I can't seem to find the "Is Joss Whedon a one trick pony" thread, which sucks because the thread deals with auteurism and authorship, which appeals to me both as a film student and hopeful one day filmmaker.

To answer the main question posted, I wouldn't call him a "one trick pony". That implies that he relies too heavily on a gimmick that in the end betrays him (see M. Night Shymalan and his overreliance on the "plot twist" at the end of his movies.)

I'd say that his fascination with strong female protagonists is just part of his ouver (sp?) along with a lot of other themes as well. This doesn't necessarily mean that he can't and won't do male protagonists (FIREFLY has five examples of the male psyche to play with). He just sees more potential in female protagonists.

It's his thing and he doesn't want to mess with it. It would be out of character for him to make DOGMA, just as much it would be out of character for Kevin Smith to make BUFFY.

And I loved the comment on how Joss should have been born a lesbian. It reminds me of that scene in MONTY PYTHON'S LIFE OF BRIAN, where the People's Front of Judea are at the matinee of the Roman coliseum debating politics and Stan (Eric Idle) keep adding female vernacular to their causes. And then this exchange takes place.

Reg: Why you always on about women, Stan.
Stan: I want to be one.
(stunned silence)
Reg: What?
Stan: I want to be a woman. From now on, you must all call me Loretta.
Judith: Well why do you want to be called Loretta, Stan?
Stan: I want to have babies.
Reg: YOU WANT TO HAVE BABIES?
Stan: It's every man's right if he want to.
Reg: But..but you can't have them
Stan: Don't you be oppressing me.
Reg: I'm not oppressing you, Stan. You havn't got a womb. Where's the fetus going to gestate, you gonna keep it in a box?

For some reason, I can imagine Joss having this exact conversation with David Greenwalt, Tim Minear and either Marti Noxon or Jane Espenson in some restaurant in L.A.

"There's only one "Return" ok, and it ain't "of the King", it's "of the Jedi."

"Maybe we should start calling your friend 'Padme' because he loves 'Mannequin Skywalker' so much, Right? (imitating robot) Danger...danger...my name is Anakin...my shitty acting is ruining saga."

Excerpt of internet teaser for CLERKS 2.
