So, I'm making an egg sandwich for breakfast, when it suddenly occurs to me that I've heard Book's line to Mal before. When it becomes obvious that Mal and Saffron ("Our Mrs. Reynolds") have 'engaged in intimate contact', Book reprises his earlier warning against such an eventuality, by remarking to Mal, "Well, isn't that special...?"

Suddenly, as I'm turning my egg, it hits me like a bolt from the blue that this is the exact wording used as a tagline by Dana Carvey's "Church Lady" (NBC's Saturday Night Live, circa 1986-1993).

Every time Church Lady interviewed a 'sinner' -- for example, Madonna -- she would say, 'So you're getting naked for a new photography book, hmmm? "Well, isn't that special?"

Any chance Book's use of the exact same phrasing was anything other than serendipitous?

'Tard-ily,

zoid

P.S.
How sad is it, that it took 3+ years for me to recognize this correlation?

Wow, never thought of that connection. You might be on to something....

More apropos, you should have said:
"...You might be on something."

Having said that, I believe Book lopsidedly purses his mouth in the exact same fashion that Carvey's 'Church Lady' did whenever she delivered that line...

ETA: Stuck in the DVD and reviwed the scene (OMR, Ch. 9). Ron Glass renders a skeptical look with downturned corners of mouth and a chin dip. It might have gone full-bore Church Lady, but there's a jump-cut away from his facial expression before it fully develops. But, it's implied, yes? No? Yeah, I was pretty sure I was crazy on this one, too...

Anyway. Y'all rewatch "Our Mrs. Reynolds" and see what you think. And for those who don't already own their own copy of the series and movie DVDs, run right out and buy them, this very minute.
(NB: Told you I was an evil genius. Use of actual term 'genius' optional.)

Well, it's not out of the realm of possibility that Joss and/or Ron are SNL viewers. . .

MISSTRESSAHARA

For me I didn't get the connection of Book reprising that line and the original line of "The special hell." It was only after reading another thread a week back (can't remember which) that I finally got it. It was an inside joke between Book and Mal. "Well isn't that... special." Looking straight into Mals eyes with that knowing "I warned you," stare. How stupid was I not to have seen it? I mean it is one of my favorite episodes and it never occured to me. I can be so dense at times....

Zoid... hmmmmm give me an excuse to pop it in and see. And the Church lady does as well bring up the Big Bad Guy, while Book brings up his neighborhood.... Maybe maybe....

If I'm a bitch, then life just got interesting
