You think you know--what's to come, what you are. You haven't even begun.

OK, I don't know how many of you have noticed the slight name discrepancies on two of our BDHs, but it's really been bugging me and I want the take of my fellow browncoats. Hope this isn't too silly.
First: Zoe. In some of the behind the scene extras when Gina is talking, it says she plays "Zoe Warren" BUT in the deleted scene from the movie the Operative is told her name is "Zoe Washburne" and was formerly "Zoe Allayne". So she has three different last names given throughout the timeline. I think that the scene from the movie, though it was ultimately not included, must be giving us her real name. But the behind the scenes extras were filmed first. Were they just not sure what name to give her then since it had never been mentioned on the show? I don't know. I like the last name "Allayne" personally. She should have kept it. Bad-ass chick like that doesn't need to change her name for a man, no matter how much she might love him. Anyway... thoughts?
Second: Book. He has two, similar, first names. On his gravestone in the movie it looks like "Derria" but, again, the extras don't tally. He comes up as playing "Shepard Meria Book" and honestly neither name makes any sense to me. Thoughts?

I'm assuming whoever did the captions for the extra features just looked on IMDB for the character names, as they were originally listed (wrongly) there.

Oh! I never thought to check IMDB. You'd think they'd put more effort into their work, maybe ask someone who actually worked on the show. Though, as evidenced by the close caption glitches, some people just don't care enough.

I'm pretty sure that they had problems naming Wash. It seems for a while he was Wash Warren, but by the time the pilot of Firefly aired, he was Hoban Washburn. However, since some early promos listed him as Wash Warren it was assumed Zoe was Zoe Warren... it lead to a mess of confusion. This isn't all too uncommon in TV shows. They aren't perfect.

Zoe's maiden name was Allayne. I don't see what's wrong with her taking a married name. Zoe is capable of great devotion to her husband. She gives it freely, which is a different between he and Mal, who couldn't move past the war and fights against loving. I doubt Wash ever asked Zoe to change her name. She probably wanted to.

As for Book... I think the same thing as with Wash happened. Joss couldn't chose a name. It went through many changed, but by Serenity the movie, it was Derrial Book.

"Objects in Space"
River: It's just an object. It doesn't mean what you think...

Hmm..
Bit of a different tac on the topic here;
When I saw the title, I immediately though of
The phonetic similarity between "River" and
"Reaver". That silly Joss.
Other (perhaps) meaningful similies:
"Zoë" means "the One" or "the Only" (Scandinavian
I think). In light of Serenity it carries some
meaning I feel.
Book.... (hello? Bible, anyone?)
Jayne... Another phonetic -Jane's Defense Weekly?
(a publication all about military and aerospace
hardware -which he kind of is)
Mal... Yes. He is "bad" and not just in the Latin ;]
Badger... is a bit of a badger in't he?

That is very, very cool. I wonder how much of that was deliberate. Joss does seem to be a very well-read man, so I bet all of it is. Now I have to go off and do research to see what else I can dig up! Shiny!
Hey, how do you get the dots over the "e" for Zoe? I've been trying to figure it out so I could spell it properly. Always drove me crazy in the close captioning that it didn't always have that.

I assumed the name of Jayne came from Johnny Cash's 'A Boy Named Sue' about a boy who grows up tough because of his girl's name.

Hey, that's exactly what Jayne's name makes me think of! Although I have to say (as a compliment to Mr Baldwin's acting and... masculinity, we shall say, rather than my dimwittedness) that it wasn't until River pointed it out that I went: "hey, that usually is a girl's name!"

I was surprised that they all call each other by the first names. It took me several episodes to realize that Jayne was not a last name!

Assuming you're using Windows(tm), you should have
a little program called "charmap.exe". The last
Windows I used was 98, so it may not be in the new
version (I use linux but was too lazy to change my
keyboard map -i copy/pasted from wikipedia ;)

BTW:
Serenity is an operating system
