immediately of our Big Damn Heroes, but I don't have any of that stuff on my hard drive. Yet. :)

To KWICKO

I have always had a passion for music same as scifi, but get little time to experiment or find new stuff.

A lot of the tracks on your list I haven't heard so I especially appreciate you sharing your selection with me.

I will enjoy going through the list.

Keep it shiney..(someone has to make a bumper sticker with that on!)

You might want to check out the "Browncoat Radio" playlist at http://www.misteruniverse.net/playlistA.html

I enjoy listening but you may not want to register with live 365 to get the "signal"...

"Building A Mystery" by Sarah McLachlan (the most perfect description for Mal I've ever heard)

Danfan, Nickel Creek is very similar to the John Mellencamp stuff. Thanks for pointing it out! I Like it!

Kwicko, those are some great suggestions. I have always thought that I'll Fly Away - Alison Krauss & Gillian Welch is a great song for Firefly.
Man of Constant Sorrow by Dan Tyminski is good too as is Down In The River To Pray - Alison Krauss (great Sheppard Book song).

Mindy Smith's Come To Jesus always reminds me of Firefly. To me, it's the song that accidentally got left off the soundtrack because Greg forgot he wrote it. Which he obviously didn't. Still.

How about the soundtrack for the HBO show Carnival?
I know it's what I listened to, for Fireflyish music, before the Firefly soundtrack came out.
