Ok Browncoats,

Aliens,Star Wars,Starship Troopers,Invaders from Mars,Independence Day.

These are all futurisic si/fi films that have come out in the not to distant past.

THEY, are connected in a way that Firefly/Serenity, even though a si/fi space endeavor,is not a brother.

The location of the break? the alien factor. All the others have creatures from other worlds.Yet Joss has gone with the si/fi western. Remember these folk have traveld millions of miles, and not an alien in sight.

There was something in a carnival side show( in War Stories) but to me it came across as a con job.

Question: Is Joss's verse better because of it or do you think a slimmy creature with double sets of teeth needs to be introduced into the mix?

My personal opinion.Stick to the western. At this point it would seem a bit cheesy to bring ET in.

second question: If aliens were introduced into the J/verse, what would be a good way? I think the Blue Hand angle has an opening. How would you bring in the "Greys"?

Ahh, yes, the alien factor :)

I've actually run into a couple of stubborn non-believers who couldn't get into the show 'cause I said there weren't any aliens. (In hindsight I should have just said there were and let them find out for themselves :)

Yeah, I don't see Firefly working as well with aliens in the mix. Think I've run across Joss commenting on this, too... maybe in the audio commentaries for the series? Seeing as the crux of the show is making it science fiction but also believable and "real," he's sort of walking a fine line as is. Aliens might just send it over the balance.

But if there were aliens? Hmm... well, we're dealing with a sci-fi/western sort of dealy here. There really aren't any "indians" in there, though. So maybe while trying to settle one of the outlying planets/moons, we run into an alien race that has already colonized it? Obviously, not likely to happen ;p but could be some parallels there for the Great Push Westward, Manifest Destiny, etc...

Rather than introducing aliens, maybe there could be more done with the Reavers. It would still keep in line with Joss's "no alien" viewpoint.

I always thought it would be cool if the Reavers were being used as weapons. Maybe the Alliance has some limited form of control over them, and has been using them to take out certain adversaries. Or perhaps they were an earlier version of the psychics being trained at the Academy.

I think a lot more could be done with the Reavers before we jump to the alien idea.

At last.

SPOILERS FROM SERENITY

Well, if you remember, the Alliance is responsible for the Reavers. What if they KNEW the Pax would produce such results in .1% of the population. Maybe this is the Alliances way of reminding the outlying territories that they NEED the Alliance to survive.

I agree that there couldn't really be aliens, at least not aliens of the "green and gilled" variety. They'd have to use the old Star Trek trick of being exactly like humans, only using the "look, their ears a different, they must be aliens" mentality. I still don't think that they'd add anything more to a storyline that Joss couldn't do with human characters...or cows.

Yep Vampires and demons are just fine for Joss but beings from another planet that's where the line must be drawn.

An I carried such a torch

I see what you guys are saying,

introduce aliens that look like us,talk like us, befriend us, say good things and are all around good folk, on the outside. But beneath the cover they want to connive and control and use us to do their bidding

wait!! I think I've just described the Alliance
or might I add Mrs.Reynolds

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Personally I believe the 'verse Joss created is better for not having aliens. As he said himself he wanted to focus on humans and their adventures and misadventures out there in the black. Muddying up the waters w/ aliens would just distract from what we were meant to experience.

If I want aliens I will watch Star Trek, but to focus on humans I will take Firefly any day.
