So, why was Jayne's Kaylee crush apparently dropped?

Has Joss ever said? He mentioned it in the commentary for the pilot, so I know I wasn't imagining it. Hell, at the time, it was the one thing that humanized Jayne at all. I'm not trying to sound all 'shipper here or anything, I just think it's odd that it wasn't even hinted at in later eps or the movie. Did Joss intend to build it up slowly (as in a romantic triangle), then just gave up altogether when the series ended?

I think it probably had something to do with Jayne's first love: money.

They was supposed to have a cute scene with Jayne's fuzzy turtle in Dead or Alive so I think it would have built slowly, if it ever got past the hinting stage.

Honestly, it seemed to me that Jayne had a crush on anything with two X chromosomes. I mean, it was kind of cute that he seemed to care about Kaylee in a sense; but he also lusted after Zoe and got all hot and bothered over Inara and the Counselor and grew attached to the blonde at Heart of Gold rather quickly... So really I think he just doesn't have a lot of loyalty or staying power when it comes to infatuation. And come on, he had a really insensitve way of showing his interest at times, and it really put Kaylee out. So I don't think it ever could have gone anywhere unless it was some tragic thing where he would shoot Simon out of jealousy and Kaylee would hate him forever or something. The character of Jayne does not really lend itself to "romantic" relationships, you know? I love Jayne and all, but I think Simon is a much better fit for Kaylee.

Such dark views of Jayne! I always figgered it was just a case of Jayne being stuck in his young teenage years romantically speaking. He may have a teasin’ kind of liking for Kaylee but nothing where he’d be mooning over her all the time. Sort of like the girl next door from all the old movies - but he’s stuck at the part where he doesn’t know how much he really likes her. And all his teasing is sex-related cuz he’s Jayne and 13 years old at heart and mind.

I’m sure Kaylee didn’t mind it so much before she fell for Simon, bein’ so free and easy herself. Altho I doubt she ever had any interest in Jayne for sex. Silly girl!

Well, yeah, that's kind of what I meant by no loyalty or staying power. Sorry if it sounded like I had a dark view on Jayne! He's just... a very simple guy with possibly arrested sexual developement. Or something.

To deviate to the orignal question. Yeah, they mention it...though I think from a story standpoint they didn't play it up for a reason. I perfer the explanation that it's not so much that Jayne had a little crush on Kaylee, but that she was the only one (at the time) on Serenity that he actually trusted.

Someone that was and would never betray him and someone he would never betray. Since Kaylee is essentially the undying faith of the crew, he considered her a true friend. Even if he didn't know how to express it in a civilized manner.

Though, you can tell that he doesn't necessarily like Simon hanging around River (and he really doesn't like him anyways) but he generally gets defensive of her around him.

I don't think it ever "went away" as such. I think Kaylee's obvious interest in Simon made Jayne back off a little and was also one of his motivators for the Ariel betrayal.

You often see this in Joss's ensemble shows, threads involving some characters go on a low heat while other stuff with other characters get played out. Had we had a full season who knows what might have happened.

As for things being backed of in the movie, well this was really a Mal/River story with the rest just along for the ride. A lot of the others show minimal character development in the 8 months 'Verse time that has passed since we last saw them. I mean, if instead of the Battery and Nethers comment Kaylee had hinted at a brief fling with Jayne you would have heard the screams of the shippers in the audience. They got together and we missed it....
