Was given the box set at the weekend and just finished the last episode.
What were the studio thinking when they cancelled this show?
We here in Ireland never got the opportunity to even SEE it, and I only got interested when I caught Joss Whedon on T4 after a SG1 episode.
All the gripe about it not being 'fast'enough, is exactly what makes it brilliant.
Why on earth don't the studios accept that we the viewers with more than one brain cell appreciate an intelligent concept and are willing to allow a story to unfold.
I am not just a little distressed but depressed too. My thanks and praise to all involved in it's creation.

Trust me, you are not alone. I live in the US and never even heard of it viewing here. Fox's lame attempt to market I suppose. As for reasons for canceling, my theory is to make way for reality tv. It's cheap and they don't have to pay the actors. Firefly's budget was pretty high because of the special effects needed and nine character cast.

However, just because it was cancelled doesn't mean we won't get more. Spread the word as much as you can and maybe we'll get another movie or maybe even another season. Joss isn't done telling his story, and we are trying to give him the opportunity to tell it.

Huzzah! Welcome to our club, the Merry Band of Braincells, aka the Browncoats.
Yours is a shared experience, Tricia, we share your pain and stick the finger (inserting finger,,,,) to the networks that look down their noses at their own viewers.
I'd praise some more, but college is getting in the way of my cyber and social life. For now, let's assume you're Irish.

No, I am not insane, I am crazy. Thank you for asking.

*waves hello to a fellow Irish browncoat*

Hey! Welcome to the board. I'm Linda, from Dublin.

Yes, I feel your pain and your sorrow. I found out that Firefly had been cancelled after watching two episodes on tape (that a friendly person had sent me from the US - in a format I could actually play!) Since the episodes in question were Ariel and War Stories, I just had to see the rest. I remember feeling incredibly frustrated after watching Objects in Space. I just couldn't accept that episode as the end of the story. I had to see more!

It disgusts me that shows like Firefly get cancelled while rubbish like Fear Factor gets season after season. If it weren't for Lost and Battlestar Galactica I would have written American television off completely. I know that there are other good dramas out there, but I'm fed up of cop shows and medical dramas being the only half decent programs available.

Not that Ireland is exactly a font of creativity. Seen Celebrity Jigs and Reels yet?

You see, here in America we have a long-standing tradition of taking great shows and totally destroying them. We then leave crap on TV like The OC and export it to the rest of the world in an effort to cement our position and reinforce the international notion that we are the biggest bunch of dumbasses around. We then import clever shows from other countries and pretend that we made them up.

Occasionally we get it right, see Lost for example, but usually any show with some weight to it it's cancelled.

For the record, welcome to the community. If you see FollowMal around, just let her know you're new and she'll be happy to hand over your browncoat.

Welcome, secrettricia!
I'm on strawberry duty -- fresh fruit has just been delivered to the galley, so wander on down and tuck in. FollowMal or Kaele usually find the new members and issue coats. They have the keys.
(I have the lock-picks but so far that's a secret. We'll save that for a real emergency.)

SINGATE

I showed the DVDs to my sister and her boyfriend this past weekend. This was her reaction after seeing the last episode: "What the fuck? How the hell do you end a show like that? Why did they cancel this? Does the movie at least have a real ending?"

I told her the details of how Fox screwed things up but refused to tell her about the movie.

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Welcome to the site & the fandom Secrettricia. Glad to have you here w/ us.

You are asking the same question that all of us here have asked ourselves for years. Unfortunately the only answer is that Fox executives are not burdened with an overabundance of schooling, that & they wouldn't know a good show if it bit them on the @$$.

Great to see our little show has hit Ireland. Be sure to share it w/ friends so they can enjoy it too.

Wash and Book died?
Good grief! I am in shock.
Just got the movie in the post today and have had to watch it twice....in the hope that the ending might have changed.
Oh dear.
Tricia

Hello Tricia,

There is debate over those very questions. See this link

You may want to pull up a chair.
