Kate Beckinsale has reportedly joined the race to play Wonder Woman in Buffy the Vampire Slayer creator Joss Whedon's upcoming comic book movie. The British actress is in negotiations with Whedon, according to movie gossip website joblo.com. Insiders claim Whedon is "very happy" with Beckinsale and confirmed last week that production on his highly anticipated movie adaptation of the popular comic book series will begin filming in early September. Buffy stars Sarah Michelle Gellar and Charisma Carpenter, and teen queen Lindsay Lohan have been linked to the coveted role - which was played on TV by Lynda Carter. Former hot favorite Carpenter even remarked she was putting off having a second baby in the hope of landing the dream role. She recently told a reporter, "I'd like to (have another baby) eventually, but I want Wonder Woman right now. I'm not holding my breath, but I'm crossing my fingers and toes and praying."

I do love Kate Beckinsale a lot... she's proved that she can do action flicks in the Underworld movies. But I was still hoping for a relatively unknown actress.

I'm not a big Kate Beckinsale fan, but she's not a bad choice. Better than Lindsay Lohan.

But I would take IMBD news with a grain of salt. They take submissions from anyone. A while back, they announced that the new Highlander movie was going to be directed by John Woo, and star Hulk Hogan.

Not to say this is bogus, but I'll believe it when it comes from Joss, or hits the trades.

They all just picked the story up from one another, and didn't do their research as thoroughly as warranted.

From Joblo.com:
Quote:

Finally, Whedon admitted that Beckinsale's biggest champion had been an Internet webmaster that he had met at an underground L.A. party a few weeks back, JoBlo from JoBlo.com, who he says kept emailing him to choose the starlet: "This guy would not let up...he kept emailing me half-naked pictures of Kate, swearing that she would be awesome as Wonder Woman." Whedon, who was so impressed with JoBlo, said that he would even take part in the site's annual April Fool's Day gag this year, which was a nice thing of him to do, especially since that's what you've been reading this entire article. That's right, every word is untrue, folks...gotta love the Internet!

My, won't their faces be red. (Except that they'll just steam on past, probably won't bother with any retractions, and count on people to forget it all.)

May have been the losing side. Still not convinced it was the wrong one.

Ok, good joke.

Honestly though, Kate Beckinsale might make a pretty good Wonder Woman. She certainly is not hard on the eyes.

Nah. Trust Joss to cast an unknown & I am sure it will be great.

Just give the role of Wonder Woman to Morena Baccarin for god's sake!!! Better actress than most, and far better looking than the vast majority to boot.

Total agreement on Morena. Who else could play this role? Seriously. No one else is going to look good wearing a golden, metallic headband - if that is in fact the direction Joss is going. I vote for Morena all the way. Okay, maybe Allyson Hannigan. But Morena, seriously...Morena.

I think Kate is a hell of alot better choice then teh rest of them. Lohan is just a joke, theres no way anyone should take here seriously. Gellar doesn't strike me as Wonder Woman. and Carpenter doesn't go well with the younger Wonder Woman role that we've been hearing about. Kate seems like the most logical choice, unless they found a lesser known actress and just havn't been publically talking about it.

I would love to see Morena or Gina in the role, but would equally enjoy seeing Kate Beckinsale.

She has the look and the body, is a pretty good actress, and proved in the two UNDERWORLD films that she is probably one of the best action girls in films.

I totally agree with you, I think shes perfect in the role

If you listen to the commentary on the Serenity DVD you hear, him laughing about them having to change the Bow and arrow she was using in to a blaster and people thought in looked too "Wonder Woman-ish!!" he then giggles and says something like "which is strange!"

I wonder if he gave something away with that.

The only worry to me is that Wonder Woman is a Statuesque Amazon, supposedly around 6ft tall.

Morena isnt that tall, however seeing that they hired 6'2" Hugh Jackman to play the 5'6" Wolverine I dont think Hollywood would mind too much.

Joss isnt the type of person to "bow" to the studio execs, he'll pick the person he thinks is right for the part, Kate, Lindsey and Christina might have more "CLOUT" than Morena, shes MUCH more beautiful than the other 3 in my humble opinion.

Whoever he picks I'm confinent he will chose the right person and bring another great comic character to the silver screen.

Joss may not be the type to 'bow' to studio executives, but with the ammount of money riding on a film like Wonder Woman, I really doubt that he could get away with doing something the studio or producer disagreed with.

And I honestly don't think Charisma would have any box office clout whatsoever.

Pretty much every successfull film adaptation of a comic book hero has had a virtual unknown in the role. Every time they cast a big name, it bombs. Usually they get an experience and respected, but pretty unknown actor for the lead, and a big heavy weight star for the villian or love interest. Just look at any SUPERMAN film, from Christopher Reeve to Brandon (who?) Routh.

Morena has the beauty, poise and aristocratic air to her. And she looks very European.

And I'm not saying this because I'm a huge FIREFLY fan, I'm being objective. I've thought of every possible actress, and the only two I think are better choices are Kate Beckinsale and another FIREFLY actress Gina Torres.

OK, she's black. But I'd rather have a black actress in the role than somebody very LA looking like Charisma Carpenter. She's the right height, has lips like a Greek Goddess, and looks formidable in a fight. She's my number one choice for the role.

Totally agree with both points there.

There I'd have to disagree. While they may not have been ultra-mega-stars, I don't think you can call Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, Tobey McGuire, Ben Affleck, or Patrick Stewart "unknowns". Aside from Reeves' Superman, those guys have been the leads of the most successfull superhero films to date (Daredevil may not be well-liked, but it was financially successfull). Though Jackman was an unknown when he landed Wolverine, he had several known-quanitity actors surrounding him. The last big Superhero film to star a relative unknown (at the time) was Eric Bana in Hulk, which is also considered one of the biggest flops of the recent superhero trend. Fantasitic Four was a bit split, 2 little-known actors (Ian Gufford and... uh.. the dude that played the torch), 2 fairly well-know TV actors (Chicklis and McMahon), and one fairly very-known piece of eye candy (Alba).

Tobey McGuire and Christian Bale were in no way names when cast cast SPIDERMAN and BATMAN. They were respected actors, with a good number of credits, but pretty unknown to the general public.

Like DAREDEVIL, HULK may be been a critical disaster, but notched in over $200 million in the US, and made a very healthy profit from its cinema release alone. Add in DVD sales and the toy line, and guess what, HULK 2 is already in pre-production.

As for Jackman, that confirms what I've said, get a relative unknown, and then get heavyweights in the supporting roles.

I still have to disagree there. McGuire and Bale were much, much more well when they were cast than Morena is at this point. McGuire had a number of fairly well-seen films, probably the biggest of which was Pleasentville, before getting Spidey. Bale, aside from having starred in a Spielberg movie at 12, had a number of well-know movies like American Psycho (which got A LOT of press) and Reign of Fire, a mbig summer release from just a couple years prior.

Bale was also the leading choice for Batman on many fan-sites (which makes him very-much not unknown), a fact the studio has acknowleged effected casting. Either way, though neither was a big star, they were actors that people recognized, and were familliar with. No-one outside of us browncoats really has any idea who Morena is.

As for Jackman and X-Men, it was a somwhat different situation, in that it was an ensemble. Though Wolvie was central to the plot, he didn't carry the movie on his own, as Wonder Woman will have to.

The case of casting Routh for Superman is unique, and not really comperable to any other movie. For one, it's directed by a guy who's got a proven, and highley-successfull track record in the superhero genre. Second, it's Superman, arguably the world's most iconic fictional character of the last century. People will see that movie for the character, regardless of the actor. Wonder Woman, for better or worse, does not have nearly the following as Supes.

I'm not saying an unknown won't work. I'd prefer they go that way, actually (though I don't think I'd go with Morena). I'm just saying, given the track records of previos super-hero films, and female-led action movies in general, the Studio is going to want to put someone in the role who will help ensure the biggest retrun possible. And as someone said before, Universal is likely a bit weary about putting out another big-budget Joss movie with no starts in it.

Okay I'll take a bite at this. I'm shocked at how many discerning browncoats are on the kate kick. for our joss who is boss with the yak-yak?! has she had more than 10 minutes of dialogue in her last 3 films combined, especially any that wasn't just quips? Her ability to look hot and steely while cocking a gun isn't in question, but i'm expecting way more from wonder woman. did you see how awful she was in that movie with hugh jackman? the audience i was with was laughing out loud, and not in a nice way.

morena- i love her. she's tiny and delicate. wonder woman is an AMAZON. She's bigboned and proud of it. i'm not sure i can envision her physically in the role.

who's that alias girl. jen gardner? maybe she could do it. how about hilary swank? both are statuesque, good actresses, and proven physically capable.

i *think* charisma could do it but i have a hard time imagining it- i see shallow and snarky from all her years on buffy. as for sarah michelle, if they make wonder woman blond i'll barf. it would be like making the hulk red. also- too tiny. but i'd love to see her in the role. maybe a wig. i know she's naturally a brunette, so maybe it'd stop looking wrong to me after a few minutes. :) but i don't see the studios letting joss use his pet actresses in the role.

i like what someone else said about using an unknown. someone said it wouldn't be allowed - but i think it's possible. joss is known for "discovering" female leads, and the name recognition of the movie will carry itself.

What kind of world do we live in where the idea of Kate Beckinsale is an April Fool and Lindsay Lohan is a serious contender?

I have this tingling feeling that unless there's a candidate both Joss and the studio agree upon, the movie just won't get made.
