Thank you all very much for ya'lls input on River
versus Buffy. You all had very good points. Now I
am asking ya'll to decide whether Mal or Han is
the better captain. Let the games begin.

Mal, and not just speaking as a Browncoat.

In the movies, Han's only real crew was Chewie. At various points in the novels, we get additions to this (Bollux & Blue Max, Badure & Hasti, Leia, Threepio, the kids, Kakhmaim & Mobvekhar, etc), but it's still primarily Han & one copilot/partner.

Mal rides herd on a consistently larger crew, and (unlike Han) has particular tasks for each of them. On the Falcon, everyone's pretty much expected to be a jack of all trades (with Han doing most of the work himself). The only really job-specific crew are the Noghri gunners (and even then, they're only aboard as Leia's bodyguards).

Also, Mal has a harder job; the GFFA has a larger and wider infrastructure for smugglers. Even the middlemen's rates are lower (thanks to folks like Karl Ancher, Talon Karrde, and the Smugglers' Alliance, GFFA crime lords can't get away with charging 40% --too much competition).

This all said, Han is almost certainly the better pilot (as good as Wash, possibly better).
